Who was/were the first club(s)?

....

On 29 August 1895 twenty-one clubs met at The George Hotel in Huddersfield and formed the Northern Rugby Union (later to become known as Rugby League). The clubs and their year of foundation were:

Batley 1880, Bradford 1863, Brighouse Rangers 1878, Broughton Rangers 1877, Dewsbury 1875, Halifax 1873, Huddersfield 1864, Hull 1865, Hunslet 1883, Leeds 1890, Leigh 1877, Liversedge 1877, Manningham 1876, Oldham 1876, Rochdale Hornets 1871, St Helens 1874, Tyldesley 1879, Wakefield Trinity 1873, Warrington 1875, Widnes 1873, Wigan 1879.

Dewsbury withdrew a few days later and were replaced by Runcorn (1876). Stockport was also accepted by telephone at the meeting at The George. The inaugural competition which the 22 founding clubs played for was called the Northern Rugby Football League (NRL).

Because they were seperate competitions regarded as seperate codes. Even Union fans will tell you when League started.

It is laughable that AFL fans who know zero about either code profess to be experts in both.
Why the f**k would I want to be an expert in Rugby League?

I am not disputing that many people (such as yourself) regard the "birth" of rugby league being in 1895, I am saying there is no distinction as a code until 1901 on and in effect they were all playing the same game till 1901 at the earliest. Show me the evidence that league existed in 1895 as a distinguished alternative to union (or non-league) as a seperate game. I'm talking the game not competitions. The AFL and SANFL are seperate competitions but they both play the same game.

NO ONE gives a **** about AFL!!! :p
"The AFL is the most attended professional sporting league in the country. The previous three AFL Premiership Seasons have had a total regular season attendance of over six million and the average attendance of over 36,000 is the second highest of any professional sports league in the world."

Yeah nobody gives a ****

Thanks

most seem to be around the Bradford-Leeds area. Is League stronger than soccer there?

What is the oldest in NSW/Qld.

Not sure if its stronger than Soccer but definately stronger than Union, its always been a sort of north/south split.

With regards to NSW/Qld, NSWRL foundation clubs were Balmain, Cumberland, Glebe, Newcastle (not the Knights), Newtown, North Sydney, South Sydney, Eastern Suburbs (now the Sydney Roosters), and Western Suburbs.

As for QARL/QRL/BRL foundation clubs i'm not sure. I'm pretty sure they included the likes of Toombul, Norths and Ipswich though.

so when everything's taken into consideration (time of telecast;the fact that lots of people go to one house on a saturday afternoon to watch afl grand final; bigger grand final crowd at afl), is it safe to say that the afl grand final was a massive winner?

just to get back on topic:D

Numerically challenged or brainwashed?

;)

you see, it might differ with my opinion otherwise...:D

but taking all those factors into account (the main one being time of telecast, and the fact the its far more likely that there were more big groups of people watching the afl gf together - and the fact that tv rating systems do not take that into account), i just think it was a win for the afl. just me is all.

aaaaaalways trust a left-leaning victorian over a new south welshman.

I understand why the RL people are standing up for the NRL on this forum, what I can't understand is they are bagging AFL on this forum.

Its a AFL forum!

Maybe you should look up Sarcasm in the dictionary!

Anways... Outside of VIC, SA, WA & TAS.. I'd be pretty right :p

I agree.

If you don't like AR why are you here? There are enough people who like both codes who can defend RL.

as i've said plenty of times....it's 1 of 3 reasons

1) they are trolls

2) the league unlimited board is as boring as batshit

3) the league unlimited board is fantastic, but the people there think they are f**kwits and they've been ostracized, and are seeking refuge on an AFL site's rugby league board

I actually think it's a combination of 1 and 2 for most of them.......... the league unlimited board can't be fantastic, or they wouldn't be here so often

Agreed. It is interesting to note how much better the best AFL forum is compared to the best NRL forum.

true, but 'league unlimited' is a big forum with heaps of posters and a ton of different topics talking about the sport they love......

but the liveliness of good old aussie rules based 'big footy' keeps drawing them back :p

I didnt watch a single game this year and that is a fact.

Don't worry. I believe you. As a Sydney-based AFL fan born and bred in NSW, I'm exactly the same. Never knew how boring League was until I saw my first close fought AR game. I don't even watch the SOO anymore.

oh yeah and this:

LMFAO

Even a person with a pea brain would even know there arnt as much rules in AFL as much as what RL has .

has to be the Bigfooty "sentence of the year". :D
