I'd rather not have that restriction, and certainly no pick downgrade of any type on our first.
Our second round selection should of easily got that deal done.
As you said, clubs have no leverage with out of contract players right.
I know I'm definitely in the minority here, but I thought Smedts had talent and still had a chance to offer something. Dunno how he's gone at Carlton so far but I guess we'll see.
We're never going to agree here. I'm at peace with this trade.

The R1 isnt irrelevant, if we dont make finals its a pretty terrible trade.

Huge difference between a pick 10 and a pick 19/20.

We could be losing a player of Cocky's potential (pick 10) for a 27yo small defender and a pick 20 (far less promising).

The touhy trade reeks of desperation, like a few of our trades in the last few years.
Ifs and buts and candy and nuts. We'll make finals.
We picked up Parfitt this draft. Seems ok to me.

I will be a little frustrated (perhaps not frustrated but at least thinking "what if") - if we start playing layers in their preferred roles now. Murda forward, GHS in the MF etc. There are some that have left that could have benefitted from that as well - Smedts forward being one of them.

Where is Bews playing atm? Are we falling for the trap of trying to reinvent the wheel a bit too often? If we do then trade players out , its not likely that we will get value

You need to realise that the club clearly doesn't care one bit about trade value. I'm not sure what they're doing with Bews exactly. At a guess with the off season changes they see him as a depth player and if he can play forward he's more likely to provide good cover considering we've got some injury prone types up there. But they wouldn't have decided to do it based on trade value and if it hurts his trade value that clearly wouldn't phase them.

I have heard and seen him forward a little.
I actually think he plays the small defender role pretty well. And he even his Betts game he got the rough pineapple for the time he slipped over then the holding call where Betts kicked two goals.

That all said, IMO, hat harm could come from him getting some games as a small forward. He's string, quick, tackles hard, can kick prety well and has a good tank to chase.

Give it a spin I say. But where ever he plays, he needs a solid ( 8-10) games in that position to get a decent crack at it.

Id agree that they almost do not care about trade value , not to often have they stopped a trade based on lack of value. My point really was they are playing him forward , and im not sure that it will suit him as much as the free running role I see as his best role.
