SEN have got Kornes on the up in the footy power stakes (pun fully intended). Now who does he work for again..?

36. Kane Cornes

Broadcaster
Last year: 48

One thing is clear when it comes to the various media platforms on which the former champion Port Adelaide midfielder appears – you will never be left in any doubt as to what he might be thinking. He has morphed into the Australian sports media’s version of ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. Cornes holds some of the strongest opinions in the game and lays them out patiently and logically. They might not always be correct, but his ability to engage (and enrage) fellow panellists, listeners and guests on TV and radio makes him an excellent broadcaster and a must-follow in-season. He has carried the tenacity that was a feature of his decorated playing career into broadcasting and he works a punishing schedule during the season.

Controversial maybe, but I thought Rodan was our best player across 2008-2012.

From a spectator POV he was the only one who looked like he could change the momentum of a game.

Also, a B&F is not always the best player but the one player who did what the coach asked them to do. If Kornes tagged his man successfully he'll get the max coaches votes after the game, that's why he won 4 of them.

Ebert should’ve got it in 2012. Another example of how dysfunctional the joint had become.

Should've been BnFs

I went to the 2012 B&F - part of Big Footy's sponsorship, a last minute call up by Ford to replace a late withdrawal - and there was genuine surprise, I won't use shock, in the room that Ebo (or Broadie) didn't win it, and Kane did.

Kane polled a lot of votes in the last few games when Buddha took over. He won on 18 and Ebo and Broadie got 16.

It was the period where the match committee as a group voted 4,3,2,1 or 0 per player, rather than the 4 or 5 coaches vote individually 4,3,2,1,or 0 like before the Primus years. Since Hinkley started it has been 4, 5 or 6 coaches give each player 5,4,3,2,1 or 0 votes.

19 games averaging less than 20 touches, versus the Indian Summer of Tredrea with 51 goals and 27 score assists. Still Tredrea.

Jackson Trengove 11

Robbie Gray, for mine. Played all 22 games.

• 32 goals #1 (Port)
• 24 goal assists #1
• 6 Brownlow Votes #1
• 214 contested possessions #1
• 68 clearances #2
• 29 marks i50 #2
• 395 disposals #3
• 85 tackles #4
• 62 i50’s #4

An absolute breakout season amidst comical adversity of the kind that saw a ton of similarly-placed Carlton/Melbourne/Richmond young guns melt into obscurity.

IIRC, Troy Chaplin nearly won our 2012 B&F.....

IIRC he was in front at mid point. =4th on 14 was Dom, Schulz, Hoff and Chaplin.

Shows the weakness of a committee system voting rather than individual coaches voting.

It was atrocious. Like, it was essentially 1 = playing your role / 3 = best on ground.

So turning up 3 times and not pooing your pants = Schulz or Robbie going absolutely HAM against all odds

It's almost as if a player who accumulated possessions without ever hurting the opposition was valued by the coaches more than players who genuinely influenced results without racking up huge numbers of possessions.

As out of his depth as Primus was, he recognised it early

Just remembered, Chaplin didn't play the last 3 games, and looked up his record and he also missed Rd 19 the GWS disaster game, and was on crutches at the B&F.

So yeah, he might have won if he played 3 or 4 of those 4 games he was injured in 2012.

Cursed timeline.

Shaun Burgoyne's best year was '06, the year he was AA. I think he came second to Lade in the B&F that year. He wasn't as consistently damaging in '07.
