McKay will be fine. He's still going around for Carlton so it can't be that bad an injury.
We can certainly afford him. What did Charlie Dixon use to earn? McKay is dirt cheap for what he brings to the table.

Herald Sun journalist Jay Clark revealed interest from Port Adelaide in McKay is a “big watch” ahead of the trade and free agency period. “As a key defender at North Melbourne, he’s out with an injury now … but I think it’s a fascinating question to ask from a list management point of view,” Clark said.
“If North Melbourne finish third last and a club like Port Adelaide – who is probably the big watch on Ben McKay – if they have a crack at him, pay him $800,000 and North Melbourne gets first round (compensation). “That means they’ll have Pick 3 for example tied to its ladder position and they’ll get Pick 4 as a compensation pick. “You’re talking about (getting a) superstar. Marcus Bontempelli went at pick 4. For a fullback who became a really good defender last year … but it’s a really interesting proposition for them.”

The biggest concern with mckay is that he's another injury prone bloke to add to our collections.
He's played 52 out of a possible 154 games.
800k is a lot for a bloke who misses 2/3rds of games is a lot.

With how rare good KPD’s are in the game, it’s a risk we’d have to take
Is he good? He doesn't really get out on the park often enough to be able to evaluate his quality and when he does get on the park he's not putting up overly notable numbers
How old is McKay? There’s probably 3 timelines (to steal a term from basketball) running through the club.
The Boak / Jonas timeline (featuring Lycett’ McKenzie, Dixon etc)- we have enough evidence to suggest they aren’t good enough to get us to a gf.
The Wines / Allir timeline - I'm not sure if they're good enough either but they are still in their peak and could be our vets in our next flag.
The Rozee/Butters/Duursma era (featuring a shit tonne of players) - our best chance will be when that group (so including Marshall, SPP) are in their prime and JHF is just about to hit his prime years.
If we're spending any money we've got to either get a solid Wines era vet (I'm personally not super keen on this) OR a free agent in the Rozee timeline.
Anything else feels a bit pointless.

He would be amazing next to or behind Aliir and he would really straighten up the spine and allow our running backs to do more damage.

Agree. He would be fantastic. With the added bonus that he is a free agent and therefore requiring no trade capital, of which we are a bit short. But it leaves us free to focus on trading for other priorities too, such as if pickett were to become available.
Worth going for McKay for the North and Vic melts alone. Mean old Port Adelaide raiding North again!
Hard to see him leaving Victoria unless the deal is too good to refuse and above other offers. Other teams might be wary of his injury history, so that may allow Port to put up the best contract to lure him.

Yep that fits pretty well. If he’s good enough, do it.
If we got McKay and Pickett we are getting super close to the 22 we need.
Both would be in their prime when our young guys begin to fire up.
I would love to grab popcorn and watch that. The trade sanctions that would follow would make the Sydney-Franklin restrictions look petty.
But if McKay leaves North’s it will need to be a pretty heavy contract to get him to Port.

Ruck and KP Defence clearly the biggest issue. Wouldn't wanna overpay for Pickett atm with such limited currency.

Zane is a top five pick at this stage. Doesn’t leave the top twenty I wouldn’t have thought. So Port aren’t getting him without losing something big.
