New Zealand v South Africa (2 Tests)

Williamson has cashed in big time here against a virtual 2nd XI.

The bowling isn’t second XI. It’s below that you’d have to think. Olivier was once a superstar in the making but for reasons even he can’t explain based on articles I’ve read, his pace has just completely deserted him and while Paterson made a couple of test appearances he isn’t really test class and the rest of the attack are not near it either.

The batting has some credentials. Bedingham and Petersen have claims at being in a first XI and are legitimately playing for spots in their next team. A couple of the other batsmen have legitimately decent first class records over a long period and could force their way into what is a rebuilding batting order with a decent score or two over the next three knocks.

The bowlers are really not playing for much: SA’s attack is too strong when at full strength and even then it has a surplus already with Rabada, Ngidi, Jansen, Nortje, Coetzee and Burger when they are all fit, and that’s without any potential spinner being considered - and as admirably as Neil Brand has bowled in this game, he’s a batsman and his first innings six-for was his maiden first class five wicket haul

SA hasn't actually bowled that badly. KW was dropped in both innings (1st innings was a tough chance, 2nd one routine) and I'm pretty sure Ravindra was too before he reached 100.

Brand got wickets when NZ were slogging.

Thought their batting was terrible, maybe they can do a bit better today.

2/8 after 5 overs oooof. Agree SA bowled quite well.the wicket is a 350 to 400 wicket an the poor bowlers had to back up after a first innings slog. they look like getting out each ball.

The surplus isn't playing against NZ. That's why it's not even a second XI SA team.

I'm impressed with the strength of the NZ test side given the ravaged look of other international teams, big 3 excluded.

It’s possible but they’ve sold out from what I’ve heard the first 3 days of both tests against the Aussies so the interest in that series is huge so anything really from this series is just surplus

I dunno I guess if it was the Windies I’d probably want them to pile on the pain in the rare instance they got the chance to do it but I think it’s just silly cricket. Not gutless or anything - I don’t think there’s any element of ‘putting the game beyond reach’ as it clearly already is, but it’s just not doing anything

You're not wrong with this...The Wellington test is completely sold out (no 5th day ticket sales) & Christchurch is very close to being for the first 3 days...The ground capacity was a bit smaller than what I thought;

Basin Reserve - 6,400
Hagley Oval - 8,000

Definitely serious interest after a 8 year wait.

Not much fortune for Fortuin with that dismissal.

If you hit the ball in the air at a fielder you take the risk of getting caught by them or it bouncing off them for a rebound catch

It was unlucky but if he hit the ball on the ground or over the fielder he wouldn't have been caught so he really only has himself to blame.

Plugger the fielder was a meter from the pitch. He doesn’t have himself to blame. The ball was literally hit down. It bounced off a full length leg guard that was protruding above the fielder’s knee.

It makes no difference in the context of the game but it flat out shouldn’t be allowed.

You can only beat what you are up against. So NZ have done what they had to do, Ravindra and Williamson obviously batted well, their bowlers have generally been good.

But you’re playing Australia soon, you want to get ready for that so you’re going to want some decent competition and I still think they’ve missed a trick: if the opposition can’t test you, you test yourself and as the game has gone on and petered out aside from a couple of hours here and there today, I think they missed their chance to test themselves by bowling again.

They’ll walk away from this game with really nothing more than Ravindra’s time in the middle as a particularly major boost IMO

Australia just lost a test to the Windies. It's difficult to form an argument that we have more to take away from this Summer than NZ.

Ravindra going big should worry Australia. I'm a fan.

Oh I don’t disagree.

I just think NZ have two chances to try and get ready for what should be a good hard series and a good chance to maybe spring a minor upset, but those opportunities are going to depend heavily on SA themselves playing well above themselves - which they really haven’t.

As such NZ to me needed to be proactive enough to try and set some sort of a challenge and I think they took a pretty easy way out.

Even at the end I thought watching Jamieson: ‘youve just seen (or should have seen if you watch cricket) an Australian summer dominated by poor tail end bowling and you are running in with 4 wickets to your name trying to bounce out your opposition, wtf are you doing?’

Maybe Henry’s first innings bowling was a plus if I was looking for something??

In the past two weeks, we've seen the best advertisements for test cricket with the Australia vs Windies and India vs England tests, and the worst with this one.

It wasn't the biggest margin of all time, but the whole situation is just completely farcical.
