On the same topic of trying to justify exactly why Thomas would be a shrewd pickup:

From the club who recruited Dan Hannebery, Jake Carlisle, Andrew Lovett, Lance Collard etc etc. 'Due diligence' is their forte! Not to mention the success which follows it.

The idea that any kind of due diligence could justify having Thomas on their list in 2025 is laughable.
They drafted Schoenmaker as well

Agree with he is a huge risk, but have anyone thought WHY we have to scrape the barrel for talent?
Brisbane beat smashed us and are flag favourites but get the best mid in the draft in Ashcroft for chump change.
Bulldogs beat us destroyed us earlier this year are second flag favourites but got JUH for free and get a bunch of Darcy's for bugger all in picks
Premiers Collingwood got two Daicos and Moore for chump picks.
Northern clubs get all the NGA's they want for free, we miss out on McKenzie.
North destroy their list on purpose and get multiple free dps.
WHAT DO WE GET? SFA and we have to look at TT or Clayton Oliver or get rid of Battle for an extra pick or talent like King or Rohan for two.
How do you feel as a Saints fan to know the AFL purposely allows the favoured clubs to get this top ten players for 2nd and third round picks AND also keep their first rounder?
They want us just to exist for TV rights. Kane and Dillon won't change this rort, they are allowing this to happen again this year.

So we are forced to look at Thomas or Oliver as we don't get free players like these other clubs.

Imagine seeing your club draft Billings, McCartin, Clark and Coffield over Bont, Petracca and Naughton and give Dan Hannebery’s corpse a 5 year deal, amongst a raft of other bad moves, and thinking that actually it’s not having a couple of F/S that keeps it stuck where it is…

Also they got two very good NGA players in Mitch Owens and Marcus Windhager literally the same year we got Darcy.

Gone for a splash in the Egyptian river?

TBF clubs like theirs and ours are in that gift-free zone that can mean they end up mid-table for years on end. As they have. To get out of the doldrums you need to do everything right (like nailing your top draft picks) and have a bit of luck (like having your 100 gamers produce lots of good footballers). We've had both and the Saints have had neither.

We ourselves moan about the things the money-hungry AFL does that work against equalisation, like the dream run that the northern clubs get with their academies, COLA etc. And the cushy draw and blockbuster fixtures that the big Vic clubs get year after year. So they make a valid point there.

We have been punching above our weight for a decade now. For one reason or another the Saints haven't been able to put a decent list together for about that same period. Some of it is due to circumstances beyond their control but as you say they have made a few embarrassingly poor list decisions over that period too.

We've shown it's possible.
They don't need charity. They just need to get themselves an imaginative coach and - above all - a top quality list manager and recruiter.

Their drafting has been far more miss than hit, even worse if not for getting free hits on Owens and Windhager. It’s not just the top picks that they’ve blown, although the Bont/Naughton whiffs hurt the most. It’s also stuff like taking Oscar Clavarino immediately before Harrison Petty and Nathan Murphy. Also trading the pick 10 that ended up being Kozzie Pickett, along with pick 23 the next year, to overpay Brad Hill. They tread water because they keep setting their draft capital on fire one way or another.

I imagine the Saints Disco is the cause of their father son issues….they probably have plenty of them running around but no way of proving it 😜

Missed out the part saying it was from Facebook (so not worth posting, at all), but the misery likes indicate lots of people there absolutely believe & agree with it when it’s nearly all lies & nonsense.

Nonsense!

Might help if they stopped seeing themselves as perennial victims, too.

Getting a massive Norf victim mentality vibe from over there, at least some of them admit they are shit & the club needs any help it can get.

Actually went there respectfully to provide some truths over JUH/Darcy etc not being “free”, but being an opposition fan is an instant target. Not wanting to get banned so I’ll leave them to soak in the decades of misery they are living in. Some very pathetic people on there.

Did laugh at that bloke absolutely throwing the toys out of the cot about the league being corrupt and other teams being cheats because of F/S and NGA and that’s why the Saints list is a shambles and they’re scraping the barrel for Tarryn Thomas, but all the examples (Jamarra, Ashcroft, Darcy, etc) were players that the Saints couldn’t have drafted anyway lol

The Saints would be in exactly the same position, except Jamarra would be at Adelaide and Darcy would be at GWS and they’d have two other players instead of Owens and Windhager.

A Saints supporter now claiming racism against TT and Saints are the only ones willing to rehabilitate him where as if he was white every club would give him another chance.
Is he missing all the chances North gave him and how many times he threw it back in their face?

Oh dear me

Saints are a worry. Norf has finally realised you don’t win premierships being mediocre middle and have bottomed out, although at the expense of other teams the way they did it.

Saints though keep having the odd year where they finish in the bottom part of the 8, only to bomb out the next year, rinse and repeat. They need to build a list from the draft and get some good talent in to develop and stop chasing and overpaying hacks.

Saints have had terrible recruiting. Blown heaps of draft picks picking the wrong players, have not seen high picks live up to their pick number, have wasted draft picks on washed up players who end up playing worse for them, than they did at their other club, often play boring and uninspiring football. But nah, its the fact their ex players are not shagging enough to produce FS picks for them is the issue shrugs

The sooner they stop making excuses and stop blaming others, the sooner they can accept they need to change within and actually DO get better.

There are two things that are true here. The father son rule is not a great rule for the evenness of the competition (though it literally does just come down to luck, which one could argue is the fairest thing of all), but it's also a fantastic rule for the enjoyment of the game.

If I was a Saints fan, I'd really dislike it, but only because it doesn't advantage the team I support. If Nick Riewoldt's boys end up being decent enough I don't think they'll be wishing the rule was abolished.

Haha want and had a read on the saints board Good Grief didn’t they get all worked up
Very bitter and angry over there. Still, we didn’t get Darcy and JUH for free, it cost us two drafts in capital.

Yep.

It's insincere to argue that access to Ugle-Hagan and Darcy hasn't been an advantage to us, as all academy and father-sons are - we've certainly been fortunate.

It's also insincere to argue that they came to us without any cost.

Nick lives in the USA now, so if they go down any sporting path it will probably be punting on gridiron

Agree. It's not like the good old days where Geelong snapped up Tom Hawkins for a 3rd rounder letting them keep their pick 7 for Joel Selwood, while 2-years later had to use our first rounder on Ayce Cordy. We also missed out on a couple, namely Ben and Sam Reid when the threshold increased from 50 to 100 games so it hasn't been all one-way traffic for us on the father son front. The lowering of the discount and updating the DVI points curve is a step in the right direction, although as per the Hawkins/Selwood example it can take 15+ years for the effects of an overly favourable system to unwind.
