It's a good signing, but it's got ifs and buts attached to it and they'll be on Nicks and the other coaches developing a more robust midfield rotation, rather than just sticking 3 guys in 80% of the action.

Given it's only a 2 year deal the club is protected injury wise if he struggles with further issues, so that's a win there.

That’s simply not true. These blokes can’t help themselves. I understand that he had interest from at least one of the large vic clubs (more money too), but he chose to stay with the crows for varied reasons.

2 years is a fantastic deal for us and there's a lot of incentive for Crouch to play some great football to ensure his next deal is a big one.

Now it comes down to our coaching staff to figure out how to actually get some midfield rotations like all other teams are capable of doing.

The money is kinda irrelevant given our list and cap space. If it wasn't Crouch we would have been giving some pretty bog average players lots of cash.

Of course this is provided we aren't giving him way overs. But a two-year deal on $500-600k would be fine

Can't be too good of a feeling on Matt's end to go from being an AA, B&F winning midfielder to reaching free agency, receiving no interest and having to sign on a short, unders contract

We only really want a maximum of one (two at the very most on occassion) in at the CB’s at any one time.

We need to be giving a shitload more time to shoenberg and find time for guys like pedlar and the mids we bring in in the draft.

Out of laird, keays, sloane and crouch.. a fit crouch is better than any of them.. I wanted crouch gone though because we need to get rid of one or two of them and matt being uncontracted was the easiest to move on.

Geez, hopefully/maybe the ridiculously crazy rumour of “Keays for Rankine” is actually true!…

I really, really hope we spend the off-season developing a midfield brigade and not just plonk 4 guys there for the whole season. Good teams bat really deep in the midfield. We must get minutes into Schoenberg, Pedlar, Berry, McHenry, Pick 4 whilst Laird and Crouch shoulder the main responsibility. Sloane and Keays need to develop some flexibility lest they get left behind.

I was comfortable if Matt left, and comfortable if he stays

Matt stays at the clubs on the clubs terms, and with only a 2 year contract he should be motivated and driven to have 2 exceptional years to increase his market value by the end if 2023.

I know many on this board wanted him to leave, but I'm not in that camp.

Crouch when fit is a quality midfielder & we lack players around his age. Shouod be more about how we use Sloane forward more to bring through the younger players.

I was comfortable either way, its a bonus that the club has retained him on their terms

Two years is also good for Matt, he has an opportunity to get back to that AA and increase his market value once again

If you could turn Keays into something of value I’d be all over it. Classic buy low, sell high. He wouldn’t get you Rankine straight up but maybe form some sort of package?

That said Keays seems like the sort of player Nicks would covet, works his backside off, always puts in 2nd and 3rd efforts, runs hard both ways. Just lacks that real polish and decision making that caps his ceiling.

Yep, thats a massive bonus.. it opens up a heap of options..

if he is over his injury, has a massive pre-season and has a pretty good year next year.. given he has been given a small deal vic clubs may come knocking end of next year with a big deal for him and we will be able to trade him out as a contracted player.

If he has a massive year next year and becomes one of our best.. we can simply pull him aside and renegotiate his contract at years end and reward him.

If he is shit and injured again most of next year we can pay him out and say see ya.. and thus free up a list spot.

The two years and a reduced salary is a massive win for us.
