Go home factor baffles me. Feels like it's an Australian thing.

Has there ever been a go home issue with NBA/MLB/NFL players? And those player can be traded mid season and have to move straight away.
Such a soft AFL thing.
Feels like it’s one of the few if only professional sport to have homesickness.

Imagine an Aussie playing round ball football. Only chance to make it big is Europe.

AFLPA have too much say in this.

Not in the pro leagues but there is quite a bit in college football with the changes to the transfer portal over the last couple of years. I always think the argument of they don't in American sport is stupid for 2 reasons: money and college.

A first overall pick in the NFL draft will make more money over his rookie contract than a superstar of the AFL will make in their lifetime. For example, Bryce Young went number 1 overall in this years NFL draft and signed a 4 year rookie contract worth $41m (USD) which includes a $27m signing bonus. Even the average wage of an NFL player is somewhere around $1m-$2m ($1.5-$3m AUD). Compare that to AFL where the average wage is ~$400k. Being paid millions of dollars a year is enough to overcome homesickness.

The players also move away from home for a minimum of 3 years for college before being drafted anyway so they have that time to grow and get over any homesickness issues.

The only way you can compare it to other sports is to look at a league that also has a draft and a similar wage structure. I am unfamiliar of any such league.
Honestly, as much as I love AFL, wouldn’t tell any of the youngsters to strive to be AFL players due to the shocking pay gap. It’s so badly compensated. AFL have a major bargaining agreement with Channel 7, with average crowd of 40-50k every week. Yet half of the team’s list probably get 100-300k if that.

Go play NBA, where a guaranteed rookie contract is 7 million- which Dyson Daniels has.

It might be different in the NFL if 30 of the teams were in Alabama.

I love that you used Alabama for your example. Very fitting.

One of the things that amuses me most about this site is how often the Vics accuse the non-Vics of being insular and parochial while simultaneously:

- admitting they don't care about any match ups that happen outside Victoria and accusing non-Vics of being insular and parochial for suggesting maybe they should

- defending that the GF should remain in Victoria and accusing non-Vics of being insular and parochial for suggesting otherwise

- defending that the 'national' AFL media focuses on Victoria and accusing non-Vics of being insular and parochial for complaining that it shouldn't

- defending that night games interstate should start unreasonably early for local fans in order to be convenient for Vic fans to watch on tv, and accusing non-Vics of being insular and parochial for suggesting otherwise

- not to mention the cognitive dissonance in their claims that interstate clubs only get good crowds because there's nothing else to do while simultaneously holding the belief that Victoria has an obsessive footy culture that non-Vics couldn't possibly understand.

They somehow maintain this belief while:
  • defending that they won't show up if it's at a stadium 5km down the road instead of the MCG
  • defending that they won't show up if they're playing a non-Vic team, even though they're so not insular like the non-Vics
  • defending that they don't show up to games because they're so busy with the glorious nightlife of Victoria, while simultaneously claiming that interstate game need to start early because they couldn't possibly stay up past 9pm to watch games

Money should be going to the players, and the young ones.
I watch a lot of colts and WA rep games, much better to watch than the AFL professional version

I would add that if a highly rated WA kid hinted he didn’t want to leave WA, the VIC media reaction would be to demand something akin to a Royal Commission!🤦🏻‍♂️

I don't have any first hand evidence of it but my suspicion was that this was the case with Matthew Johnson.

Don't say anything other than their coffee is the best in the universe either.

Really? Wow haven’t heard anything about that. 🤷‍♂️

I am fairly arrogant in my opinion that he was a top five pick and when WC picked Chesser over him and he kept sliding... well. Questions are asked.

Not complaining. Not trying to bring too much attention to it.

Hawks were right into Johnno, they took Ward. Makes you wonder. I know the family and they are pretty close - not that that matters. Good for us I guess.

Yeah fair enough. I thought looking at his face and body language when he wasn’t picked up on the first night looked like someone who just wanted to be picked And was devastated he wasn’t. As you sa y certainly not complaining we got him,👍

WC should draft him and then in two years shop him around. That way they’ll have offers from all 10 Melbourne clubs instead of just the ones with draft capital this year. Could turn him into 2-3 very good players.
This doesn't make sense, they're better off getting great value for the pick this year. They need the talent coming in now, doing what you're suggesting keeps them where they are for longer.

Did you see Andrew Demitrious house on the news that got broken into the other night ?

Quite the mansion

Depends on if they traded him for picks in 2024/5 or players, JVR+ Rivers + late first round pick as an example would be better for their list than 2 first rounders this year.
FWIW, if they are chasing English and or Naughton, then Bulldogs probably end up with pick 1 this year anyway. With Croft coming in they have way too many talls on their list and a bont succession plan would be enticing.

I spent a few days in Melbourne last week and was totally underwhelmed by every coffee I bought there... :(

Had some spectacular dim sum though which made up for it somewhat :p
