Opinion Matthew Nicks: Adelaide's Coach

Is Matthew Nicks the right coach for Adelaide's rebuild?

  • Firmly yes (I love what I'm seeing)

  • Leaning yes

  • Can't decide either way

  • Leaning no (but don't sack him yet)

  • Firmly no (he should be sacked)

He did it early in the year when he had no expectation but clearly is now just trying to make the finals, this was what Pyke did in 2019 when he was playing cooked senior players in the position which has passed them and reluctant to make changes to an underperforming side.
Also last year. He rightly keep sloane out of the midfield and played berry and soligo and we were starting to look good . He’s been blinded by saving his own skin. I’m glad we are loosing now . We will have to change this

Our gap of quality mids between 30 and 21 is hurting. Thanks to Hamish Ogilvie.

And even saying Laird is a quality mid is a bit of a stretch.

Every other club has drafted two or more elite mids since we drafted Dangerfield.

We haven't.

That is the BIG issue with our club.

Sacking Nicks won't fix that.

it's not him in isolation. its a club philosophy, only aligned coaches are employed.
Port have the same issue.

Getting AFL staff who have never lived in SA is hard.

Basically all Vic clubs have to reject them before they come to SA. That is how we got Rahilly.

Port's coaching box are all ex Port players, or moved to SA for family reasons. Goldsack.

Last few pressersive noticed that uts all about Nicjs. I thought he was a selfless leader but now realise he’s more interested in saving his own skin

His selections are arrogant.

He thinks he had our best 22 figured out in the pre season and has not reflected on whether this might be wrong even once throughout the season.

He's had zero eye for developing our players, debuting only Michalanney, and he's given increasingly limited midfield time to our juniors as the season has progressed.

His lack of rotation through our squad has led to us running out of steam in the back half of the season, even though a team in our position should be rotating a lot of players.

He is wedded to horrible senior players and mediocre role players with plenty of poor exposed form

He was going to play Dawson in defense all season until Dawson forced his hand and became our best midfielder overnight (because our midfield is shit)

He is tactically inept on game day. He makes no changes or if he does change things, they have little to no influence on the outcome. And often the plan he rolls out from the opening bounce is bad

We've also shunted off every young mid we had to the SANFL this year too.

Schoenberg should have been playing tonight and Hately needed more chances. He has talent.

Nank not given a chance isva tragedy.

Murphy has peaked as a player, but is a safe selection.

This game and the Essendon game were not only winnable, they were genuine wins a top 6 side should have won.
