Handled the 2014 home jumper issue pretty respectfully too.

Speaking of which, I've overlooked that fool, Mark Evans - he's probably expecting a reward for taking on the SUNS shit show. It probably depends on whether he can turn them into a bit less of a shit show. Good luck with that one, champ.

I like Brereton as a commentator. No doubt he's more verbose

The main role of a commentator, some would say the only role, is to comment on the game. This is where Brereton gets a big fail.

Spends far too much time espousing his own theories and self appointed brilliance during the game rather than commenting on the game itself. It's as if his auditioning for a coaching role.

STFU Brereton and comment on what's happening on the field. It ain't about you mate.

Long enough to be (even more) annoying, but too short to take a slash...

So longer ruddy hardly normal ads ffs. Without a doubt harvey norman would have to be one of THE most annoying companies when it comes to advertising (TV, radio & newspaper). Forget about ‘eddie everywhere’, this stupid mob take the cake as far as annoying airtime is concerned. Won’t be upset if hn goes bust

Adelaide's Channel 7 News headlines its 6pm News bulletin with the suspension of Ollie Wines for 'breaching the AFL's covid-19 protocols' and includes footage from Chris Davies saying he expects players to observe the rules. Also says that Wines was 'no certainty to be selected'.

Not one single mention of their role or the name of their lead sports reporter, Doropolous, in setting up the interview that sparked the breach.

ZERO Accountability from Mike Smithson and his Seven News team.

Bloody disgrace.

Benny Gale seems like a logical successor, when he's had his fill of winning premierships at Richmond - turned a shit show into a mega successful club, former player's union boss, less likely to be awed by McGuire.
lol

He isn't a commentator though. He's a special commentator. It's his job to analyse what is going on and provide insight, to breakdown and draw attention to tactics and plays and habits.

AFL handed a shit sandwich...

SEVEN announces new extended broadcast agreement for AFL, but FOXTEL misses out

The revised deal will see a reduction in payments to the AFL across the remainder of the 2020 season, as well as 2021 and 2022.

The new deal also provides Seven an extension of two years for seasons 2023 and 2024.

In a statement to the stock exchange, Seven West Media indicated it expects to derive $87m in net benefits over the existing contract period (2020-2022) in media rights reduction, production savings and other benefits.

TV Blackbox understands Foxtel has also secured a reduced payment deal with the AFL. However, at this stage it has been unable to negotiate an extension to its broadcast deal which will expire in 2022. Late last month Foxtel negotiated an extension to its NRL agreement until 2027.

Foxtel had hoped to lock in extended broadcast deals for both codes in a move that would have provided long-term certainty for Fox Sports and Kayo while also locking out international streaming rivals such as Amazon.

No Amazon announcement, but the door is ajar...

Have just put this on the Footy Industry Board The next media rights thread.

Seven will receive a discount of about 19 per cent and an $87 million net benefit between 2020 and 2022 based on reduced production and rights fees. It has also secured a two-year extension on "improved terms", a statement on the ASX said. AFL industry sources said Seven's reduction, excluding production costs, was about $70 million over three years.

The AFL will now receive $730 million from Seven over the next five years, an average annual payment of $147 million each year. Seven was expected to pay about $150 million this year, with production costs of about $20 million
.

Industry sources indicated Foxtel, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp and Telstra, will save almost $30 million a year under the existing deal, which will alleviate some of the financial pain caused by the pandemic. However, the broadcaster has not secured an extension.

Telstra, which is the mobile rights provider, will continue to pay $50 million per year.

I'm going to assume that $17m difference between $87m and $70m over 3 years is production costs for 5 rounds x 3.5 games per round =18 games in 2020, production costs for scrapping Talking Footy and Game Day for rest of 2020. What about 2021 and 2022? What other production costs will they reduce? Can't see them making massive game day production cost cut backs in 2021 for their 77 games and finals games production costs.

Does $147m figure include contra's or not? Doesn't look like a cash figure to me. The rights figure in AFL annual reports go up by about $10m a year but that includes 7 + Foxtel + Telstra + radio rights. 7's component of that $10m might be $4-$5mil.

August 2015 Media rights deal all up $2.508bil but 7 component of TV deal covering 2017-22 was

So if I want to watch football I'll be forced to give my money to either Rupert Murdoch or Jeff Bezos?

It's like waiting to find out whether you have AIDS or cancer.

Why is that? In wet and gale-like conditions a hard bodied Wines was a near certainty I would have thought.

Who is saying he was out of the mix and why?

See Warren Tredrea's vid on the Ollie Wines - Will he go or will he stay? thread - he even hinted that Ollie did the interview with the fruit fly after being told that he wasn't selected

I wonder if Talking Footy and Game Day will make a sudden reappearance now.
probably not unless there is a big turn around in 7's finances.

The Wookie replied to my other question about other production costs cut with - "End to having local commentary teams for Seven matches and broadcasting everything from a central studio. Save them tonnes in production staff and travel. Outsource camera work if they arent already" - which probably means commentators will do what 7 has done at the last Olympics (and ABC radio commentators at most Olympics for minor sports, marathons, walks etc) and call games off the screen from a central location.
