Like who? Their youth are by and large shit.

They have more players under 23 than Geelong, and more highly rated players in that age bracket than does Geelong.

They have 6 players aged under 23 who were taken with picks below 30 (JOM, O'Rourke, Burton, Lovell, Hartung, O'Brien) compared to the three Geelong has (Cockatoo, Thurlow, Lang).

The Hawks have three taken between 30 and 50 (Howe, Hardwick, Miles). Geelong has two, both in the 40s (Kolo, Gregson).

Hawthorn has three players taken at 50+ (Pittonet, Sicily, Brand). Geelong has five (Cunico, Gardner, Buzza, Hayball, Bews).

The Hawks have more top-level young talent than Geelong, with guys like JOM and O'Rourke. Geelong has fewer players in this age bracket and a much larger proportion were taken in later rounds.

and?

They just recruited JOM and paid a kings ransom to get him. Let's leave him aside

O'Rourke has hardly shown anything at Hawthorn. Nor has O'Brien and Burton. Lovell has two games experience and Miles has 0. Hartung is as soft as butter.
Brand looks good. Pittonet is really a stretch merely to make a case and Sicily is their Kersten type player.

Then there's the potatoes that have come through their ranks in recent seasons. Litherland, Langford and Schoenmakers come to mind.

Their youth ain't that flash, as we will find out when Hodge. Gibson and Burgoyne go at years end. Potatoes galore

LOL......O'Rourke huh....top level??......oookkk...

And if we took Omeara all you would talk about is his patella tendon....and with some justification.

Of the guys Hawthorn have drafted in the last 5 years and that are still remaining on their list as of now have played 180 games at AFL level. 50 of those are from Celgar.

In that same period our players have played 385 games. If you take away our two most played players Blicavs and Murdoch we'd still be in front on 225 games.

You would expect that, wouldn't you? In the last five years, the Hawks have won 3 premierships from 4 GFs. Geelong has been "rebuilding on the run" or "transitioning" or whatever buzzwords they like to trot out. You'd think that Geelong would have given significantly more games to younger players than Hawthorn.

Its not like we are short on key defenders.
Especially if Lonergan plays on.
Given the amount of players we need he would be a cheap option that has experience even Ricky Henderson would be worth a go, we have 3 good picks and the rest is rubbish picks, so use the rubbish picks on these guys to add backup bit like Delany and Blease, as next 2 drafts are going to be stronger then this one coming up.....

O'rourke is the Hawks biggest bust also GWS for a number 2 pick I think he went, lucky to be playing VFL...

Would it be worth having a go at Brown the west Coast defender

I presume he will go to collingwood with his wife having signed for their netball team.

Not sure thats a great recommendation. There would be 6 teams that have a lot better youth than us imo , probably more after the draft.

I'd be more curious as to why we care what Hawthorn are doing. Isn't the normal practice to emulate the premiers? Last I checked it wasn't them.

Correct and I'd also add that if your plan is to always emulate success you will rarely find it yourself.
I have no idea why this board has such a hardon for everything hawthorn.

You'd think so, but without fail teams think they need to copy whoever won the premiership. The fetish for big midfielders a couple of years ago is another example. The irony being the team being emulated - Fremantle - didn't win anything.

The last sentence could justify almost its own board.

Then why are you jerking off to thought of their alleged superior youth.

Bang on the money with O'Rourke and Hartung. Even my Hawk supporter mates agree with these comments.

We have been, that's why we only have about 2 players left from 2007.

That's only because we have just lost two. You can't ignore them yet as we havnt yet played without them.
Do you think Bartel played to an irreplaceable level?? There were talks all year questioning his position in the side. Cockatoo will easily go past him in our 22 on output and impact. Bartel was very average at times this year and just held his spot, that contribution won't be an issue to replace.

Enright is the only one who will leave a hole, and we have Thurlow coming straight in to replace him. We all know Thurlow will be a star, just a matter of it clicking this year so soon off a knee reco or whether it takes another year or two. We also have tuoey directly coming in. So our backline shouldn't be in too much strive.

Remember... Our forward line and midfield has absolutely no one 30 or over. We have plenty of improvement to come from our midfield and forward half. McCarthy Menzel Motlop( get his fat ass in shape) menegola Scott Selwood Joel Selwood can also get better and join Patrick on that level ( has zero pre season in 16).

The only line we have to make sure holds is the defense, the rest are in no trouble and will only get better

Pick 24 for a player who is straight into your top 5. Not bad.
Remember you guys are ******* shithouse.
Remember your station.
Remember you're a failure of a club.
:)

SO salty. Your mob is 2 years off a rebuild. Way to waste Dangerfield. :)

Can't have it both ways. They play their youngsters because they are top-line talent or they don't play them because they aren't good enough.

Meanwhile, we've been fairly competitive during that period too and our youngsters have forced their way into the team because they are good enough.
