McCartney to coach Bulldogs

Came as a surprise, but McCartney seems like a good choice given everyone rates him :thumbsu:

Impressive credentials for someone who never got the chance to play at the highest level.

I'm very glad with the choice from what I've read about him. I'm glad we went outside of the club for a coach. Anyone who can keep Year 7 students under control is OK with me. :D

Sounds like we definitely nabbed the right guy! His credentials are very good and his references are all outstanding. However, and I don't want to be a negative nancy here, but his lack of AFL experience as a player is a little bit of a concern for me. Do you think this could possibly be an issue?

Must be honest and say I was hardly inspired by the announcement. All I could think of was Peter Rohde. Nice bloke, knowledgeable, hard-working, respectable but ...

Now that I have read the various positive posts about this man, I'm kinda thinking he may be alright after all.

Any chance he can turn the culture of the joint around and snap us out of this life-long rut?

sigh at fb dregs, really need a moderator up there to delete comments.

Hamza Kades really has no clue. I wonder if it's just a troll account. then you have the fools agreeing with him.

How could it be an issue though?

Very plaesed with this appointment. It restores my faith in the club's process and integrity. I was beginning to worry that those rumour mongers saying Cameron was given the nod months ago were actually right. (Admittedly it would have been hard to prove one way ot the other if Leon HAD come out as the best man in the selection process.)

I presume the scuttlebutt merchants with their reliable sources will all make an appearance in this thread and apologise now. Right?

Given our problems with underperforming players (eg Grant, Stack, Hill, Higgins, Lake maybe, Reid) this is a smart appointment for 2012. From his bio I presume he brings more than just excellent player development to the club. In the longer term we need tactical nous, mental toughness, strategic thinking and good PR skills as well.

I also note from his video that he doesn't promise any great leap forward in 2012, just some "slight improvement at first". Sensible to rein in expectations like that. We should be aiming at a serious move up the ladder in 2013.

Hear hear! I wish I had time to collate all the whingeing posts when Eade was sacked about how Smorgon & Garlick were disloyal and had been plotting behind Eade's back.. I mean, seriously..

I think it's a terrific appointment. Slight issue in that he hasn't played at a high level but it doesn't seem to have been a concern in his previous roles. Has done a long apprenticeship and, as others have noted, whenever he has gone to a club they have improved. Has also coached several of his own sides.

With a young side his development nous will be a huge bonus and he is also strong on tactics. Good to see we shunned the nepotistic approach many of us had assumed was inevitable.

I recall Brendan arriving at Ocean Grove after John Williams was coach. The club had never won a senior flag and probably were a bit of a 'party' club, played better off the field than on. He sorted that in a couple of months, a few blokes who struggled and couldn't handle the direction moved on, 1 season later they one the first of their 4 flags in a row under McCartney. He instilled some hardness into the club and players. I recall a contested training excercise in his first year where a couple of players nearly came to blows chasing the ball. After the excercise, he stated to the group that those 2 blokes set the standard for the contested ball possessions, fight to get your hands on the ball first and then protect it and control.
Should sharpen the teeth of the dogs......Best of luck Macca...!!!

Cant' wait for muppett Thomas to apoligize on FC tonight.

Aka will be next to apoligize on his top rating MTR show........wait wut?
oh thats right.....

Hey congrats guys, from all reports is a very good coach and I hope he brings success to your club. From what I have read and heard from him he is a very straight forward man who is very honest with his players. In a triple m interview earlier in the year he said it was him that wanted Crameri in the forward line because during pre-season whenever there was 50/50 contest, Crameri ended up with the ball. I think you can expect your boys to play hard and contested style of footy. Good luck:thumbsu:

Their egos will dictate a response along the lines of..."our strong words against the Bulldogs forced their hands to pick an outsider".

Doubt you would see either of them back down and admit fault.

Not targeting you with this but.....some posters on this board question the credentials of someone to be a coach without AFL playing experience. Why then do the same posters who themselves have no AFL experience of any type, believe they have any credibility in criticising a coaching appointment?

Very happy with this decision.

1. For Hawthorn: It means we keep Leon Cameron.

2. For the Bulldogs: It means they've gone through a proper process, and not just appointed the old clubman. McCartney has a great record as an assistant. Switched on, can coach.

Some left field appointments recently have been good... Chris Scott... Alistair Clarkson... Brad Scott...

Good luck!

Brilliant appointment. EXACTLY what you guys need. Kudos.

Completely agree..it reminds me of a skit i saw Dylan Moran do about Soccer Fans in england, yelling advise to the best athletes in the world whilst they stuff their face with beer and chips...

Everyone has an opinion, however, everyones credentials on these issues is the big question.... And for that reason, no current day player gives a toss what anyone from the "crowd" has to say..positive or negative..They listen to the match committee, and for good reason.
