The best 3 every time- NAS, Sincs & Wilks. They can see angles others can’t and then execute.

The other part of this story is to have a team of players that are ready to play a sacrificial role and clear space and channel the ball through our best players. And when they’re off resting or being impeded are good enough to fill the role.

It’s where Zak Jones has rejuvenated himself IMO. He’s playing a hard working sacrificial role and doing it well. And when the game flow needs him to step up he’s also getting it done.

He’s something like 45 games in.
He’s going to be a very good forward for us if they actually let him settle there.
This goes to the heart of what posters like gringo and others warn about thinking a great draft haul will automatically make us a better midfield next year.
It can take seasons for a player to develop. Harley Reid's are the exception to the rule and even he is dropping off at seasons end.
For us look at our first year players. All got a seniors gig but only Wilson has kept theirs and he has been good but not exceptional.
Pou, less than 40 games, had to go back to the 2's before he bossed Sydney, Owens, looked great last year, has only come back to form recently. NWM has just started to really stamp himself this year as a devestating playmaker.
The list goes on. Apart from Pou, 2022 draftees are unsighted.
It's a warning to not write off any young player under 50'ish senior games.

We've currently got eight players who've played between 35 and 60 games. Over the next season or two they could all make significant progress. How much progress probably determines how quickly we go up the ladder.

For those playing at home, that list is Byrnes, Nas, Henry, Windy, Owens, Sharman, Phillipou and Caminiti.

100%. The secret to making a surge is getting a whole lot shifting up a level. If you have 2 or 3 step up next year all of a sudden you have the potential to win significantly more games. Even if Owens, Sharman and Caminiti could make that level they just played at a regular standard we all of a sudden look a 4 or 5 goal better side. If King can start regularly kicking 3 goals every week the same.

Phillipou has set a standard now that we hope he meets consistently and Henry, Nas, Wilson all have the potential to move up.

Correct. And every one of those players has shown they can perform at the top level. If they can produce it consistently it can only help.
Although I'm not sure what will happen if NAS goes to another level. He's already A grade in my book.

Sheedy (before he got on the sauce) always used to say never judge a player until he has played 50 games

100% this and thats for mids which will be quicker to develop than KPP

And Byrnes, who may not have quite the class of some of the others is improving steadily every year and not out of place in our best 22 right now. Happy for him.

Nothing to do with this game, but interesting that Ben King's goal kicking appears to have dropped away drastically.
One goal from the last 12 attempts, after being a Colman medal contender for quite a while.
In sympathy with his non-playing twin maybe? ;)

Nas is already A grade for sure. Probably our third best player after Sinclair and Marshall. Just above or around the level of Wilkie IMO. If he goes up a level he's elite IMO. Could easily be our best player this time next year. He's the best talent we've taken in the National draft since probably the early 2000s.

Some come on quick like Serong or Gulden but plenty take 3 or 4 years to start to take control of the midfield. It's usually only the absolute stars that jump up early.

Yeah, that used to be when they said a player started to feel at home and settled. They usually start to rise between 50 and 100 and by 100 games should be starting to find proper consistency and high output.

Belief has more value then a few spots on a draft board. Belief can take you to the mountain. I hope we win and compete our asses off in the next 4 weeks. If we finish 10th, still going to get a quality player. It's the club they walk into and what that club stands for. Our 2 best players in the last month were players that went 10 and 11. And in a redraft Nas would go top 5 and Pou if his last 2 games are the norm would go top 5.

So i hope we finish as high as possible on the ladder and build on the second half of this year. We're playing better now then at any stage of the last 4 years.

Hard to unpack this puzzle: I can’t workout whether King doesn’t lead so our mids kick it up in the air or Our mids see King and just decide to put it on his head. I’m a huge fan of king and I still believe he’ll be a super player but we genuinely have looked better going forward without him.
Bit like how Collingwood discovered they were just as good (if not better) using Cameron instead of Grundy.

I wonder if Cal Twomey still reckons his beloved Bombers won the last trade period? 🤣

Mackay, Gresham and Duursma are all very vanilla and will take them nowhere. They are hardly an improvement on anything they already had. Paid massive overs salary wise for Mackay IMO.

Duursma lost a marking contest to Dan Butler. Read that again.

Just watched that goal again from NAS - jeez we have really got a player- elite - & starting to put on a bit of muscle - still more upside to come!

Go to training occasionally and they play a competitive small sided (14 v 14?) game on a soccer field - emphasis on ball movement & finding targets in congestion. The best 3 every time- NAS, Sincs & Wilks. They can see angles others can’t and then execute.

Don’t tell Narkles this, apparently we don’t train skills under high pressure anywho, I’m pretty sure he went on vacation from BF after the Sydney game, either that or he’s still trying to find his helmet after 33% inside 50 against the Suns.

Coops highlights v Injectors (look away now Cairnsman ;) )
