After his two years with us in 05/06, I'm pretty sure Pyke left to pursue business opportunities in WA. He's just gone back into coaching in the last 18 months with the Eagles.

Obviously plenty of other factors but pretty incredible results in his two stints.

On face value it seems he's chosen not to stay in the coaching game for long enough to be considered for a senior coaching position (until now perhaps).

Hard to judge SOS. GWS had so many 1st round picks that even a moron could have built a half decent list.

Anyway, even if he is a top notch operator Carlton need to get their act together and collectively get on the same page about where they're headed first.

Walsh was an exception.

Very few assistants stay assistants by choice.

The reason they remain assistants are varied. Some are bad learners, others can't comprehend the complexity of being head coach, wheras some simply can't handle the pressure. I'm not suggesting these are the only reasons.

However, those that assume simply because someone has served a long adjective, or have been an assistant in particular programs, that they would make a good head coach, are sorely mistaken.

Don Pyke is starting to loom large on my radar. Obviously Worsfold is my personal choice, however if he really doesn't want the job, having him at the club in 2016 in the same role he is currently in now would work wonders.

Next in line I'd personally go for Brett Ratten. He has a rubbish list with the Blues and still believe he has a lot to offer, considering he has spent the last what, 3-4 seasons under Clarkson

I think too many people think the answer is trying to buy into the Hawthorn way, just as we all made the mistake a few years ago by trying to buy into "Geelong way".

Yep, but that's often the problem you get when you hire an assistant who's only coached at 1 club under 1 head coach. They only know 1 way of doing things, so they bring that to the new club and try to emulate it, which doesn't usually work. Now whether that applies to Bolton and Dew and those likes, that'd be for the panel to decide.

The beauty of Walsh was he was obviously hugely experienced, but had worked at multiple clubs with multiple coaches and had developed his own style and ideas from that. Plus add in the ability to handle all the other things that come with being a head coach and you can see why it can be hard to find a good coach.

This is what makes me like Bassett the best in that he's run his own team and developed his own gameplan already, albeit at SANFL level. He obviously comes with his own flaws however.

We seem to have done that with Wigg. Left footer too which the Hawks love.

We had an elite recruiter, unfortunately we sacked him over a misunderstanding which supposedly tarnished the club while the club went on to retain and support a CEO who categorically trashed the place.

Ogilve seems to go ok. Would still prefer to have both though. I just hope from now on we place an absolute paramount of kicking ability.

That's the selectors fault, they've fallen into old habits now that Walsh isn't there to over rule them.

Then our match day selection committee should come under heavy scrutiny. Especially when he was playing well before injuring himself in the bye break, and hasn't had a look in since.

Maybe we need to pick enough players who are good kicks to force the hand of the match day selection committee? That'll **** 'em!

This is what'll shit me about the VB in. He'll get recalled after 2 average games and 1 good one, yet Grigg has played well in every SANFL game since his return from injury and he probably won't get a look in again.

I'd love Woosha for 2 years then basset to take over. That or Pyke with Woosha as the Director of Coaching similar to rocket at the pies last year. Either way, love to have johnny on board for the foreseeable future.

Every club has players that struggle for periods, but just blindly backing them in because they're seniors doesn't help anyone.
