Lovett to Saints for Ist Round Pick

Remove this Banner Ad

My god people over-rate draft picks.

Saints got a proven match winner who has at least 3 years of top shelf football left in him for pick 16 in a weak draft.

Happy that Essendon got something for him as he could easily have gone into the PSD meaning the Bombers got nothing in return. However I'd be shocked if ten years worth of pick 16 in this draft turns out to be better than 3 years of Andrew Lovett.

nah it's a bargaining chip. Burgoyne, for instance, is better than Lovett any which way you look at it. And if not it's still better than getting sfa, which I thought we would. It's an excellent result given Lovett's a ****head and wanted to leave anyway. It gives us either a massive bargaining chip, or a better crack at the top 20. No guarantees, but Lovett was gone regardless, so it's a gigantic win - for both teams :thumbsu:

Anyone seen Gunnar? I seem to remember him dribbling some shit about this very issue. Seemed very sure of himself, which is unfortunate for him

Congratulations to the Saints; you guys have got a terrific player on your hands who'll keep you on the edge of your seats and provide you with some magical moments over the next few seasons. I suggested that Lovett would be a perfect fit for your mob this time last year when he was being shopped around (as IMO you lacked pace and goal kicking midfielders) and whilst you've had a terrific season without him, I reckon you'll be rapt with this decision over the next few years. He's a perfect addition to your side and I wish Andy all the best (except for when he's playing against us, of course :p).

As far as Essendon are concerned, it's hard to say how well we've done in this deal. You can't judge a proven performer against an unknown quality until the player we draft with pick 16 has had at least a couple of years in the system; also, we may on-trade the pick for another player still, so who knows how this will end just yet. Lovett was always going to be worth more to us than to another club though, and whilst I'm gonna miss him, I think that a fair trade was reached.

Despite the fact that we may have potentially been able to get something slightly better for him, I'm also pleased that the EFC allowed Lovett to pick his preffered club (out of Brisbane, Port and St Kilda); it's never a bad thing when two clubs and a player all come away happy with a deal.

Re: Lovett a Saint

He's very good for the Saints.

He's a very good outside player and he can also be that crumbing forward that they need.

I wish we tried to get him.

In the end thats what i thought his worth would have been in this draft. Over time i was expecting a pick in the low 20s but thought he was worth more.

I think the saints will be the ones laughing at the end of next year, he has the talent to be one of the best players in the game and lyon seems to have been pretty good about extracting laziness from his players. If he can do it with lovett theyll enjoy a premiership next year

Re: Lovett a Saint

Seems about right. If Saints trade Ball for 14 they effectively end up swapping Ball for Lovett. Probably how they are lokking at it and given their list it works for them. Not sure Collingwood will have pick 14 to give or even if they do whether Ball is worth that but I imagine that will be what Saints hope for.

Re: Lovett a Saint

Lovett is a good get for the Saints. Their premiership window will be open for one more season, so best to trade for experienced players who also can address a weakness in the current list. On that score, Lovett will give the Saints some much needed pace and outside run.

Re: Lovett a Saint

Oh man, a player leaves Essendon for St Kilda to (in his words, not mine, settle down) play in a premiership.

The Bombers fans will be ravenous.

No we won't, while we would prefer him playing for us, it's obvious the club wanted shot of him, that's why they tried to get rid of him last year.

Good luck to you Andy, hope you can turn your life around & do well at the Saints. :thumbsu:

Re: Lovett a Saint

it's a great result for both teams. Lovett is going to give the Saints some serious zing. Hopefully he'll knuckle down and not get comfortable.

With the Saints intention of trading Ball to Collingwood, they'll probably come away with a pick that's not too far away from the one they've given up, so they've made an astute decision

Re: Lovett a Saint

End of Stephen Milne??? or Schneider???

Quality kick for goal, quick, good tackling ability. Might be the forward pocket they are wanting.

Personally I would like him up on the wing and possibly starting in the centre square - ahh I can see it now, Lovett charging out of middle and hitting Roo perfectly on the chest!:thumbsu: Milne and Schneider can stay put for now.

Luke Ball to the Pies for pick 14 would now be handy - but somehow I doubt Collingwood will agree to this;).

Im rapt with pick 16, spewin we lost Lovett though!

St.Kilda made a smart move, watch Lovett rip it up next year. It's a new beginning for him and with guys like Hayes, Montagna, Goddard and co around him, look out!

Essendon to end up with picks 10, 16 and 26 is a great result.

Definitely win/win. :thumbsu:

gees if the bombers get pick 16 for Lovett 2 picks inside the top 10 for Fev would be the equal one would have thought.

Not when Fev will be demanding $850k in his 2nd year.

Who is going to have two top 10 picks that would want Fev? A team like Melbourne isn't going to want to recruit a 28-29 year old.

Essendon are the only team to make the top 8 to have 2 picks in the first round and could end up being one of only a couple of teams from the top 8 with a first round pick let alone two (doesn't = success though, I appreciate that, having said that our drafting of late has been sensational! :thumbsu:).

Sydney is Carlton's/Fev's ONLY chance because the Dons aren't interested.

Re: Lovett a Saint

Will be a good player for the saints next year, pick 16 is a good trade.

Great get for St Kilda. The other contenders would not be happy about this move at all. Can see him waltzing away with the norm smith...

Happy to get something pretty good for him, but we'd want to use the draft pick well.

I'd be excited if I was a Saints fan.

The roar when ever he goes for a run is now yours Saints fans.

Dont worry - Saints fans heard that all day both times we played you this season. Absolutely tore us up.

Personally I think it is a fair trade.

Saints were lucky enough to store a bevvie of 17.y.o.s in last years draft (and jack Steven the year before) who all got a full year in the reserves and a game or two in the seniors.

We were five minutes off a flag and an Andrew Lovett type could have made a big difference against the Cats.

It was a major weakness of the Saints this season. We were a good defensive team and a fair attacking team - but apart from Clint Jones we are very one paced.

Lovett adds that extra pace that could take us one better next season.

Essendon are looking further into the future for their next flag so #16 (who ever that is) will be a regular senior in two to three years (I am surmising).

Good trade all round - and one A.Lovett cant tear us up any more :);)

Great trade for both teams. Lovett was a very handy player for the Dons, but seemed to have lost a bit of passion, and they have plenty of other quick players to take his spot. They gain another first round pick which can be used to take a promising kid or use as leverage to get a Burgoyne/Fevola.

Saints give up their first pick, but Lovett is exactly what we've needed for the past few years. Someone who can breaks the lines and create goals. Should have three years of his best footy in front of him and will be a key player in 2010.

given he's out of contract i don't think essendon could have done any better than that. pretty happy - 3 picks inside the first 26.

Agreed...without having any leverage this is about the best Essendon could have done.

Will be interesting to see if they try and on trade it for anything else though.

Essendon have done fantastic. Could not have done better than that.

But to be honest, Lovett is just what the Saints need. They have done well with their trading over the last 2 years. He is the missing link in the chain.

Considering this is a weak draft and Saints already have a whole heap of kids at VFL level just begging for a game like Armitage, Steven, Lynch, McEvoy etc...they have done what they had to do to get the forward crumbing/midfielder with extreme speed that they desperately needed. He is better than Peake as well.

Good deal all-round. Both teams would walk away thinking they screwed the other.

I suspect each team will he happy with that trade. Seems pretty fair to me.
