IMO Durdin and Motlop have shown, is such little time, that they will be both be very good smalls. In fact I feel they will both be ‘elite’.
I am v much of this view as well. Really happy with both. I find the criticism esp of Durdin unwarranted. Has shown more than expected to this point, and both have clearly shown the traits that kids demonstrate early on who go on to develop into very good footballers.

I think we might be seeing a slight cultural shift happening with respect to list management - obviously the focal point right now are the Cats.

I'm putting 1 and 1 together and making 5 - so it'd be interesting to see some more rigourous statistical analysis across the league.

I reckon there is more "risk" being applied to drafting young guys, weighing the effort and money invested into their development, and then the potential of them taking off after 2 years. (they should lift the draft age)

Geelong is setting a bit of a blueprint - with continued investment in mature players - while Higgins might not be considered a win - hard to see too many misses. They 'managed' guys well this year. Richmond are following a similar pathway.

As an industry - the AFL is getting better at managing bodies and extending careers. Players themselves are probably looking after themseleves a bit better.

So this feeds to my $0.02 on our list ... I don't think we should be shy in looking at a couple of guys in the 28-32 age range if they are the right fit, and nor do I think we jettison a guy like Ed, just because he's 'old'.

Overall, it's good for footy if the industry can get more out of older players and extend careers. (especially if we're going to have to go through another cycle with expansion clubs).

Schache has barely impacted any game he plays.
Schache can be serviceable , good endurance and footy IQ , kick ok too and a good decoy tall forward , consider the impact Charlie & Harry would create.
Also could support Ruck position should it be struck with injuries.
Overall if he’s at a bargain cost, he wouldn’t be worst Ruck/ KP support .

Still like to get a KPF or KPF/Ruck that we believe will play next year to release Curnow to the 3rd forward role...
Hope we have someone in mind...

Don't mind the idea of Schache as a free hit...
Not the greatest name out of the bunch, could fill an immediate need for us and has about the same stats as JSOS but taller...
  • Averages a goal a game, with poor development... Carlton seems to develop talls really well...
  • Has the great ability to draw his defender away from the contest, allowing McKay and Curnow more space...
  • Is over 200cm and can play Forward/Ruck/Defence...
  • Cost picks and $$$ would be minimum...
  • Is an elite ball user...
HF: Durdin - Schache (201cm)- Cottrell/Fisher/ Honey
FF: Motlop - McKay (204cm) - Curnow (192cm)

Schache is worth a look.

Minimal cost huge potential upside.

I agree with the sentiment but disagree re: the lack of misses.

Just off the top of my head, they've had Higgins, Dahlhaus, Jenkins, Steven over the past couple of years. Reckon there may be a few others I'm forgetting too.

The misses are largely irrelevant though when you have one or two wins, which they of course have.

Schache is no good and most importantly doesn't seem to have it in him mentally. I would steer well clear.
I think that you have to see him through the Oscar McDonald prism (but one who hopefully is not perpetually injured).

Break in case of emergency and hope that he doesn't play but if he does have to play can at least contribute at either end. I'd prefer him to MacAsey for example. Provided he was on minimum salary and cost us a suffle of fourth rounders only id ve o.k. with it.

You could probably mount a fair argument that Higgins and Dahlhaus haven't actually been misses - and contributed to the squads development. Jenkins and Steven probably the true 'misses'.

Re Schache discussion - what is he 24? 25? - lot more exposed form to fill our backup KP stocks than any draft pick. Take a first round and a second round draft pick - then fill the holes with proven mature-agers with the right attitude.

how times change...

201cm, 94kg.

just turned 25, only 72 games thus far.

Worth a roll of the dice imo.

Well, there you go
I can't think of any but maybe you can correct me on this. How many memorable ones?
Enough to warrant Port paying a second round pick and most people thinking they had gotten a steal. He was good at Port too.

Watts was a genuine best 22 type in the league, he just had the misfortune of being picked about 20 spots too high. I don’t think he’s the best analogy for Schachen is all
