Coach Men's Senior Coach: Brad Scott

In his press conference I finally realised how much Brad resembles an egg. Hardcore. Imagine him with a buzz cut!

Has anyone ever seen him and Humpty Dumpty in the same room?!!

We searched so hard for a coach when the whole time he was in Tom Cutler's pocket. Amazing.
I'm probably missing the "in joke" with the above post,
but I reckon we'll see a much fitter, trimmed down Scotty by the end of this pre season.

For the sake of including new people; The part about Cutler refers to a comment someone made years ago about Cutler playing like he had an egg in his pocket (it span off into a range of other egg related jokes after Cutler started playing like he’d broken a few eggs and made something with them).

I agree in terms of Scott getting away from the AFL House muffin/desk life, back on the track and getting fit.

But the egg realization & post was actually about his face / head being very egg-like. Yes, I was microdosing psilocybin yesterday but now I understand how eggy it is I can’t unsee it.

The Tom Cutler reference was somewhat of a Big Footy in joke.. for those who missed it.. in 2021 someone (does anyone recall who?) posted that Cutler plays like he has an egg in his pocket and if it breaks, his family will die. Absolute Hall of Fame post IMO.

Still loving the picture choice for this thread.

Was I hallucinating or did someone suggest Gia and Cara are staying on?

I hope Scott brings in a defensive coach since our last one (Rance) lasted 1 month or so.

We had a defence coach (Gia), Rance was always only a short-term thing to work specifically with key defenders on their 1v1 craft, as he had other projects going on that were a higher priority.

But yes, Scott isn't bringing anyone with him by default, he wants to get to know who is here and how it's working and such. "Once you make a change it's hard to undo it so you have to be sure."

The assistants we have are contracted and on decent wages so paying them all out would probably bust the soft cap (if it's really necessary to do the club can do it and pay the luxury tax, but I think they'll avoid that if they think it's working reasonable), and you're also supposed to tell them if they're out of a job by August so they have time to find another job.

I think it was TheGrizz who suggested he might just change what their responsibilities are if change is needed.

To clarify, I’m all for Scott’s messaging about being patient and building and no time frames, and I’m glad that (seemingly) the board has bought into that message.

But it’s gotta be asked why after 2 years of Rutten where success didn’t come quickly enough and we just had to sack him (not making a call here in whether that was the right course or not) that now the board has patience and success doesn’t have to be immediate.

Seems to me if we have another two lean years of building under Scott the board will be fine with that - after one lean year which Rutten didn’t make it through because “an experienced coach will get more out of our players”.

I can’t figure out if Barham is just a rogue egomaniac throwing his weight around randomly or if he’s shrewd and intelligent and knows what he’s doing.

My take on it is that some wanted the coaching reviewed at mid-year and were mad when he wasn't, some wanted Xavier Campbell gone and Brasher was his no. 1 fan with both of them having their wagons hitched to Truck, some wanted to chase Clarkson, and some (like Sheedy) wanted to make the seat vacant regardless of what they thought of Rutten or Clarkson.

The stars aligned and Rutten became the sacrificial lamb in order to get the numbers to overthrow the board and remove Campbell and Brasher, and chasing Clarkson and sacking Rutten then became the mandate.

I still say it gets back to what the coach says after a 10+ goal flogging. When the message seemed to be consistently "I can't explain that performance. We're on the right track" I can see why we moved him on.

If I was Scott I'd be aiming for a low finishing year first up. Rutten made the mistake of overachieving and then going backwards this year. Start low, and then gradual improvement after that.

Having said that, the list is better than the 2021 version is it not? I wonder if pushing to finals quick should be an expectation, given that this list has essentially shown it can achieve that. Albeit with a Stringer that carried the team.
Here is the 2021 elimination final team FWIW

Backs: Mason Redman, Jayden Laverde, Tom Cutler
Half-backs: Dyson Heppell (C), Jordan Ridley, Nick Hind
Centreline: Andrew McGrath, Zach Merrett, Alec Waterman
Half-forwards: Will Snelling, Aaron Francis, Archie Perkins
Forwards: Jake Stringer, Peter Wright, Devon Smith
Followers: Sam Draper, Darcy Parish, Dylan Shiel
Interchange from: James Stewart, Dylan Clarke, Matt Guelfi, Nik Cox, Sam Durham, Jye Caldwell, Andrew Phillips, Martin Gleeson

I don't think there was a great deal of logic to it. Truck was expected to coach next year and that would be when he would be under a lot of pressure to get results.

Then Clarkson emerged as an option and some of the board decided they wanted a crack at him, some of the board wanted someone else, and some of the board wanted an external review so the shit hit the fan. There was a clumsy attempt to lure Clarkson with no due diligence on our part (lol) and we were ultimately unsuccessful but it left Rutten in an untenable position so he had to be sacked.

Now we're kind of back at square one except the coach is more experienced, has a clean slate to work with and (mostly) the backing of senior leaders at the club.

It was Kakkle. Everyone thought it he was being flippant, but it was no yolk.
