I think if Nicks wants to stay past 2023, there will be a few not near the best 22.

Nix is looking for wins, he’ll want a settled line up with maximum experience. But with at least Rachelle and Rankine to be added to the round 23 side, someone has to miss out. Murphy has been dropped in the past, so will be close. Unless they decide to use him down back, in which case Jones and Parnell come into the discussion.

Really hope he's not near the 22 next year.
Some players are survivors

Murphy's not silly. He'll know there are others who are faster, more skilled, taller, better goal sense etc

So he'll do what he needs to do. Outstanding preseason. First to arrive, last to leave, every optional session and then some. Take on and embrace the sacrificial stuff - leading to create space for others, sitting on the opposition HB playmaker.

First to pat a team mate on the back for a good piece of play, first to help a team mate up after they get knocked down, brings great energy and voice when on the bench, eager and attentive in team meetings, memorise the playbook word for word. Dot every i, cross every t.

Bide their time if needed knowing there will be injuries.

Coaches love these guys.

He'll be near it - seeing he's pretty ok depth - but Rankine should end up being final nail to Murphy being a best 22 member seeing he's already lost the relative safety of being a defensive forward to McHenry (and I mean "relative" because eventually B.

Of course, that's unless Rankine takes to the midfield in a way that sees us abandon the idea of turning him into a Shai Bolton type., but eh, I'm willing to cop another year of Murphy being best 22 if that happens.

Did you copy and paste this from your description of Dmac? ;)

It's a mystery why we haven't won a flag since 1998.

All true. If our club is well run, it will be made clear to Nicks that development is still the priority, and he won’t get get his way at selection if he strays. But we’ll see.

There's not much splitting Murphy and McHenry. Both are extremely average.

I fully expect both to play most weeks. Murphy was only dropped for 1 game in 2022, the other 4 were missed through injury. Him (and McHenry) will be worse versions of DMac. Average players who get SFA BnF and Brownlow votes and list management will spend years looking for better replacements yet despite all this they'll sneak in most weeks. We'll just give Taylor/Pedlar/Nank/Dowling/Cook/etc the Worrell treatment and refuse to play them instead.

I won a trophy for 'most attentive at training' when I was 10 years old back in the mid 70's....

they are both rubbish and shouldn't be anywhere near the 22 - not even emerg

Remember when Doedee was held back for ages then finally got games and ripped it up. Likewise, Worrell finally got a game and proved he belonged.

Makes you wonder who is getting deprived of opportunity by these proven A grade potatoes.

He is a tryer and gives his all, he just lacks talent. He is Jaryd Petrenko, without the flair.

One thing I can guarantee is that he will again become the whipping boy when he has a few games where it doesn't work for him.
We can improve upon him. Get Kossi Pickett and we have no need for him, with the added bonus of more goals, more wow moments and better midfield performances.

Yes, a trier and these efforts do not always show up in the headline stats. Murphy is on the edge selection wise and these efforts only enhance his chances of retaining his position going forward. He will eventaully be overtaken but is playing an important role atm.

What he provides is important for team balance, currently. We don’t need him to be a goal threat now, we need him to provide smart disposal, particularly going ,I50 as well as run and defensive pressure. All of which he’s doing

Definitely in the lower end of our 22, but he’s playing an important role as it stands

Sure, but at this point he has played enough games for us to know what he is capable of, good and bad. He isn't suddenly going to start kicking 3 to 5 goals a game, or lacing out players on the lead 5 time a game. He will run hard, chase and tackle. He will kick the odd goal here and there and have some good games and some not good games. He is a good depth player but as I said, our team becomes alot better if we replace him with Pickett. You are hitting the pipe too much if you don't agree with that.

There is a reason we sent fending off multiple raiding attempts from other teams trying to get him.

When the matches heat up he seems to be right there with his best parts of the night which is interesting.

And your Pickett hope is likely a "pipe" dream...
Probably, but my point stands that his position in the team can be improved upon.
You don't think Pickett is levels better than Murphy? You wouldn't swap out Pickett for him?

For what it's worth I think Pickett would look at Port before us, as Uncle Byron works there and is a major influence on him.
Doesn't mean we don't try to get him.

Can never doubt his effort or his courage. He needs to lobby Champion Data to have smothers count toward metres gained!
Fair point - a good smother is like X metres gained. Although the value of X would be hard to determine.
Agree with the thought in a metaphorical sense, absolutely!
