I am not BMT's hugest fan, but;

BMT playing wrecking ball in midfield >>> BMT playing in the forward line

We've gained a best 22 player who is a guy that has the ability to crumb and snap goals. Sure it's not the most pressing need, but I am pretty happy about this. I think he'll have an impact similar to the one Ebert and McCarthy did over pre-season and early in the year.

So, we've acquired our first player of the 2012 offseason, and I just thought we could canvass a few views as to what we expect of Angus, get some realistic expectations in place.

He's played 150 games already, is age 25 (26 in January), and has missed nine games in the past three years with hamstring injuries. He's signed a four year deal with the club.

The club has talked him up as yet another opportunity to turn a forward into a part-time midfielder, which could theoretically happen.

So, how much do you think its reasonable to expect from Angus? Feel free to list non-games things you anticipate in replies.

**** I hope Gray stays fit all of next season.

This is so damn important, it's ............... I really don't want to quantify just how damn important. He'll be a new recruit for 2013.

Is my view on players getting far-too-long term contracts so variant that people need me to shut up now?

Shut up?????????? No, never.

But maybe times are-a-changing.

Free Agency has created a brave new world in the AFL, what was convention is now maybe archaic.

When you look at the clubs that have offered big, long FA contracts, they are all clubs that have had serious trouble with contracts in the past.

I find it extremely hard to believe a successful new trend in AFL football will be led by Fremantle, Richmond and Essendon.

Remember Gray doesn't expect to play any pre season matches at any level

watch him play SANFL from round 2, AFL round 5

I suspect he will play every game he is fit. I hope very much so at least.

I voted 60-80 as injury is always a factor.

As we will improve and he will age i think it will go from
Key mid rotation
Mid/forward
forward
Brett EBert now (shouldn't be in a good team)

Provided his Weaponised hamstring was a one off, should play 20 games a year.

Too versatile and solid not to, unless every 1-2-3 draft pick we select from 2007-2014 becomes a superstar.

Has plenty of ability. Big body, classy skills. If we get his attitude right under Kenny he could be a gun.

Add a genuine crumber + a consistent / injury free Butch + Robbie back to full fitness, and our forward line is POTENT.

Angus was at the club last week,

And as soon as he met one of the ex-players who now works at our club, straight away he spoke to Rohde and Cripps and said "we have to have this guy".

Said the same thing happened last year with Brad and JMac.

I like the fact that he has a nice field kick. Reckon we will end up settling him down on the half back line and he can sort of quaterback the team..............oh wait, we have a new coach. F***, I know even less sh!t now than I did before

I expect a stupid checkside shot for goal every game. He has history.

Depending on how Gray comes back from injury we could rotate these two regularly through the forward line and mid field. If we ever get our tall forward structure right, like we did in the preseason and early on when the weather was good and we didn't have injuries, we needed a crumbing forward. Monfries can do that role.

Going on Portia/Porthos's previous summary of our drafting 3rd rounders - which is what we have given up - then I can see him only being a big plus. I expect him to be better than every 3rd rounder in the list below with Broadbent the only one who will challenge him, and every 2nd rounder except for Stewart ( and in time Jacko)

Isn't he exactly the same size as Pearce?

True. I'm also assuming he was the sub for a few games, but wasn't sure which games.

Well how did you rate his shutdown work then? Bear in mind that the trade has already been done, so you can give us your true opinion. :p

Also looks like he likes playing Richmond too.

Quite a bit actually. Shuts down a rebounding defender while still popping up for 2-3 goal games. When he has played in the midfield it's hit and miss. He's a good kick and when he trusts himself to back his instinctive first option he plays well, but in general he's always been a bit too slow both on his feet and between the ears for a permanent mid position.

Barring injury he's been a lock in the side for years. He's still only 25 and has 150 games under his belt, so expecting him to really hit his straps for the next few years. Would be a valuable asset to any team off the HFF, think he was a steal for pick 48.

Side note: He's actually a nice bloke, but will definitely go from being called Gus to Anus.
