Jack watts debut this week

There's not much doubt the kid will be a good player.

It just amazes me though we not only accept, but we embrace having an elite competition used as a development league.

Some of the contests last night were embarrassing. Not for the kids, for the supporters cheering this crap.

While I reckon Watts is talented, I still havent seen him do anything (at any level) that screams potential superstar .... I guess we will see.
Honestly, what did you expect from an 18 year old KPF that can only train with the team once a week due to school commitments?

I sure didn't expect him to play this early, everything is a bonus. Somehow i doubt that you haven't seen much of Watts (at any level).

I'll show you a few glimpses:

Ruckman will always average a higher ratio of contested possession due to the nature of their position.

Jack Watts showed good signs last night. Importantly, he kicks the ball very well, so we should see a 40 goal effort from him as early as next year.

Did you seem him drop his head when marking?

on form he is the worst player currently playing senior AFL footy. Can't be argued.

Leaving aside the fact that almost nobody else except other trolls seem to agree with this ludicrous statement of yours, are there any other 18-year-old school kids with bugger-all AFL experience you'd like to take potshots at Rose? I ask merely out of curiosity...

Remember Roughead took freakin ages to do something.

Ive seen alot of Watts as a junior and last night and hes never really made me think he'll be a superstar, just a very good forward. Get some muscle in those arms so he can start bullying these weaker defenders and he'll become a bit of a monster i reckon, though.

You do realise that Watts did a limited, or very limited pre-season. You ask any senior AFL player, let alone a raw draftee that without a solid preseason, you are going to struggle a bit.

The trouble is on sites like this, you get your pizza-faced-zit-infested knowalls who know **** all trying to look clever.

I'd say 90% on this board would know **** all about football except what they see on television and read in the herald sun.

It was my opinion before the draft that any club that passed on Natainui would regret it - I'll stick to that.

I agree with David Parkin - Why play Watts at all this year?...He is talented and his future looks good but what is the hurry - if he didn't play it wasn't going to cost Melbourne a finals spot - missing the first season hasn't done Dangerfield any harm at Adelaide.

Watts has been thrown in the deep end now - let's hope he takes no harm from his early baptism of fire and high expectation - there was a similar situation with Tom Hawkins who debuted early but in a strong team and eventually was given more time to develop.

and he's still in a strong team and is only getting selected because Geelong can afford to carry this passenger. Perhaps Melbourne should look at Tommy's path and tread more wisely with Watts.

Getting a few games into him this year won't do him any harm, in fact I reckon it will benefit him in the coming years.

Fact:

Watts' first 2 games = 17 possessions - 2 goals

Riewoldt's first 2 games = 16 possessions - no goals

Fevola's first 2 games = 2 possessions - no goals

Watts is a class act and I've seen enough in the first 2 games and last year in the under 18 championships to see a potential star. 196cm class key forwards are as rare as hen's teeth - just ask Geelong and the Dogs.

I'm not sure why the fascination from other clubs supporters though. Worry about your own kids.

Your club has pumped up the tyres of Watts plenty and he's a number one draft pick which brings extra attention. Deal with it.

Must be working... more attention being focused on us Demons in various parts of BF lately than on Geelong even...

Obviously raw and not physically ready at the moment. Looks very weak out there. Not to say he doesn't show good glimpses. Looks a very good kick on goal, moves brilliantly for a man of his size and when he sticks his hands up over his head there ain't many defenders who'll be able to get high enough to thump it away - he'd be pushed off the ball fairly easily at present but nothing that a few preseasons can't rectify.

Honestly, if I had to liken him to anybody, it'd be a weak, skinny Riewoldt. Have no issue with him being given a taste of it this early in his career. Give him a rest when he needs to and throw him back in the seconds every now and then. It'll do him a lot of good going into the preseason knowing how big a step up it is to playing AFL footy.

This week he showed his ability to find space and take marks in the forward 50, he also gave us a glimpse of his goal kicking accuracy. He went when it was his turn, wasn't afraid to put his body on the line, even had a couple of good tackles. Not bad for a kid still in school and honestly I wasn't expecting anything at all from him this year.
Back at draft time I was concerned that we had made an error in not taking Naitanui, who I know is going to be an absolute gun, but eveytime I see Watts play he does things that are completely unexpected. The kid is going to be a very special player and I'm more than happy to wait for it to happen.
