KM, lets say Essendon acquire 26 from the Dees for Hibberd, giving us 1, 19 and 26. Who do you think would be a good fit at each of those picks? McCluggage seems to be firming as the choice at 1, but the rest seem to be a bit up in the air.. Thanks

Hey KM,

Who do you rate the best medium defender in this draft pool? Note - must be able to line-break (fast), have efficient kicking, nullify his opponent and reasonable marking skills?

Sorry, its a bit specific, but something I think the Cats really need to manage opposition small forwards.

Cheers

Ben Ainsworth meet Andrew McGrath shut down HBF.

A few on the Brisbane board are hoping for a Priority Pick at 3 so the Lions can pick Ainsworth and McGrath back to back.

Hi KM,

Thank you for your effort in this thread.

Could you provide your top 5 prospects in terms of future Dream Team potential for midfielders, backs and forwards.

Cheers.

It all depends on eligibility. There will probably be several players I assume will get fwd or back eligibility who simply don't.

To offer up the names though:

Back:
1. Andrew McGrath
2. Harry Perryman
3. Jack Scrimshaw
4. Luke Ryan
5. Alex Witherden

Fwd:
1. Tim Taranto
2. Ben Ainsworth
3. Daniel Venables
4. Sam Powell-Pepper
5. Shai Bolton

Likely mid eligible who may/may not receive dual position eligibility:
1. Hugh McCluggage
2. Will Brodie
3. Will Setterfield
4. Jack Bowes
5. Willem Drew
6. Brad Scheer
7. Kobe Mutch
8. Dylan Clarke
9. Zac Fisher
10. Jonty Scharenberg
11. Jack Graham
12. Jarrod Berry
13. Sam Petrevski-Seton
etc

Some fair points there , I guess it depends on how much one puts into the endurance side.He seemed to get a lot of uncontested ball from his running when I watched him. I sort of thought of him as a Blitz Rieowoldt type that could run and leadup but I cant visualise him taking the big pack marks at this time...but sometimes , as you would know , lighter framed guys tend to get better at that after a few Kgs are added. His running and setshots impressed me will be worth watching where he end up going.

Sproule to me just doesn't seem like someone who wants to physically impact games. He is still 84kg+. That's not underweight. He should physically be exerting more influence and impacting contests physically much more than he is.

Wing feels to me at the moment like Sproule's best position, as he just doesn't have the physical edge to play kpp.

He's someone I'd let someone else draft. But if he dropped into the rookie draft I'd take the chance given his height and endurance and then just play around with his best position as he develops and see where he best fits.

Taranto has been terrific this finals series with his game on the weekend a standout. His kicking can be hit and miss but he wins the footy inside and out and is generally clean by hand, good overhead and damaging around goal. should he be talked up more as a top 10 pick?

Agree with you on Taranto. You'll be interested to hear what I've got to say about him in my weekly wrap which should go up some time tomorrow.

Made a mention of what you're saying and more on Taranto.

Hi knightmare

Do you see marshall about the same as daniher (in his draft year) size wise very skinny and would take 3-4 years to grow into his frame and could marshall have the same ability as daniher, lynch and these type?

Is venables a chance to get to essendon's pick 19 or will he be gone by then?

Thanks
Love your work

Daniher is the more advanced and better talent relative to Marshall. Daniher had some big games as a junior. Marshall just hasn't.

Marshall I'm slowly tempering my expectations of. I don't have him anymore in the Lynch or even Daniher category. But the chance is still there for him to be a good one.

Venables may be there at Essendon's pick 19. He is seen as someone who could go as early as mid 1st round or could slide into the early part of the second round. Definitely one to consider if there.

Knightmare with the write up on Zac sproule do you think people saying he's a second round pick or even late first round are wrong

I wouldn't be comfortable picking Sproule in the first or second round if I'm a club recruiter. But each recruiter will have their different view on Sproule.

There is variation in views of Sproule. Both best position and where they'd be prepaired to pick him. Some may still feel late first round. Given his height and endurance by position it wouldn't surprise me if he featured second round. First round feels high, but that would be more a sign of a club needing a key position player and lacking good options.

Hey knightmare who do you think the saints will be sniffing around with pick 10? Cheers

Tim Taranto if there would be one the Saints would likely look at closely. Jack Scrimshaw and Daniel Venables would be two others to consider. *all failing a notable slider.

Tom Maloney any chance of being picked up KM?
his 4 goals were more than handy

Not invited to the state or national combines. Unlikely to be a strong consideration.

How do you see the range for Griffin Logue? Is he the best KPD this draft?

It's a rare draft that I look at as lacking a key defender that excites me.

Macreadie has not excited.

Logue was poor during the Under-18 Championships but then excellent in the WAFL. There is also talk from some that he may develop into a midfielder.

There aren't any I'm in love with the game of.

Increasingly though Logue does seem the popular choice for first key defender chosen. Terrific athlete with some power to him.

McCluggage, Berry and Drew (the North Ballarat Rebels trio) could all receive consideration with those selections as guys who likely go around those selections and fit the Essendon list well.

If you call around 180cm medium size, Andrew McGrath ticks all those boxes.

At 193cm, while not a key defender, Jack Scrimshaw also fits this criteria pretty well.

After those two, you're choosing which boxes you want ticked.

Surprised you have SPS that low considering he's been talked about as a top 5 pick all season would he make a better medium forward at AFL level than midfielder?

Only the one 30+ disposal game at colts level this season. No reserves or league games.

Petrevski-Seton is high impact but an not extreme high production or a super strong contested ball winner.

He's not someone you'd look at, at AFL level to have 30 disposals a week. He's probably an impactful 20-25 disposal a game type in his prime.

He moves a lot like Daniel Wells that Petrevski-Seton player... Fair comparison? Will be a good player I think.

Any chance Griffin Logue makes it to round 2? Also do you predict any of the GWS academy boys to not have bids matched?

From a numbers standpoint Wells is probably what you're looking at roughly. As a player comparison Wells is probably a better comparison than my Burgoyne comparison for SPS and it's fairly representative of his ability.

Possibly there in the second round but increasing likelihood that he pushes late first round.

Setterfield and Perryman should be matched I'd imagine given just how talented they are. They're top 10 in draft quality talents, so they can't not. Macreadie, Mutch and Sproule may be matched if bid on.

Everyone else I expect GWS to pass on which just means opportunity for other clubs if they like any of GWS' other academy talents.

Chances of Michael Romero being father son listed by the Dogs? Or is he more likely to be rookie listed?

Km can you please tell me a bit about Michael Gibbons?
Gibbons is a jet. Former skipper the Bushies. Won best on Ground for Williamstown in Development League GF in 2014, BOG in VFL Grand Final last year, JJ Liston Medallist 2016. Has a tremendous CV and could be a Sam Mitchell type..great skills and tough.

Yeah i jusr read that in a foxsports article. I was Surprised he wasn't recruited last year. I watched a couple of his highlights last night and i was impressred. Would be very handy midfield depth atleast for the eagles.

I don't think Claremont ever play their jnrs in the league team.

Would be surprised to see Romero picked in the national draft. Rookie chance.

Small midfielder who has been excellent for a few years now in the VFL. Improves each year.

Probably this years best performed VFL midfielder. Has performed well in big games and v good opposition consistently. Strong contested ball winner and able to win first possession at the contest. Good tackler. Can find it on the outside. Covers the ground well - good endurance and pace above average.

His weak point is his footskills which lack consistency and hurt factor. He also is more a pure midfielder than someone you'd rotate forward.

But if you're after a ready to play midfielder. Gibbons if you've got enough skilled guys through there could be a good choice.

I don't think Claremont ever play their jnrs in the league team.

SPS did play a league game last year.

The main point is that SPS has for what is a lesser competition still had only good but not great numbers - suggesting his production while it can be fine at AFL level doesn't suggest he'll be a Dane Swan/Tom Rockliff etc. A more reasonable prediction would be that SPS is a 300-500 disposal a year player.

Have heard we are super keen on Kayle Kirby Knightmare. Thoughts on him at the Pies?

Wouldn't be at all surprised given he had the 5 and 4 goal games in the VFL for Richmond. Collingwood and Matt Rendell more specifically has long valued performance v state league competition and with Kirby getting those goal totals and needing some more forwards. Kirby ticks some of those key indicator boxes Collingwood will be looking at based on their values.

He is strong at 181cm, 86kg. Clean and dangerous at ground level. Good finisher around goal. Strong 1v1 mark. Has some quickness. Good pressure player i50.

Just not someone who has the endurance to push up the ground.

Hey KM. On SPS he did play senior footy last year IIRC. Was wondering why he hasn't been called up to the seniors this year ? He has already shown what he can do as a bottom age player, so will still go pretty high in the draft but looking back at he's year he didn't get to anywhere near the level many of us were expecting coming into his draft year.
On Mecreadie think the Giants will most likely take him. With Marchbank on the way out they will want to add another tall running defender to there list.
