Can you explain to everyone why we have only got 5 picks?

Sure. Off the list 7 players Croad, Brown, Dowler, Hooper, Muston Taylor and Tuck. On the list after Trade week 2 players, Hale and Cheney. Nett result (assuming Bateman goes onto vets' list) is 5 vacancies on the main list.
All the other delistings were from the rookie list.
The Hawthorn website also states that we have picks 19,37,54,66 and 88 in the draft after the delistings.
Some may be used for rookie elevations or NSW scholarship holders but unless we delist further players we only have 5 picks.

Hey boys, great read so far! Would love us to snag a quick forward either Lamb or Harper, if not I reckon Pitt would be a steal at pick 19 if still available. I think we need to target a quick outside player and take the best available I'm sure there will be a quality one there at pick 19!

Just throwing out the idea of drafting Travis Johnstone as a mature rookie? looks as if he has been delisted by Brisbane, reckon we could use an outsider runners with his pace and skill for 2 years.. would be well worth the risk alah stewie dew 2008 perhaps?

TJ was the most harshly treated player in Queensland this year. Vossy does not like him. Not without weaknesses but I would say he would have played every game this year (he was fit for) if there was any fairness or logic to Brisbane's selection policy. Was a looooong way from the worst at the Lions this year. In saying that, I'm not sure he is a good fit for us. Good foot skills but not so much better than Birchall and not as quick (but just as one sided).

Over the past two years, we've lost Stuart Dew, Mark Williams, Rhan Hooper, Carl Peterson and Cameron Stokes, So I think it's important that we get a small forward. However, we must use our first pick on a key defender.

I'm sure Stewie will be flattered you called him a 'small' forward ;)

Well you said we have 5 picks after the delists and Bateman hasn't gone to the Veterans list yet. So we could end up with 6. Nice Counting :D

Croad was a veteran so we delisted 6 from the main list and a vet. If we don't put Changa on the vets list we would only have 4 picks in the ND and an extra pick in the rookie draft. The fact that the HFC website said we would have 5 picks in the ND led me to assume they were planning to put Changa on the vets list. I don't think we will end up with 6 picks unless we delist someone else. Hope I have explained this clearly.

Ok I understand now! :thumbsu::)

Pick 19: Looking at the three players that could play HBF or HFF with potential to be a mid in the future AKA Goo, Osbourne and Ladson getting older and hopefully if we start investing now we could get ourselves a suitable replacement.

Jed Lamb – Gippsland Power / 181cm / 78kg :thumbsu:

Jayden Pitt – Oakleigh / 187cm / 70kg

Isaac Smith – North Ballarat/ 189cm / 80kg

Pick 37: Once again replacement players here that could fill a spot in years to come Seb Tape getting more and more exposure ATM could see him going a lot higher

Jamie Cripps – East Frem /182cm / 78kg

Aaron Young – Eastern Ranges / 188cm / 76kg

Sebastian Tape – Glenelg / 191cm / 85kg :thumbsu:

Pick 54: Obvoiusly will come to who is left but IMO these are the best at this selection, unless we see a big slider.

Ariel Steinberg – Bendigo / 191cm / 84kg :thumbsu: Highly doubtful to last this long

Cameron Delaney – Geelong Falcons /193cm / 74kg

Nathan Batley – Woodville / 185cm / 74kg

From what has been mentioned we will use 5 picks, so no PSD.
Looking for pace so would expect our first pick to be someone who gets it, carries it and kicks it well.
After that it would be who we rate in talent order, you would expect a speculative ruckman amongst those 5 picks and a defender.....but wouldn't be surprised if we looked for quick footed outside speedstars.

I agree TM,

For mine pace, ability to carry and deliver are a must for our first pick.

In that catagory for the 19th selection the three standouts that should go very close to our first pick are:

Jed Lamb (VIC): A massive chance if he is still available at 19, smashed the kick test and shows class with the football. Quick Forward with some neat tricks and can finish off like a dream. He's quick and could fill a forward role. Losing Peterson, Hooper has raised his stocks and he stands a very good chance he will the first player drafted for us.

Isaac Smith (VIC): Amazing pace although a little older then some of the other draft picks 21-22. Could come straight into the side if given the right role. Nice kick and can spot up targets well. Handy shot on goal like Lamb and would benefit from a HFF type role and with Chance Bateman a year older and Crawford gone he would be a good fit for a midfield role later in his career.

Jayden Pitt (VIC): This guy oozes class and has a good tank although he's considered somewhat of an unknown quality. Most spotters have labelled him as massive potential although he has had a couple of injuries that have limited his ability. Mostly an outside mid with great skills. Can also kick a nice goal. The hawthorn recruiters may be aprehensive to take the plunge with a couple of failed picks with injured players in the past.

No 19- ( Midfield/ forward ) Kerian Harper or Jed Lamb

No 37- ( Key defender ) Angus Lithiland or Seb Tape

No 54- ( Medium defender ) Blayne Wilson or Jake Batchelor

No 66- ( Small forward ) Matthew Rankine or Sam Crocker

No 88- ( Tall forward ) Cameron O'Shea or Alex Johnson

Good post, although I think Lamb, Green, Reid, Rankine are too small for my liking. Really like the look of Tape at Pick 19 (hoping Atley will slide but highly doubt it)
Crawf was only 174cm,he was not half bad.Brent Harvey i think is 172cm.We need pace and more pace.

Cindy was bigger than that... I'm 181cm and he was slightly taller than me.

I'd take Seb Tape or Matthew Watson at 19 if they are still around and then go for the quickest buggers we can find for the rest.
I am 179cm and have met Crawf and definitly was shorter than me.

I want pace and some more,
Pick 19,Sam Crocker,Brad Harvey
,Keiran Harper,Anthony Kyanga
Pick 37,Cameron Johnston,David Kruse,Dion Prestia,Matthew Rankine,Luke Dalhaus,Jordan Eades,Isaac Smith
Pick 54,Nathan Batley,Alex Browne,Jamie Cripps,Aaron Mullet,Max Otten,Luke Parker,Rhyce Cooyou,Rowan Garlett,Riley Heddles,Kevin Lawerence,Dean McDonald,Kirk Ugle.
Pick 66,Warrick Andreoli,Jake Batchelor,Caleb Shadbolt,Ozgur Uysal,Myles Sewell
Please this is only my opinion and i am sure the club will have a better idea then me.But bring on the pace.

Well, I'm 173cm and Crawf was definitely taller than me so make of that what you will.

The interesting thing for me is what the Hawks will do with the final two picks (66 and 88). Historically it has been shown that the late picks are long shots and most selections do not have a significant AFL career.
Of all the older players at the club we do not have one player on the list who was picked later than 48 (Bateman) in the National Draft. The only players taken later than that were Lowden and savage (both bottom age),Lisle, Williams and Duryea so the jury is still out on them. However Lowden and Savage would have been taken much earlier one year later.
So in a compromised draft will we use the later picks on rookie elevations, mature age state league players, recycled AFL players or long shot 18 year olds?
I can hardly wait for National Draft day.

Sewell, Gilham and Young were all taken in the rookie draft and Guerra in the PSD which is after pick 48 in the National draft.

Osborne and Campbell were also both rookie elevations but I was referring only to the National Draft which is clearly stated in the thread topic. I agree that we have unearthed a few good rookies but again a pretty low percentage whereas Nathan Thompson was the last late National Draft pick I can recall making a lasting impression with the Hawks.
With regard to Gilham and Guerra, both were recycled footballers not young draftees which was one of my points. Gilham was originally picked by PAP at around pick 16 and I will check on Guerra but I suspect it was lower than 48. Note Guerra was picked By PAP at 28 in 1999.

To my mind Jed Lamb seems the best pick-up for us as we seem to lack his type of player. I reckon what we are lacking is a quick half-forward flank who can get the ball and either pass it to Buddy or Rough on a lead, bomb it long to the square or have a shot from fifty.

Although I'm just going by what I am hearing on Big Footy Jed Lamb seems to fit this bill and could possibly be ready to go from round 1 next year. If so we should pick him up.

Its interesting that despite the calls for a big defender (which are possibly justified) it is this sort of player that we need the most. Having an attacking HFF flank will make us especially dangerous.

So Lamb at 19 and then hopefully a running half back flank such as Tape at 37 (although it would have to be someone of this type as Tape will go a fair bit higher).

Let's play 'Guess his height'.

Correct!

Incorrect!

ArmaHawk I think we have arguably the best HFF of all time on our list in Buddy. I want to see Buddy on the HFF (with a licence to roam); Schoey at CHF in a lead up role; and, Roughy playing out of the Goal Square.

So, I want us to chase Issac Smith / Seb Tape kind of guys to play CHB / HBF roles.

I think we have done well to replace some of our players previously lost:

C. Brown - K Cheney - both tough at the ball and good at the hard contest

N. Thompson, S Boyle - Tall forward that can pinch hit in the ruck

Obviously still some players missing:

CHB: Croad - Seb Tape: Big strong backmen that can handle the power forwards???

HFF x 2? No Hooper and No Peterson - Issac Smith, Jayden Pitt, Lamb ?

MID x 2 Bateman 30, Crawf gone - ??

The question is who is more important to us?

We've got WhiteX who could settle into the HFF role, we also have Breust who was more than half-decent for BHH. So I still say a KPD is more needed than a HFF.
