Yeah
They can always package those picks up so you can go in with whats required
They have 5 list spots open already, then add in rioli, bolton and baker thats 8, but dont think they'll use that many at once. Maybe leave some for rookie, SSP and MSD
That's the Richmond view.

The Brisbane view may be that they only have 3 list spots available.
Therefore Richmond and Brisbane don't do the trade until draft day as you can have more picks than list spots on draft day only.

I agree with you that we need to value our first round picks higher (whether that's using them in the draft or using them as trade capital) and was against using it for a role player like Schultz who is on a vastly different level to the A-grader that Houston is even though their trade cost might end up similar.

But there seems to be some misnomer that we've traded out of the draft on the regular. Since 2017, we've only missed out on drafting a first rounder in 2019 and could also continue that trend if we trade our F1 into this year and use it in the draft whilst taking McGuane next year. Signing Perryman as FA also means we now effectively have a first rounder from 2016. We've obviously been lucky with the timing of our FS and NGAs, but the timing of these would also have factored into our planning for when to attack trades.

We definitely haven't been mortgaging our future. Our crop of under 23's don't have much exposed AFL form simply because we have been contending with such a good core of older established players. That can change quickly as we saw in mid-2021 to mid-2022 when we prioritised the kids and McCreery, Henry, Ginnivan burst onto the scene and instantly transformed our forwardline from the Mayne/Varcoe/Josh Thomas days.

I guess the language being spoken is we are looking to try do it regularly moving forward.

We have also wasted opportunities in past with over paying trades, trading out future picks early and receiving unders etc.
Overall weakening our draft hands in those years.

Thats a fair point. Will be interesting how lions manage that. Put some into the future?

Speaking of the old days … do we remember which pick we drafted Bucks, Anth, Clement and Licca at?

Or Scott Burns for that matter?
Scott Burns was a late pick in the draft I'm pretty sure.

I'd assume Anth and Licca were traded in the same way Bucks and Clement were.

We of course dont know but it’s all the word from recruiters and draft experts. But its why clubs want to get into this draft We havent seen a draft like this since 2017
I’m sure it potentially is deeper. But players like reef, macrae, DGB, tsatas, Reid, Hobbs, Jefferson etc were all talked up. Some just don’t kick on.

Either way for me, Houston or picks in the draft, it’s better than it looked a couple of months ago for us

I would understand the outcry on our list management if we were chasing 30+ year olds, but can we be serious for a minute?

Perryman is 26
Houston is 27

Both are in a position to give 5-6 years of service at a high level.

And to get Houston we're potentially giving:

Noble - 27
Richards - 24
A future first destined to be soaked up into Tom McGuane, who we'll get regardless.

This is the 'all or nothing' strategy people are complaining about?

Absolute nonsense.

Sides are trying to get into the top 15 with expected concessions. No one is trying to get into 15 to 40. Same as every year

I've not stated we shouldn't trade for Houston.

My argument is on general list building philosophy and trading out of too many drafts over a period of time with an old list and dearth of youthful high end talent coming through across the board.
We've not traded out of drafts though. Took a first and second rounder last year. Unless your criticisms go back pre 2023 (even then we hit the draft quite hard), in which case they are dismissed by the flag.

If you're on board with trading for Houston I'm not sure what your criticisms are. Is it only Schultz? Where we traded for a 24-25 year old who'll play with Nick for 7+ years. It's the Houston deal that will see us trade out of this/next draft for an older player. We traded our pick for Schultz but can get it back if we don't trade for Houston.

Had we not traded for Schultz I'm sure we'd be putting our first round and F1 on the table for Houston anyway, having the younger Schultz as well is a better outcome.

I thought you were pushing for an alternative list building approach, ie. that we should have cut older players and tanked for a couple of years to hit the draft. It seems like your fine with the approach we're taking, hitting the draft as well as trading and FA, you just disagree with one or two moves.

Let’s say a fully returned to fitness Trac. Same contract and $ he’s on though. He just wants out of Dees. But has a few suiters. Including us.

If he truly wanted out he would of came out and named a club. Would of forced Melbourne's hand.

Reckon he just aired some grievances for changes to be made and gave out the or ill go threat.

If we get 13 and not Houston, I'd try and split it and get 2 talls for picks between 20 and 25. We'll get 2 genuine KPP who won't be as speculative as most other years
Pick 13 will slide with Ashcroft, Lombard, Kako to Pick 16.
The traded picks will likely slide for Marshall.

Therefore picks 20-25 really need to be 15-20.
The clubs with these picks are GWS currently owning 15, 16 & 21 and Sydney owning 19 & 22.

Kane is not completely wrong, I agree that Houston and Perryman will be the new senior players when all of our veterans retire which is important. But our youth is average at best, and we have one of the oldest lists in the competition. I find it strange that so many people think our youth is elite.
Houston and Perryman are the same age as Noble and Richards.

Just better.

Surely Gold Coast take our deal for a future pick and a ready made player, rather than Carlol’s offer of two speculative future picks. Who really knows with this stuff though.

Especially when Noble wants to go there and they want him. And GC have said publicly they want to deal with us first. It’s an open and shut case really but these flogs in the media have to talk about something to justify their salary this week
