Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

He was also "unco" when he won our B&F and when he played so well he kept Sauce out of the team, and that was hard to do under Pyke.

He's a really solid player for us when in form, but we all know he's down this year on his contested marking.

Sauce wasn't with us when he won the B&F. He kept Sauce out for a few games in 2019 but per our philosophy, ROB lost his spot to cooked Sauce late in the year.

And let him go for nothing?

He’s still a decent player, and it may have worked out, it didn’t but there’s a lot of hindsight heroes acting like giving a 26 year old ex all Australian and club champ a pretty modest contract is a dumb move.

it being modest was an assumption and is now urban myth. We have no idea whether it was short and high paying or short and low paying.

Not keeping up with the play, not getting the ball.

But you’re right, it’s hard to qualify, that’s why I asked. I can’t think of too many young regular players who have struggled to support that statement. The main ones are McHenry and Jones but they just suck anyway

it's a rubbish conspiracy issue to excuse why we're not improving under Nix.

Bicks might change it knowing crouch is on his way out.

Of the younger players who are regulars, who do you think has struggled to adapt?

I think all of them seem to struggle to get through 4 quarters at high intensity each week. Week after week.
We see a lot of comments about how the club values experience over talent on here. The reality is every single week we play we are 8-9 of our youngest players having an extra 4 pre seasons and 80 games of experience behind our opposition

And yet our seniors have been just as bad at letting us down most of the year.

After what's being revealed this week the fact Nicks has managed to keep the team in one piece after taking over the s**tshow and the fact Dawson came and if Rankine does then he's done an amazing job because im not sure i would come to the crows and to have guys like Tex playing his best footy considering the circumstances is pretty cool.

I dont agree with lots of selections and alot of the coaching moves etc but has a guy taken over such a basket case and not just the playing group but the whole club and crap thats followed.

Imagine the 2017 draft class 1st year, what a disaster and 2018 wouldnt have been much better.

Rarely does a coach see a rebuild through but i can see why they may have re-signed him because such a fractured group needs some tlc after the BS they have been through.

No chance, I'm firmly on on the Nicks train..

Can I vote again in the affirmative?

I’ve many posts saying I don’t think he’s a bad coach. I’m just very confident that he lacks the courage required to be a successful coach starting at a rebuild. I think he’s getting as much out of the players as is reasonably expected, but I don’t think he can do much more as his focus is entirely week to week.

If he’d taken over when Pyke had, with an existing finals winning group, he’d have Pyke’s record, or very similar.

Imagine if we could put Nicks empathy with Pykes footy brain

Pyke’s footy brain is an urban myth. Unlike nearly every other new senior coach, he took over an away finals winning group. He had no counter to oppo applying extra pressure at the contest and forcing hack kicks to extra numbers behind the ball and then running hard at us. He failed to devise a change in how Sloane played when faced with a tag. His pillars were no different to failed Craig, experience + continuity + drilled to within an inch of your life = success.

As soon as a coach had a plan to counteract us, he was a deer in the headlights. Just there to barrack like Sando did.

I wonder about claims like this which I feel are really common on this board - what would it look like if we had a season where, compared to the kids, our seniors were not letting us down? Is that only something that can be happening if we are winning a lot of games? This just feels like a throwaway criticism that doesn't have much to do with the actual issues the team has.

Pretty much all of our best and most productive players this year have been senior players. Walker is leading the goalkicking, Laird is our top possession winner followed by Keays, Dawson and Smith. Score involvements its Walker, Laird, Keays, Dawson and ROB. Doedee is our leading interceptor. Those guys will be up top in the B&F as well. If anything we seem narrowly very reliant on a small number of senior players to carry most of the weight.

Now you might say that's as it should be and I agree with that, but how is this senior players letting us down? We have hardly any of them and they are mostly doing pretty well, and the ones who have done poorly like Crouch and Brown are out of the side. ROB and Milera are probably the two exceptions there who have been average to poor but are still being selected - ROB because there's no good alternative and Milera because he's still young enough that there's potential he can build on this year's performances significantly.

We've had some kids who have done really well this year like Soligo, Berry, Fogarty if he still counts, and Butts and Murray who have been pretty good in defence and are both young, but as you'd expect our senior players have much higher outputs and we are mostly struggling because we have a very young and inexperienced team who are not yet capable of making the sorts of contributions our senior players do make. Maybe some of the kids we have aren't any good, like McHenry or whatever, but that seems to be a different problem to the senior players letting us down, which you can only get to if you start counting players like Murphy or Jones as senior.

We could have kept Campo on as the full time coach and I doubt results would have been much different. We were supposedly paying him as much as some head coaches anyway.

Or we expect too much of too few. I would agree over the whole season that Brown and Crouch b particularly weren’t great. I think Smith has been somewhat harshly judged on here. Laird Walker have been excellent. That’s about the extent of high experience players we have (ie 100 plus games)
