Caught up with the guys for drinks Friday night and was thrown into an expanse of analysis and debate worthy of only an off season.

So I thought I would share some ideas on the side and our new inductees. I have included small write ups on players who have joined the club over the past two years and others that have yet to play more than 25 games yet still may be best 22.

*All opinions are just that... Opinions. And have been collected over many beers last Friday with other Carlton supporters/members some of whom coach professionally.

PART #1 - CARLTON
() = Pick they were originally drafted at.

FB: Ciaran Byrne (R64) - Caleb Marchbank (6) - Lachie Plowman (3)
HB:
Sam Docherty (12) - Jacob Weitering (1) – Kade Simpson (45)
C: Mark Murphy © (1) - Patrick Cripps (13) - Sam Petrevski-Seton (6)
HF: Liam Sumner (10)
Harry McKay (10) - Jarrod Pickett (4)
FF: Rhys Palmer (7)
– Levi Casboult (R44) – Charlie Curnow (12)
R:
Matthew Kreuzer (1) - Bryce Gibbs (1)Ed Curnow (R40 - Adelaide)

I: Sam Rowe (R60 - Sydney) - David Cuningham (23) - Jack Silvagni (53) - Ciaran Sheehan (R60)

Ciaran Byrne: We all saw the talent that this guy has. Has amazing defensive attributes and solid pace. Can get over zealous and give away silly free kicks but the kid is young and will improve with time. We all absolutely hate Travis Varcoe now for that late bump.

Caleb Marchbank: All of us are so excited about this guy joining the fold and the joint belief is that he will have an outstanding season for us in 2017 and beyond. He was super impressive as a junior and everyone has heard how GWS rated him extremely highly.
Highlights:
Lachie Plowman: A few of us think this guy is a little underrated by some of the others. The fact that he is able to effectively play on both talls and smalls whilst still having sound run and carry makes him invaluable to our backline. On this we convinced the others.
Highlights:
Jacob Weitering: What a defensive general who we saw at times last year is more than capable playing forward. Such a good footy brain and will excel in the newly formed back six for the next decade. Could have easily shown his highlights from this year so decided to show some past draft footage instead.
Highlights:
Sam Petrevski-Seton: Pacy and clean by both feet, SPS will make a mark on the Carlton faithful early. We really like how he keeps a cool head under pressure and chooses solid options when disposing of the ball. Pointed out by one of the guys (Coach) that he believes he would be perfect to model his game around Bryce Gibbs

Liam Sumner: I, especially, have huge wraps for this kid as he is so exciting to watch. We all agree that he possesses electrifying pace and an aggressive mentality when it comes to defending, he unfortunately suffered all year from his plaguing foot injury and lack of pre-season. All agree he has a future in the Navy Blue.
Highlights: http://www.carltonfc.com.au/video/2015-10-21/new-blue-liam-sumner
Harry McKay: Not too much out or known about this guy but with his ‘hands like plates’ tagline we are all looking forward to watch him develop. Looks mobile while looking enormous on field and has obviously put in a lot of gym work during his rehabilitation. Hopefully he can have a good run at it in 2017.
Highlights:
Jarrod Pickett: Cannot believe he was thrown in on the deal with Marchbank. Super talented run and carry style player who oozes x-factor. Believe he is suited to play anywhere in a non-key role but predominantly across HB, HF & Wing.
Highlights:
Rhys Palmer: Think we shall be pleasantly surprised by this ex Rising Star winner. Has shown to have a terrific work ethic on and off the field and will drive the young brigade forward with his leadership.
Highlights: http://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/2016-10-21/get-to-know-rhys-palmer
Charlie Curnow: Probably sitting amongst the top echelon for talent on our list, this guy could become one of our greats. Is solid in size yet possesses agility and a huge tank which may allow him to be our prototype for the modern day CHF.
Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mro04IuAI6c
David Cuningham: This guy has made huge strides since becoming a blue which we believe was hugely attributed by his mentoring from Chris Judd. Needs to further work on his disposal efficiency and ability to find the pill consistently but we’re rapt with his progression thus far.
Highlights: http://www.carltonfc.com.au/video/2016-08-12/cdraft-cunningham-hl
Jack Silvagni: Hugely competitive and with a ferocious tackling ability that resembles that of his pop, Jack will continue to improve over the next few years. He has a mature football intelligence which helps him find space and correct position.
Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0MBlvUEEoI&t=6s
Ciaran Sheehan: Injury riddled but this guy can certainly play. He has decent pace and an incredible left boot on him which if he can stay on the park could be the like-for-like and perfect replacement for when Kade Simpson retires.

PART #2 - NORTHERN BLUES/DEPTH

FB: Simon White (R56) – Jessie Glass-McCaster (R1) – Kristian Jaksch (12)
HB: Dylan Buckley (62) – Harrison McCreadie (47) - Tom Williamson (61)
C: Zach Fisher (27) – Sam Kerridge (27) – Blaine Boekhorst (19)
HF: Kym LeBois (R5)– Daniel Corringe (10) – Billy Smedts (15)
FF: Cameron Polson (59) – Pat Kerr (65) – Jed Lamb (21)
R: Andrew Phillips (R4 – GWS) – Matthew Wright (R33 – Adelaide) - Nick Graham (54)

I: Liam Jones (32) - Dennis Armfield (46) - Dale Tomas (2) - Alex Silvagni (R24 - Freo) - Andrew Gallucci (R19) - Matt Korcheck

Jessie Glass-McCaster: Needs some time to get his game up to AFL level but the signs are promising. Often got found out last year in the VFL when the ball came in quickly. He has enormous talent though ranking in the top 10 for absolute running vertical jump, absolute standing vertical jump and agility testing at the combine.
Highlights: http://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/2015-11-27/blues-sign-rookie-glassmcclasker
Kristian Jaksch: Although he is definitely under-the-pump to show vast improvement this year, it can be said that sliding him from back to forward and back again has impeded his development. He hasn’t shown the attitude and will to succeed as some of our other recruits and some have always felt like his disposal is suspect. Hoping he can turn his career around though and push for a spot in the best 22.
Highlights:
Harrison McCreadie: Versatile utility, primarily used as a defender, who’s key strengths are reading the play, marking, versatility & foot skills. He is extremely inconsistent though and will need to work hard to get back to the underage form that prophesised him being drafted in the top 10.
Highlights: http://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/2016-11-25/pick-47-harrison-macreadie
Tom Williamson: Smart defender with good awareness and pace. His key attribute is his movement and endurance which was on display at the combine where he finished 1st in the agility, 2nd in the 3km time trial, and in the top 10 for 5 other events including the beep. This kid could really become anything.
Highlights:
Zach Fisher: Love how this kid moves around the ground and accumulates the ball. We see a lot of Mark Murphy mixed with Scott Camporeale in him which is more than enough to make us excited about his development. Will more than likely have a year to transition but exciting things are ahead for Carlton with this guy running around.
Highlights:
Sam Kerridge: Extremely unfortunate to miss out on the best 22 and the equal 1st guy in line to step up. Had a stellar debut season for us although troubles in his game (disposal) were evident by his time spent in our injury depleted midfield. We are hugely impressed though with his work rate and think he will be in the Navy Blue for the next 8 years. Looking forward to what role he plays in 2017 and how he develops and improves his game.
Highlights:
Blaine Boekhorst: Unfortunately so far he has been far too inconsistent in the abilities that he does possess: Disposal, run-and carry, ability to take a hanger. As such the majority are not sure he will ever make our best 22. Having said that, he has shown flashes of brilliance and as he is going into only his third year at AFL level, he may still prove us pessimists wrong.
Highlights:
Kym LeBois: This little livewire forward is going to cause some serious headaches for oppositions backlines in the future. Zippy, evasive and with terrific goal nous, We all found it amazing he actually made it to the rookie draft. He will be amazing playing alongside SPS & Pickett (The Three Amigos sequel) and think it’s terrific the club kept Andrew Walker on to help guide these kids.
Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaqeDmwHj34
Daniel Corringe: In the U18’s he showed himself to be and extremely intelligent ruckmen who would leap high and early whilst working on angles. Since leaving the GCS where he battled many serious injuries including one to his Achilles, and joining Carlton we have yet to see really anything from him at all. His attitude towards beating his opponent and second efforts are basically non-existent. He (like Jaksch) needs a huge year of improvement to warrant any chance of playing seniors and remaining on the list in 2018.
Highlights: http://www.goldcoastfc.com.au/video/2014-08-16/rd21-gorringe-curls-the-checkside
Billy Smedts: Could be a massive win for us if he can curtail the injuries that have plagued him over the last 3 years. Did some pretty good things though for a star studded Cats line-up in his first 2 seasons so will be hoping to stay on the park and regain some form. At worst, he is a great leader to help improve our young brigade.
Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLr8VMdg4eA&t=536s (long one)
Cameron Polson: We are all a little mystified that this guy went so late. Is a powerful small forward with good pace who can also play into the midfield. Seems to have solid skills and can lay a tackle. Look forward to seeing how he develops and what his role is in Bolton’s plan.
Highlights: http://www.carltonfc.com.au/video/2016-11-25/cameron-polson-highlights-pick-59
Pat Kerr: A extremely strong player overhead who provides a physical presence inside 50. From the footage and watching him up close he leads hard and covers plenty of ground with solid pace. Played a lot of school footy rather than state but is still a very exciting prospect.
Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJQYJnRhLSI
Jed Lamb: Mark these words! Jed Lamb will still be useful player for us going forward. He is our new age Everitt except this guy has more than just one gear and has a fair few extra tricks in his bag. Needs to work on a few things including his overhead marking, second efforts and decision making but has every chance to succeed and make it into our best 22.
Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZbAbkS8F6o
Andrew Phillips: Was a shining light for us at times in a pretty mediocre year. Is the perfect replacement if Kruezer is injured and will add pressure on him to hold his place. Really loved his ability to work himself into games through sheer determination but he still has an enormous amount of work to take the sole #1 ruck spot.
Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOqPBXx9j2Q
Matthew Wright: The other guy who sits equal 1st in line. Probably the most unluckiest to miss out on the 22 after he topped our goal kicking and had a pretty special debut season. Will continue to push and may well spend the majority of the season in the 1sts. He is no doubt a talent, a leader and a professional which either side will be happy to see him lining up.
Highlights: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRhCd8r_eLY
Alex Silvagni: Mature age pick up who he himself understands his role is more to help guide the youth. Has never really taken the world by storm at AFL level but was reasonably consistent nonetheless. We look forward to him mentoring the back half at reserve level and having a positive impact on his young teammates as they try break into the side.
