Simpson post match: "Yeah, I've got a tattoo on the back of my left hand to give me inspiration. It's based on an avatar of one our longest serving BF posters."

Few forward line issues which is expected with the Forwards we have seen leave in the last few years but...
Casboult - looks good, lets hope the ice is precautionary
Kreuzer & Phillips looked willing up forward and will clunk a few, but where are the small forwards?
Everitt was quiet last night - prefer him playing deeper forward
Not sure I like having Gorringe, Casboult, Kreuzer and Phillips in the one team - surely that won't happen in the season proper

41 inside 50s for 4 goals is pretty ordinary and I would love to see more crumbing forwards to help with that problem.

Lamb is a pretty angry character - could create some goals but giving away free kicks (3 last night) won't help
Wright looked lively but appeared to be further up the ground - could that change with Murph & Cripps in the team
Is Smith going to be better then either of these guys or are we better of with resting mids ie. Murphy, Gibbs, Graham or Kerridge (all who can kick goals).
Could we get Sumner fit and just play him forward? - he has kicked about a goal a game further up the ground
Any chance if Sheehan and Byrnes both come good that Touhy or Buckley plays forward - would be worth seeing?

Love the effort on Thursday night but Shane Watson needs to start earning his stripes (actually he probably needs to lose his stripes and become a Blue Bagger)

i'd love to see buckley up forward. Super fast & very aggressive tackler. How pumped would the team & crowd be with him kicking goals? reckon him kicking goals would be good for team spirit etc. a real "team lifting" kind of guy is Dylan, reckon he'd provide more than just a few goals, its that intangible ability to lift the crowd/team mates by his actions.

Didn't see shandog cheering Graham on at the VFL with us last year, just sayin'

Has been said by some since '13.

Yep, some of us have been pumping up his tyres for a while.

And for the record, some of us have been keen on Whiley despite his form last year. Bloke has tools.

TBH like Dylan back. Touhy on the other hand, would be a consistent threat from around 60 out.

Reckon we did very well in the middle.

Krooz was Krooz, Gibbs was very slick by hand, Graham was the link up runner.

Honestly the Centre worked well for me tonight.

The other guy, Phillips, got to a lot of boundary throw ins, got his hand to the pill, kept palming it back towards the boundary.

Did some nice stuff around the ground, but tired early.

By the end of next year that hole will be filled by Weitering with 30 odd games to his name.

One thing I did notice from the game is something the player were told not to do last year.

Under Malthouse, it was "play the percentages", "play it safe" etc. basically discouraging the players to back themselves. This is why we went boundary and just kick to contests.

Thursday game showcased the players backing their skills. I saw Daisy, Touhy, Gibbs, Simpson, Kerridge, Byrne, Graham and many others take the high risk high reward option on Thursday.

Sure, some, if not most didn't come off, but you don't go from timid to showoff overnight.

But the foundation is being poured.

THIS!
Refreshing wasn't it, sure they'll turn it over a bit at times, but if the message is keep backing yourself, then the execution will improve over the coarse of the season.

Can only nominate one rookie this season, so it's between Byrne and Sheehan you'd think.

The whole reason why Tuohy gets the opportunities is because of how he runs from defence, whereas Dylan can crumb and lead well. Would prefer Buckley out of the two, but that relies on Byrne taking over his role.

We don't know the go with Sumner yet and I bet we didn't allow for not having any players on the LTI leading into the season.........that doesn't happen.

Keen to see how Gowers goes also. Had a fair pre-season and looked better than just someone making up numbers.

I agree with all of that, and then would probably look at Gallucci as well. I have been pushing the Gowers barrow since we selected him, with plenty of mug punters last year calling for his head mid-season ahead of Fields and Walsh.

That said, he's got an extremely slim chance of getting a look in before mid-season, and given no overlap between AFL/VFL practice games and a short run into the season proper from here on as well as 8+ new names in the hat for senior selection, it's understandable that he falls by the wayside for now.

Watched the first half again this morning and I was very impressed just how much Kerridge and Whiley wanted to impress.
Lots of terrific work around the contest and rarely let the pressure release.

Really enjoyed the Kerridge extraction and one of Whiley's clearances. You'd think they may have got plenty out of this hit-out.

Who would have done that? Walsh never looked up to it and as good as Fields' kicking was, he was a limited player with an in-between height.

The longer the pre-season went the better that Gowers looked. Getting elevated isn't something we do as readily these days, though.

I was one of those mug punters. Walsh and Fields were both elevated for games, both with monster kicks - I think Fields sent one well beyond the centre at Etihad one day. Was genuinely surprised when they were cut until I finally - finally - understood that persevering with maybies and hopefuls was no longer the standard at Carlton. A shock but ultimately the bullet we had to bite to move forward in a deliberate, focussed way. Gowing has given me no more reason for confidence than those 2 blokes. What do I know?

Hey, Blueseum doesn't lie!

"...but Walsh provided one of the few highlights for the sparse crowd when he kicked his first career goal with a long bomb midway through the third quarter".

I must have grouped him in with Fields, Rainbow and someone else.

My only concern with that is lets not forget Dyl Bucks is actually still very young and raw...he's only played a handful of games and only had his 'breakout' year last year in trying circumstances.

He's still finding his feet as an AFL player and shown some promising signs in defence...suddenly turning him into a forward may not be an easy transition for him and he may lose confidence/lose his place in the senior side.

Having said that i think he does have the attributes to be a pretty good small forward..we've seen him kick some nice goals in the past.
