Legit haven’t seen this much conjecture over a team nickname since 1985 when we were trying to name our under-12s indoor cricket team at Brahma Lodge ICA, fierce debate raged for weeks at recess and lunch until Black Knights eventually won out over Vampires, Bounty Hunters, Salisbury Park Sloggers (coach’s choice), Scanlen’s All-Stars, The ICA-Team and Poojabbers*...

Port Adelaide
Nickname: Ports
4-letter abbreviation: PORT (not P.Ad)
3-letter abbreviation: PTA
2-letter abbreviation: PA
So after a bad financial result.

Without getting into the fine detail, most name changes were either a long time ago early in the life of the clubs involved or as part of a relocation/re-branding. It hasn't happened since the Lions. I agree with the strategy of dropping the Power all together and go with Port Adelaide for a few years (10+). Then we can come up with a new nickname if needed.
Drop the Power and we would most probably still be called Power. I don't think the "Power" chant would go away, for instance.

There was no conjecture in picking names when we played (about the same era but somewhat older) at the same venue.

Porkys 8 was our mixed side name. The bloke who put the side together had a nickname of Piggy at the footy club.

When the women decided to have their own side we named them Octopussies.

My childhood indoor cricket team was called the Mountin' Goats.

I was the only one that found it funny.

Everybody either overtly or secretly wants to support the Port Adelaide Pirates and if we were called the Pirates there'd be no call to change because it's a great moniker.

I don’t mind Power as a nickname, I can’t see how a change from power to pirates or sharks would make any difference other than more confusion.

The reality is the nicknames in AFL and footy in general seem to be mandatory but I’m not sure why they’re necessary.

Get us in the bars and we are Port Adelaide and that is all that matters.

Problem with this nickname is everyone would start calling us the Port Butt Pirates

What about all the posters who’ll have to rebrand?!

Quick Summary of Logos

(name plus nickname - 8)
ADELAIDE CROWS
BRISBANE LIONS
FREMANTLE DOCKERS - EST 1994 - moniker of their nickname
GEELONG CATS
GC SUNS
SYDNEY SWANS
WEST COAST EAGLES
WESTERN BULLDOGS

(name only - picture of nickname - 5)
MELBOURNE - moniker
COLLINGWOOD - 1882 - magpie picture
ESSENDON - bomber picture
NORTH MELBOURNE - kangaroo picture
RICHMOND - hard to read est year - tiger picture

(nickname only - 3)
GIANTS
HAWKS
POWER

(no name and no nickname - 1)
CFC moniker - some really hard to read est year - some latin

(kind of their name but really all about chicken - 1)
SAINT K.F.C. - some latin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think we have 2 choices:
1 - go with the "modern" way that interstate clubs and Geelong and Bulldogs have gone - i.e. PORT ADELAIDE POWER
2 - go with the way old vic clubs do it - PORT ADELAIDE - optional Est year - image of nickname

My preference is 2.
i.e. PORT ADELAIDE - Est 1870 - image of wharf pylons with teal water under OR the PAFC moniker

Other notes:
- Collingwood use gold in their logo
- Brisbane and Richmond use white writing - not one of their colours
- North Melbourne put strong emphasis on the North - the Melbourne is smaller
- most logos are round or badge (shield) shaped

Port Adelaide
Image or PAFC Moniker (or both - PAFC moniker foreground - wharf pylons and teal water background)
Est 1870
(circular or shield shaped)

Does anyone with some skill have time to make this up properly?

Not if it is a massive improvement.

Fitzroy went from Maroons to Gorillas to Lions
Brisbane went from Bears to Lions
Hawthorn went from Mayblooms to Hawks
Melbourne went from Fuchsias to Demons
Essendon went from Same Olds to Bombers.
Geelong went from Pivotonians to Seagulls to Cats.
North Melbourne from Shinboners to Kangaroos
South Melbourne from Southerners to Bloods to Swans

Footscray had 4 or 5 nicknames before settling on Bulldogs within its first decade in the VFL.

Carlton after WWII toyed around with changing its nickname to Cockatoos. Smart move not to change.

We have been known as Cockledivers -> Seasiders -> Magentas -> Magpies -> Power, so another nickname wont kill us, but if we change it, it better be a fu**ing good change.

My preference is to drop the nickname all together.

Yes, I'm happy with just 'Ports'.
Or Port Adelaide if people insist.
