Toast Jack Lonie the resurrection

A few ex players have complained that the club was poor at communicating during this period. They are probably waiting to see what other options eventuate but not telling Lonie what's happening. We will probably sniff around potential trades then offer him a humble contract last minute.
Probably whats happening. But Lethlean has been very public saying that some players will have to wait for a contract so we shouldn't be shocked.

he's making a lot of noise about what we are going to do for someone who's removed from it though. I want positive changes like getting guns but getting nothing is better than making moves to look busy. I think we will improve with natural momentum and the most important thing to do is lock away the good players and try to get high end players in. The top 5 of the draft is where the elite talent usually come from so we should lock that pick in and not touch it.

Being irresponsible makes for a bit of a show for the fans but long term improvement comes from doing the methodical sensible moves.

I don't remember anyone whinging too much except when we do dumb things or have a shit season.

If you can get Shiel, Gaff etc you get it done otherwise be responsible, no GOPs for the sake of it or old drug hack ex champions.
Being in the market & shaking trees is exactly what he is doing so far no harm has come, realistically Shiel and Gaff won't come to us getting Hanners & maybe a Menzel might just be enough to get us into the 8 next year then you can move onto the next lot of gunns as you put it & have a realistic chance of landing them for season 2020.

Dumb things Hawthorn recruited Vickery,O'Rourke so they also make mistakes it's part of the landscape.

Lonie contract is probably being held up until Menzel makes a decision either way if he comes to the saints Lonies out if not he'll get a contract that's the reality of AFL there is only so many list spaces available & Lonie might get us an early 3rd rounder.

I'd rather Lonie then. At least he stops the ball going straight out. Menzel is a very high risk injury wise and should be a year to year proposition not a future plan.

Or Menzel and Hanners won't make any difference, we are bottom 4, trade out of the first 5 picks, lose Acres and Lonie and look even worse. We might as well use our time down the bottom to get elite kids in and play them, it's like we want instant gratification and are actually going backwards and can't see where we are going wrong.

Hawks have got nearly everything they have done trade wise right, picking two bad ones and holding that up against our record is really not comparing apples with apples.

spot on. also if we are into say Hill, would we have room for him?

The fact is the club has stunted his development as a small forward in the AFL. There's something going terribly wrong at our football club in terms of talent development.
AuntieBarrels…..you mean to say that we actually have talent development at the club?

That would surprise many on this board.

And agree....something somewhere has gone terribly wrong.

Either we have a very poor system at the club....or we have been spectacular in getting so many draft picks wrong.

It's one of the above or as I suspect,a combo of the two.

How do we equate the inconsistent form of a player, who when sent back to Sandy clocked up good numbers, then when called up has translated that form at senior level... To poor development?

I would be bitterly disappointed to see Lonie go..it would just prove beyond all doubt to me, that Richo's reputation on coming to our club as a developer of players is a load of dog s*it
Where's all this doom coming from?

IMO.....the reality is he had a heap of chances early this year and most of last.

He failed to fire consistently IMO.

He's really got his act together now...….last Sat night was a bit of an eye popper for me......so pleased for him.

My sniff test says there's a little contract securing by media going on.

Gringo....Simon L has been at the club for nearly 1 year...…..he'd absolutely have an acute idea of the inner workings of the club by now.

The several times I've been at the club this year watching training....I always look around....and guess who is standing somewhere.......watching.

One time I was in front of the building.....I was looking out for him....turned left....nope...turned right and he was 5 feet from me....where did he come from !!!

LOL.

Agree.....our top 5 pick should be right off the table.....I just can't see how we can realistically improve the quality of that pick by "mixing it up".

And we should all stop foaming at the mouth re potential Free Agency players.

It is just so damn hard to get those types of players....the clubs are just so much smarter with trying to keep their FA players.

I often wonder....how on earth did our Football Dept get to the point it had.

-Was it a lack of finances to get the best people?

-Was the club getting too "cosy/comfortable" with our sudden rise up the ladder after 2014?

Let's wait till before/after the draft and trading period....the smoke will settle and we can see exactly where we're heading.

At the moment Long is still behind Lonie and exactly one year younger. Not a huge difference. Long just looks cooler doing it.

The other point would be I see Long sticking his tackles better then Lonie which is what we need in that small forward/pressure role.

Either way I've never understood all the hate for Lonie, if you are not a top 10 pick with an AFL size body it's very hard to make an immediate impact in your first couple of years (especially if the rumours of our poor development are true).

If we are offered overs for Lonie then trade otherwise give the kid a 2 year contract and see what he can become.

Maturity? Natural progression?

I don't want to be a downer but there is a reason people hold Hawthorn up as an example of a well run club and St Kilda not quite to the same level. I think in this case the narrative might actually be well deserved.

agree Gringo i'm really not sure why all the interest from us in Menzel. we have Lonnie Gresh and Long to play small forward. If rumors are true and Hill wants back to Vic I'd prefer we go after him.

Hence why Lethlean will drive things as CEO .
Little doubt Finnis will be moved on , done good job getting club back to Moorabbin, but they need
clear direction in Alignment , Academy , Sponsors , Development, Coaching and strong focus on
football club going forward particularly in the bayside logistics.

If Lonie gets delisted the new list manager is off to a poor start in my books.

The small forward role is ****ing hard and it takes time for a lot. Look at Betts and Milne at the same age. To delist a bloke that is in the form of his life when we have ten blokes ahead of him is ludicrous.

I'll be surprised if it eventuates like that though

Why the hate for Finnis?

Any rumour that he is looking to leave or for a trade will most likely have come from his manager.

As I mentioned earlier, it's 99% bluff IMO.

Let's face it, if Jack had an offer from another club on the table, his manager would inform that club and just say match it or he leaves.

Putting it into the public sphere, my gut feel is that he doesn't have a firm offer elsewhere. If he did, there would be no need to go public in order to get the club to negotiate.
