Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

I wouldn't say many of his decisions. I have been underwhelmed by Nicks for a very long time.

Maybe I seem Pro-Nicks because I don't try and blame him for pretend things like some on this board (like him coaching Rachele out of form and saying the only reason Berry has been successful is because Sloane got hurt).
No one knows where Sloane would be playing if he didn't get injured but I guarantee he would be playing. I think Nick's is slowly discovering that hitching his wagon to the young blokes is his only way of survival. I don't think he will survive anyway as he has no gameplan and he isn't a good developer of young talent. I think he was under the mistaken belief that the older blokes where his life raft. They aren't except for Laird, Dawson, Walker.

I think his game plan from when he entered the club was to play as may seniors as possible to get the extension he coveted and then he would worry about developing young players later. I think it's a testament to Berry and Soligo that they have developed so quickly in spite of Nicks lack of trust in the unknown. I wouldnt be surprised if it was one of our assistant coaches that pushed for berry.

Our forward 50 entry strategy does make it very difficult for our small forwards to thrive. And Sloane getting injured definitely helped Berry get a good run in the middle. Yes, Sloane was moved out on the day that Berry came in, but how much patience for a slow start would have been provided if Sloane returned to form at half forward? How much patience do you think Nix has for junior players that don't hit the ground running when there's a senior player available for the spot?

Who is getting the money? It's going somewhere undeservedly or we have a big war chest to lure home OOC ex SA players
With our young list we should have oodles of cap space to offer someone like Brayshaw a long term deal that is to good to refuse.

He is exactly what we need.

With Melbourne's mids, Brayshaw is going to struggle to get a look in there.

Berry, Brayshaw, Soligo/Schoenberg as our starting centre bounce lineup by mid-2023
Are you sure? Melbourne shifted him out of the midfield the year after finishing 3rd in the Brownlow. I feel our pick 3-4 has to start there next year and needs to be skilful and explosive.

Nicks is going to go down as our losingest coach of all time, no doubt. But where is he in the list of all time losingest coaches in the AFL/VFL? Can he become the No.1?
Pretty hard after Noble, Neeld etc. They are around 15% while Nicks is about to go below Dew around 28%

A good portion of this board is obsessed with unifying the undeniable fact of Nicks terrible record, with the coaching strategies of Don Pyke and his predecessors. Under whatever grand conspiracy theory they see fit. (The one's where the board is unsalvageably corrupt and incompetent, but also never actually does anything wrong because any individual act is due to Tippett/Vicbias/whining players and not anything the club did.)

Trying to square these theories with the unique failures of Nicks results in some violent lashing out.

Kornes says
“What I don’t want to hear from anyone at Adelaide today: ‘we were really pleased how we fought back’.

“If you hear it Crows fans, don’t cop it. The game was over at quarter time, finished, done, dead, go home.

“It didn’t matter what happened for the next three quarters, the game was finished.”
Cornes believes accepting that contest and appreciating the fightback isn’t the path that will lead them up the ladder.

“So that is a losers’ mentality… and that’s why you're 16th on the ladder again with that sort of attitude,” he continued.

“Don’t cop it as a Crows fan if you hear any of that language.”

And of course Nicks says
Speaking post-game, Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks acknowledged the first quarter was “hard to ignore”, but added: “From a full game point of view, to fight it out like we did was a real positive.”

We should just ask to play the middle 2 quarters, we are poor starters and when we are in there with a chance in the last we lose.

Only play the 2nd and 3rd quarters, we don’t have bad starts and never lose. It’s a win win and lines up with Nicks gameplan of forget about winning, just try hard.

In all seriousness we’d want to be improving next year otherwise he’s gone.

Don't listen to Kane. He predicted we would finish 18th and said we had the worst list ever. Now telling us we are s**t? He expected we would be worse so not sure how he has come to this theory

Man - we showed him. He said we would win the spoon and was worried about where our goals would come from!

And here we are sitting pretty at 16th spot and are 16th in goals kicked. Enjoy your humble pie Kane!

The article insinuates we should be better than 16th, Kane said we would finish 18th & our list is terrible. I'm not saying we are going great but he will pot us no matter what which makes his opinions irrelevant. Clear bias against us.

And he’s far closer than the average fan on here thought we’d be.

People don’t want to hear it because of the port thing but he’s pretty bang on most of the time, sure he chucks out things to bait people, but he’s generally man enough to say he got something completely wrong.
