Port: give up first round pick for depth-tier players.

Carlton: we aren't giving up pick 11 for 2xAA Dan Houston.
We'll get 2x firsts, because that's how the club will be able to spin a story to the members. But it'll be a trade like pick 12 and pick 18 for Houston and an early second round.

So effectively 1 and a slight upgrade

Two choices in front of us now in terms of list management. We either continue to go all in, in which case we need to trade out Houston and any others that we can for multiple picks and get both of perryman and cumming as free agents, then go all in to get lukosious. 3 ready to go best 22 players off the bat.

Otherwise we sack the coach, accept that realistically to get over the hump we need to spend a couple of years building again (not rebuilding) but drop down the ladder a bit, get some high draft picks into the team and re tool for a few years down the track when our mids are later into their twenties.

Anything less than either of these are half measures that will keep us in this endless loop of thereabouts but never good enough.

Boak has to go, Dixon has to go. As long as those two things happen, this off season will be a success in my eyes.

Rumour is Luko’s preference is Port (offer around 3.6m over 4 years). Cumming will be a crow.

$900k per year is overs for someone who a 3x Premiership Coach doesn’t rate. You’d only consider that deal if it doesnt cost you much in draft capital.

I'm going to preface this by saying that it is hard to make judgements on players when the coaching is so bad.

We have a very good list at the moment that is right in the premiership window. If we had a good coach, we could be talking a dynasty but with Ken, we may be able to jag a flag if we are lucky but as they say, luck fortunes the brave.

PORT ADELAIDE POWER 2025

This is assuming Houston has left.

Rioli, Georgiades, Byrne-Jones
Powell-Pepper, Ratugolea, KPF
Drew, Wines, Burgoyne
Farrell, Aliir, Bergman
Logan Evans, Zerk-Thatcher, Jones

Sweet, Rozee, Butters
Horne-Francis, 2ND, 3RD, 4TH

Players who could be upgraded - Ratugolea, Byrne-Jones
Players getting games but not locks - Mead, Sinn, Visentini, Lorenz
Players yet to debut but close - Jackson, Anastasopoulos

Ratugolea and Byrne-Jones could easily be upgraded.

PLAYER NEEDS

Our major needs in the 22 right now are:

Key Position Forward who can ruck - Charlie Dixon replacement
3rd Tall Forward
Dan Houston replacement - if he leaves

Lesser needs are:

goal kicking small forward
another high quality midfielder - but I always want that

Needs for the future:

Aliir Aliir replacement
Ollie Wines replacement
Willie Rioli replacement

DELISTING AND TRADING PLAYERS

The players who should be seriously looked at being delisted or traded, in order, and contracted:

Trent McKenzie - 2024
Tom Clurey - 2025
Jed McEntee - 2025
Charlie Dixon - 2024
Francis Evans - 2024
Travis Boak - 2024

Dylan Williams - 2025
Ryan Burton - 2024
Quinton Narkle - 2024

Very strong rumours of wanting to be traded:

Dan Houston - 2027
Ivan Soldo - 2025

I don't follow the SANFL but younger guys to be looked at:

Kyle Marshall - 2024
Tom McCallum - 2024

Personally, I would give young players 4 to 6 years to prove themselves especially to key position players unless they are obviously lazy or talentless.

Possible early retirement from brain injuries:

Todd Marshall - 2029

INCOMING

The draft this year is strong and said to have Top 20 players until the 40s.

TRADING IN

Harry Perryman - 2024 - Houston replacement
Joe Richards - 2024 - small forward, 22 or backup
Jack Lukosius - 2026 - overqualified 3rd tall

NGA - Benny Barrett
Father, Son - Louie Montgomery, Rome Burgoyne, Ollie Francou

Pick 36
Houston Pick 1
Houston Pick 2
Soldo Pick

With those possible picks, we should grab the best mid, the best KPF, trade for Lukosuis and then best player available.

PLAYERS IN THE DRAFT I LIKE

Midfielders - Draper, Smilie, Hotton, Lindsay
Key Position - Armstrong, Trainor, Shanahan

The List Management Team have a huge off season ahead of them and if Houston and Soldo leaves and we get good value, it could really help our team sure up good, young players to complement our already good, young list.
Doubt he'll be available but I like Harvey Langford

With Rozee, Horne-Francis and Lukosius, we would have the best 3 players to come out of South Australia in a decade (maybe 20 years). All 3 are still improving and Lukosius would be a much better player here than at GC.
Rankine is definitely better than Luko and Rozee, and you could make an argument that he is better than JHF.

Also Dawson

I don't think there is even a question of Rankine being better than Rozee. Its just...obvious? If you gave me the choice of trading Rankine for Rozee I would do that every day of the week. Same with Dawson.

I'd still take JHF over Rankine because I think a midfielder-forward is better than a forward-mid, but in terms of pure talent I think they are pretty similar.

If Rankine stays fit he is almost certainly AA this year, maybe last year. If he stays fit going forward (and playing in a better side) he will be a multiple AA, hall of fame player.

Lukosius has become a whole lot more attractive the longer it has gone since any of us saw him play, and with the realisation that Todd's career is in jeopardy. We have to limit the price we pay to a late first round, or preferably second round pick.

Lukosius combined with Georgiades makes for a mobile forward line at least, although I remain completely unconvinced about Lukosius' ability to apply intensity at the contest or defensive pressure.

The next piece is to have a taller forward who can hit packs and provide a marking contest around the ground as well as deep. Scully and Lord are the two candidates currently on our list, but both have major question marks over their AFL level prospects. If we do get Lukosius, then perhaps the best mix next year is to use Visentini to partner with him and Georgiades.

Small forwards:
Rioli, SPP, DBJ, Barrett, Richards, with Anastosopoulos developing. It's ok but still not elite.
Charleson should probably be delisted, and ideally we'd get rid of 1-2 of Narkle, Evans or McEntee to create list spots for other more talented players.

We should be actively seeking to trade out Williams and/or Burton for a late 2nd (Burton) to 3rd round (Williams) draft pick, Clurey (a swap for WCE's young SA ruckman might be fair) and Soldo (2nd round draft pick).

It’s all ifs, buts and candy nuts. Going on present form, Rankine has yet to lift his team into finals contention. Rozee and JHF are both better players at this point of time.

It’s completely wrong. Rozee is the better player and it isn’t even close.
I watched Rankine live against Collingwood this year. In the second half he single handedly almost dragged his shit house team over the line against a 'big club at the G'. It was just about the best performance from an individual I have seen this year.

Realistically Rozee could never do that. He is a player who down hill skis against rubbish cellar dweller sides.

Boak has to go, Dixon has to go. As long as those two things happen, this off season will be a success in my eyes.

The off season will only be considered a success if Ken gets sacked or they make a succession plan official. Otherwise it's just wallpaper over the 12 year cracks.
