Um wtf Tom Williamson has signed for North's VFL side and will play for them this weekend.

What's that about? Seems a bit strange strange to me that he'd 'step away' from our club and VFL team, only to sign for North a few weeks later.

I thought it was something that would stop him playing footy altogether. This makes it seem more like an issue between Willo and the club.

Maybe being on the fringes and feeling like his career was on line the line was one of the issues impacting his mental health and he just needed to get out of that environment?

The funny thing is with our injuries in defence and lack of decent options on the wing he probably would have got a crack over the last few weeks.

Maybe he just didn't like winning. He's played in losing sides in our AFL and VFL teams for most of his career. Explains North as the destination. Can get back to losing.

In all seriousness though, my first thought was that maybe playing some form of footy helps him cope with the mental health, but the pressure of being an AFL listed player is too much for him at the moment. I was a big fan when we first drafted him, but for some reason he just couldn't get back to that first season form.
Good luck to him. I don't have a problem with him signing with North. It looks odd from the cheap seats, but it's not unexplainable. We just don't know the finer details of what's going on. Could've just kept plodding away in our VFL side for the rest of the year and collecting his pay, but did what he felt was right for him. I will be annoyed if they play him in a different position and he starts playing well though.

Maybe a bit strange, however pressure / performance anxiety can be a pretty destructive force to certain personality types. Professional football is a weird one, it provides the support and structure mechanisms of a club environment, yet on an AFL list significant expectations and pressure to achieve / perform to a certain level that not all cope with.
New VFL side with no senior list connection might provide a fresh environment, no expectation yet still professional level club structures / routines. Complicated however I can find a rational reason for it pretty easily. Basically we have no idea as to what the underlying initial reasons were, so v hard to make value judgements one way or the other. If it's right for him great. He seemed a genuine guy that gave serious commitment and it didn't work out for whatever reason, good luck to him.

I'm like most - can't quite work out why Dow hasn't played more. I looked at his highlights from the Collingwood game just to check:

13 of his 21 disposals are shown and they're all really well chosen options and well executed as far as I can see. However, he had 6 clangers which are not shown. 5 clearances and 6 tackles is pretty good. I think he was named in the best in TheAge.

Was only given 60% game time so 21 disposals is on track for a 26-28 pos game on normal game time. Was surprised he got dropped the next week.

I've seen Pominoz put forward a few theories around him not handballing from stoppages enough in the VFL but I don't really buy that. He's not surrounded by Walsh/Cripps/Hewett/Cerra in the VFL so of course he's going to have to resort to a quick kick out of the pack more often.

I think it must have something to do with his inability to limit the damage the opposition midfield does. That Collingwood game was pretty farcical at times with the pies mids streaming straight out of stoppages running forward which hasn't happened in any other game this year. Not that this is all Dow's fault of course - this is just my best guess as to the part of his game keeping he's out of favour. That and the clangers.

I think it’s 95% got to do with the defensive side of his game. He has enough talent and strong statistical games to have been given opportunities this season so I can only imagine it’s because his defensive game is so lacking that he is a liability at AFL level.

I’ve been a broken record with this but playing kids who aren’t ready and defensively poor in the midfield hinders the entire sides development and why I backed Teague with Dow and SPS. You have got to be pretty close to elite to not be good defensively in the midfield.

SDK was a Blues' man!

Fair call I like Kemp too.
I think it’s a close call between the 2 of the them - SDK solves a need right now - but Kemp could be anything.
Probably need a bit of context as well. Pretty sure that our recruiters didn't know that Jones would not be available. At the time KPD wasnt a huge concern. Maybe we wouldn't have Lewis Young if we'd drafted SDK.

I'm sure that there is a sliding doors column here somewhere.

Highlights video won't show why he isn't picked. It's the bits in between the highlights that are Dow's issue.

There was a rumour that he cracked the shits with not getting selected. Never really gave it any credence, but this has made me rethink that position.

Maybe the nail that broke the camels back with Willo was the Frankston game where he gave away some undisciplined free kicks and a 50 I think which really swung the momentum. Possibly copped a massive spray and that was that. Don’t think he played again

Should not have been dropped. Lots of good possessions, good movement. You won't see hightlights like that with LOB or Newnes.
There were several times in that game where there were breakdowns in defensive running which lead to easy sidebottom goals.

It always looks like it is his opponent who has gone missing but clearly his opponent(s) got caught having to move forward to cover free on ballers . I didn't have the capacity to check where the breakdowns occurred but assume that the coaching panel did.

It was the only time for the season that it happened. And it cost us the game.bprobably won't show up in his highlight package.

There is a reason Dow and SPS at Wet Toast aren’t playing despite being top picks. They don’t run both ways. Both would have lovely highlights for the YouTube junkies but, team mates hate that shit!

Brother of a current player and supported us as a kids?!? That’s it’s…he’s ours!!!

On all seriousness anyone else regretting taking Kemp ahead of him?

PRINTED beside a brightly lit school photo of a boy with bleached blond hair wearing a cheeky grin are the words: 'When I finish school, I would like to be an AFL Brownlow Medallist for Carlton'.

Sounds like every young Aussie boy's dream, right?

Well, for Tom and Sam De Koning, these naive childhood aspirations weren't so far out of reach after all.

Picked up in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft by Carlton, you may mistake Tom as the brother who dreamed of donning the navy blue. However, it was younger brother Sam who set this goal, hoping to play alongside the Carlton legends he'd barracked for before he could walk or talk.

I now want him more than any other player not on our list. I don't care about our needs. I WANT SAM IN NAVY BLUE.
