For all the guff about how poor SA’s attack is, there is a member of it that at one point had over 50 test wickets at a strike rate of 30, making him one of the lowest in the history of the sport; he just happened to be stuck behind a bunch of other players who weren’t going anywhere.

Even now it’s 35.
They've bowled well this morning.

Feels a bit like this Ravindra has come out of nowhere.

I know he's had some ODI form recently, but a look at his 2nd level stats don't give much excitement. Since going to the international stage he's leapt up several levels, which is fantastic for NZ as they need a bit of youth talent coming through as a somewhat aging side.

From what I remember, Olivier burst onto the scene & cleaned up with plenty of wickets at the beginning of his test career...But then like many other South Africans, he signed a county Kolpak deal & gave up international cricket when he was becoming a permanent fixture in the bowling line up...Also said at that time he had aspirations to qualify & play for England...When those Kolpak deals ended he had obviously fell down the pecking order when being eligible again.

He's been in the limited overs teams for a few years, him and Finn Allen have been marked as the best prospects for a while. He really broke out in the world cup of course, but had been improving in domestic cricket too.

Really? That’s your response to this? That’s fairly harsh.

All I see is a side shorn of basically probably its best 10-12 bowlers at least, keeping what is at WORST, a good-to-very-good batting line up on home turf to a pretty regularly seen first innings score

This isn’t 3-550 declared. A few minutes ago it was 8-470 and for the first four and a half sessions it was a real slog getting there and for the two guys who scored all the runs, there were chances and edges a lot of the way through it.

Cricket fans are very quick to remove ANY context from what they are watching.

Don't know whether I'd rather see SA put up a fight with this underdog team, or to get absolutely humiliated as a bit of an f you to the SA board

The f-you to the SA board unfortunately means the 11 guys on the field, whose fault this isn’t, get utterly humiliated on a personal level so that’s the problem with wanting that.

I get your point but the issue with all of this is their board NEEDS money. It’s poor like the WICB and the other poor cricket boards as well. It’s just that people don’t really associate it with being poor, because for most of the lifetimes of cricket fans, it’s been one of the best teams on the planet. We associate strong results with a powerful cricket nation.

So I can sympathise with them kicking this tournament off and seeing it as a chance to kick start a new financial opportunity and then going ‘ok to make this work we need to have our superstars: what do we do about the tour to NZ?’ And this is what you end up with

A huge batting failure would be way worse for SA IMO because the conditions really aren’t tough, the likes of Henry and Santner aren’t world beaters - Jamieson and Southee are legitimately decent yes - and the side SA has picked DOES contain some hardened FC veterans with the bat as well as a guy like Petersen with some test pedigree.
