Also, looking forward to Brisbane selecting Worpel and Norf select one of the Ranges boys.

Assuming Brisbane finish bottom 2 or so. I'm not expecting Worpel to be chosen. He's a big body arguably the dominant contested baller in this draft based on play last year, but is not the ball user with other tricks to go that, that high on draft day.

It was tongue in cheek Knighta. :D

would you have Worpel clearly in front of Fogarty Km? we already have 2 first round picks, ours and ports.
IMO the lions need an inside bull and an outside pacy mid/forward type, come on down Darcy Fogarty and Jayden Stephenson.

Great to have you back. Lions need a lot of mids this draft specifically ones with serious pace and good foot skills. Ballenden probably top 10 at this stage which is an added bonus.

Lochie O'Brien, Hunter Clark and Luke Davies-Uniacke are some initial names for you to fill speed/skill needs.

I'm excited for Darcy Fogarty!

In the mix for the top pick. Looking pretty great.

Fogarty clearly ahead of Worpel at this stage. Has more tricks and much greater versatility.

i thought he was, must have misunderstood your previous post. thanks. i like the player comparisons Km, who would you compare Fogarty, Stepenson, Worpel and O'Brien to past or present?

Above I was just suggesting Worpel while a possible first rounder probably isn't say top 5 at this stage until he adds more to his game. Others ahead of him for now. Dominant as he is at the hard stuff.

I have Fogarty way ahead of Worpel, and I'm the Worpel cheerleader on the Lions board.

Not sure we can get both Fogarty and Stephenson. Still need clarification that we can't or don't have to use, a 2017 pick traded in in 2016 on matching a bid for Ballenden.

i am almost certain you don't have to use traded in picks to match academy bids. Knightmare ??

A pick is a pick. If you own it. You can use it to match bids.
Thing is we don't want to use it to match a bid.

At last years Lions draft night dinner put on by the club, one of the Lions scouts said that teams who trade in a future pick do not have to use that pick to match a bid on an academy player.

During last years trade period, the Lions traded in Ports first round pick. Say that pick fell at 9, and the Lions pick lands at 2.

Lions draft player X at pick 2. Team Y bids on Connor Ballenden at pick 5. Lions match the bid, but do not have to use pick 9 which belongs to the Lions, but rather use their second and third round picks to match the bid, leaving pick 9 (now moved back to pick 10) to use on another non academy player.

In the situation you mention, the next pick 9 is used for Ballenden to match pick 5. It's that next pick that is used in the bidding system. You don't have the flexibility to compile later round picks and add the points up anymore.

i'm confused, i was under the impression that you could use that traded in selection to match a bid in the situation briztoon suggested but you don't have to.

That's what we all originally thought.

But as I said, some one on the Lions staff, at an official club function said that we may not have to use pick 9 to match the bid. There has been a fair amount of discussion on the Lions board about this since last years draft.

Definitely the rules so far have been as Knightmare stated - start with next pick and work from there. I'd never say the rules couldn't change in future, but I would honestly doubt it.

Bit of a case of both right I think. We don't have to use Ports pick however we have to match with one pick only. It means if we want to use our second pick on Ballendon if he isn't picked before our first rounder and not use the Port pick, we will be liable for the deficit in 2018. That's what we will weigh up deciding whether we use it or not. (I think)

So it looks like we've got pick 1 in the bag and we need a KPF to build our forward line around.

Our strike rate with first round picks is horrendous. Is Brander the no brainer at the moment? Only 83kg as a 195cm kpf seems light, could he play Rnd 1?

Nothing set at this stage. Movement sure to happen up the top end.

It's a great draft for key forwards and ruckmen. Not much for other positions.

Fremantle are in luck with this draft suiting the clubs positional needs.

There probably will be some clubs with first round picks shopping those picks for players. Fremantle I expect to be one of those buyers with a list regeneration in order.
