The standard of footy in Tassie isn't anywhere near what it once was, and it is not a breeding groumd for footballers like it was once either.

A purely Tasmanian team will struggle. They'll need a lot of help, or risk being the next GCS.
I wasn't talking about now when i said they should of had a team i was talking 20 years ago when Tassie was a very good football state

Yeah, I know.

As you say, it was a good footy state once, but the quality and quantity of competition has been in steady decline for years, such it's now very average.

It's extremely difficult to see how they could form a 'native' team that'd be competitive, or survive financially with home crowds of 8 - 10,000.

It is not the fault of Tassie and they still deserve a team.

The AFL will eventually want to move to 20 teams no matter what

They will, but I think it's naive for Tassie to refuse a re-location off the bat.

There's just not the quality of footballer in the state to create their own team and be competitive. They'll need huge draft assistance, which will dilute the competition even more and leave the established clubs thinking twice.

Tassie also lacks the population to provide a viable income through memberships and the gate imo, and if so, they're going to provide further drain on the AFL purse.

It needs to be thought through / implemented carefully, if at all, or they could become a basket case.

Agreed but i want them to be one of the next 2 instead of a third WA/SA or a Canberra team

A local AFL club would revitalise it, more funding, an exclusive academy, allowing players to say in state.

It might, although an AFL club doesn't grow the population much.

The number of players capable of AFL that you'd keep in the state could be counted on one hand.

Without a re-location, the team would start at a very grass roots level and would have to be grown with draft picks. It'd be a slow, delicate process that could go awry very quickly if not managed properly.

Tasmania has a population greater than half a million, no problem from that side. It'd get the same concessions that GWS had gotten, it will be up to their management to use it properly.

The Tasmanian talent pool is probably the least utilised in the country right now. I wonder how many Tasmanians move interstate play in the 2nd tier comps, and how many more would play if there was a VFL team based in their state.

Tassie's population is widely dispersed outside the main population centres.

Game attendances won't be overly high imo.

The talent pool is shallow, and the quality of competition across all levels isn't great.

Even the country footy clubs are struggling, and there's a LOT of kids playing soccer.
