Plays a crucial role as the extra man at the stoppage and can be seen moving through traffic at pace to create a bit of chaos, then works his arse off to keep the ball in our half.

Creates scoring opportunities by doing this and is severely underrated.

His game sense and decision making has improved out of sight as well.

I wonder if it is we have lifted as a team. Murph and Jones are playing with more confidence knowing someone is backing up their efforts.

Is he playing well. Yes. Is his form leaps and bounds above what he was producing last year? No.

Whats different?

Last year we had a forward line that had Rowe, McHenry and Murphy in it. Rowe averaged .7 goals, McHenry averaged .5 goals and Murphy
.7 goals. Those three combined for 1.9 goals a game.

Enter 2023 - Izak Rankine who is averaging 2.2 goals a game. By bringing in Izak alone - he alone is producing what Rowe/Murphy/McHenry were doing last year.

It cannot be understated that we have a forward line that will have 5 first round picks (Rankine, TT, FOG, Pedlar, Rachele) in addition to Taylor Walker. I feel I could play in that forward line and get a kick.

I will leave you with the following comparison:

Player 1 Averages: 10 kicks, 5 handballs, 3.5 marks, .2 goals, 4 inside 50's, 2 goal assists, 2.8 clangers, 65.8% DE, 1.8 tackles, 79% TOG

Player 2 Averages: 6.4 kicks, 4.7 handballs, 2.5 marks, .7 goals, 2 inside 50's, 1 goal assists, 1.7 clangers, 67.8% DE, 4 tackles, 75% TOG.

Looking forward to you coming in and leading the comp in score assists

Will make our team even better

I know I’m banging on about him a bit as love an underdog story but when people talk about what he’s doing well they talk about ‘desperation , tackles , Smothers’ etc

Which is all true

But some are underrating his skill which includes super clean ball handling under pressure especially at stoppages and lately he’s been hitting targets nicely by hand and foot and making really good decisions

Hence the score assist and score involvement stats
100% agree. He’s actually got very good skills.

He looked gone for all money in those preseason games. Just couldn't get near the ball.

Good effort by him and his coaches to turn it around.

I still have my doubts how he'll go against the top sides but you can't question his courage or commitment. Has also sharpened up his field kicking to be closer to it was during that year as an SANFL listed player.

Maybe read the article and understand what the coaches have set Lachie as his role in the forward line then you might just get that those stats have very little relevance to his defined role when he plays AFL...

Currently he is playing that role almost to perfection.

So what you're saying is he has a... non-statistical role

Murph is a perfect example what experience can do for a player.

To be frank, Murph will never be more than that 16-22 fringe player, but now with 80 games and 24 years old, you can see what AFL level exposure even does for someone in that bracket.

I read on here earlier someone saying that they want our midfield to get to a point where they don’t see Berry again. This is 21 year old, 40 gamer who has already shown plenty.

Imagine what Berry will be like at 24 and 100 games. Some people make stupid comments on here.

Let alone players like Rash, Soligo, Pedlar, Michelanney, TT etc

For all the plaudits Murphy is receiving currently it's interesting that the coaches didn't pick him for Round 1

A month is a long time in football
Thilthorpe and Jones also.

Based on stats and age profile from last year, I cant remember if it was ESPN or Champion Data, but they gave Berry a valuation of pick 2 (top 10 in the league). I guess they rate pressure acts pretty highly.

Yep, a ‘best 22’ is always changing, due to players taking opportunity and really making the most of it. We’ve seen that with these three guys. Sholl, too

Happy for Murphy now that he seems to have at least some job security. Really making the most of his role, which is better suited to him than being expected to be the primary or secondary small goalkicking option

Champion data rated him 2nd best 20 year old in the comp.

Soligo 2nd best 19 year old

Is he still playing that role to perfection? I can play AFL to perfection if my role is to not kick goals.

I must admit, I have been reasonably neutral with Murphy. He hasn’t really been a standout in any of the games, until last round IMO. Thought he was possibly best for us, and took some great marks and was ferocious at the ball and contests all game. Hopefully this would give him the confidence to take his game to another level.

Do we need to bite the bullet and put him in the middle?

Even as a forward his best work is pushing up to the stoppages

His craft around goals is average imho but he's got other strings to his bow. We've been ordinary in the centre lately

Was actually thinking this toward end of pies game when they were winning every clearance

He might have got one centre bounce , would like to see him and Rankine get a few more
