Sad! He couldn't match Chris Judd Brownlow in third year.

He projecting not to be the goat
That's why taking a binary view of winning and not winning these awards is for simpletons.

Judd polled 30 votes in his Brownlow year to win it; Daicos polled 38 votes in his 3rd year and didn't win it.

Daicos has 77 votes after his first 3 seasons, Judd had 41....

I really wouldn't get hung up about Brownlows and votes etc. Does it really matter?

We all know Daicos can play. Look at Bontempelli - one of the best players in the game - no Brownlow.

Yeah, I reckon you'd be hard pressed to leave Bunton, Reynolds and Ablett Jr out of any Top 10 GOAT list...

If I had time I could squeeze in some more Im sure. I could find a few defenders Im sure: Langford, Scarlett, Silvagni, then rucks like Cox and Gawn.

The game is littered with great players who werent recognised at the time.

I just think when ranking and assessing players, the one big aspect is this:

1. If available, look at their stats.
2. Use your eyes.
3. Impact in games.

These are for at least the 3 criteria I go on when forming my own opinion about ranking/assessing players. I do the same for cricket too.

In time, Nick Daicos will be ranked/assessed. Brownlow votes accumulated is one way (but a very small aspect) of assessing him.

Best to look at his impact on games and everyone will assess that aspect (impact) differently.

All comes down to opinion.

You left out Lockett and Coleman.

But my point stands - Bunton, Reynolds and Ablett Jr are all comfortably Top 10 all timers.

I agree with you.

But Dunstall won one and big Mason, whilst a match winner on his day, doesn't really belong in this company;)

I left out heaps. Bont will likely be finishing his career top 20.

And any list is subjective. And as I showed, you can easily find names of greatest of the greats who didnt win Brownlows.

I've always maintained the Brownlow is the best award out of the 3 imo, and while obviously it went Cripps way last night I've never understood the sooking about the award being a midfielders award.

Midfielders are the best footballers in a footy team 98% of the time and even if they aren't - sometimes a KPF or KPD may be better - they are always the more consistent of the stars in a footy team. Rightly or wrongly the umps reward this with their votes.

Curnow may well be out most talented player, but he's never going to be the most consistent due to the position he plays. He's got blokes hanging off him every single game. Midfielders occasionally get tagged, but most of the time they're allowed to run free and get the ball in space which a key forward or key back often does not.

Anyway a good season by Nicky. Beaten on the night by Crippa, but the real losers this year are Bont and Heeney who imo are the 'best' players in the game on their day but weren't rewarded.

Hopefully Heeney wins the flag and norm. A deserving winner he would be. Bont clearly pissed in an umps cornflakes or something.

It would be a paper excercise, but the ‘rest’ eg bnb winners multi premiership winners, even if they aren’t allowed actual defenders to be fair to the Brownlow bunch
Dunstall Carey matthews Pavlich silvagni off the top of my head

Jeez. I actually agree with you on nearly all of that.

Yeah it's become more and more a midfielders game. The best players who have the biggest influence on most games play in the midfield - it's why they dominate all awards and not just the Brownlow. I thought Heeney was the best player this year, but the nature of a 3-2-1 voting system means that being one of three mids who take it in turns dominating means that he can play a better game than Nick or Patty and only get 1 vote where they get 3 because they're far and away the dominant eye catching mid on their team. The one part where I disagree is that despite Bont being so sublime and complete, I didn't think he was a chance this year. In the Doggies games I watched, there was only a few where I thought he was in the best 3 players on the ground. Absolutely sublime player, but not the inside ball hunter that Cripps is or the runner that Nick is - so not as consistently influential as they are, because he's a tad more stoppable.
