Is there a chance we could groom Treacy as a key back, he doesn't quite have it as a forward, seeing the play coming at him with his big frame good strong mark ,I think he would succeed, uses the ball well. We need back up for Pearce/Cox, Hamling is cooked.
Draper would be that player. He has been named in the emergencies and was going to play this week if Ryan didn't get up. I am certain he would be selected if either Pearce or Cox are injured.

So how do you fix the wafl? The Beagles are a disgrace.
The governing body has hurt WA footy, first with $ubisco and
now with a team with no ties at all.
Then you have salary breaches. Are they really non partial?

Draper, Wilson, Treacy all look AFL quality.

Worner gets so much of the pill, elite runner and contested game, needs to tidy up the kicking.

Henry was good without being great.

Emmett needs fitness.

Kuek is exciting but one of his goals were Joe the goose. If he was 19 I’d be over the moon, but I wonder how long he’ll stay on our list, he’s already 22(?) I think.

Davies … very raw. 😬

Corbett is good, but not selfish enough. Turned over 2-3 passes inside 50 when he should have been kicking at goal. The 1st time is understandable, the 2nd and 3rd just pisses people off.

Annoyed that Erasmus is getting tagged so heavily. But it goes beyond that, the opposition seem to like hurting him, hand on the back of the head, push his face into the turf. I wonder if he’s lippy on the field? Umpiring was a disgrace though, did not protect him at all.

Wilson was a clear best on. Worner should make his debut this year too. Thought Henry was poor. Should be putting up excellent WAFL games if he wants to make it back into the AFL side but he's so far from that. Liked the look of draper.

Also I understand teams want to win but is tagging a 19 year old who's trying to force his was into the main side really in the spirit of the game? Thunder have plenty of damaging players that aren't on an AFL list that could be tagged. Why are teams so set on jeopardising the future of a teenager.

Good summary. Thought Davies was better last week. I think he will be a slow burn this year and have moments where supporters will say he won’t make it. He will also likely play some reserves.

Draper is certainly exciting. I also thought Treacy played well but needs further time in the WAFL. I see him as more CHF. Against St Kilda he was too stationary as a deeper forward.

Erasmus has been coping hard tags from midway through last year. I agree a tag is one thing but the tagger and others sweat on him and bury him hard into the turf as soon as he touches the ball. He is still double touching the ball a bit. I agree the umpires need to look after him if there is holding of his jumper and the like. If he can then be a little cleaner he will get going. Even though he had only 8 or 9 touches there were times he moved nicely through congestion. He needs to look to get a quicker handball out. Watch tapes of Barlow in his prime and Serong is another.

Corbett seems to be adjusting to Freo/Peel game plan. Leads well and has good hands. Decision making and set shot execution needs work. His kicking going forward and in general play is slow and not confident.

I like Kuek and he is very laconic. One passage of play where he jumped athletically late in the fourth - a Perth player took his legs out from under him. He got a free kick which was a surprise. Picked up the ball smoothly and with one hand did a very lazy kick forward then went out on the full. I’d rather he settle down and take more care with the ball. He needs more time and should stay as a rookie list player. He has actually put in quite a bit of size but needs another pre-season. Last year with East Perth was breakout season which then got thrown into disarray after MSD.

I agree Emmett needs to build fitness. Looked gassed many times.

Ras - Tagged out of it. The tag was ludicrous over zealous and he was frequently infringed without getting a kick*. Bit concerning he couldn't get a bit more involved on transition but he worked hard defensively inside. When fully filled out he will be a weapon inside both first hands and defensive pressure wise inside. The final jewel in the Freo God-level inside midfield crown.

Tracey - Got better as the game went on. Have my doubts he'll make it as a AFL key forward since he lacks a bit in agility, tank and core strength (only moderate lack, but enough) given he is at the shorter end of the key forward height continuum. Skills and mongrel are there though. (I suspect he's going to have to switch to defense if he's going to make it.)

Worner - Looks like a bloody good WAFL player

Wilson - BOG

Corbett - Worked hard and ignoring the missed shots a good game. His decision making is not AFL standard however.

Emmett - I know he kicked 0.5 but we might have something here. Would need to see him live (and not drinking. I.E. I'm not going to see it) to get an idea of what his defensive running patterns are like. (Plenty of great small forwards play state league as mid or even key forwards because they have no tank / cbf running. Stubbs for instance in this very game)

Kuek - Kicked 4 against a bad side. The number of times he fell over either getting side stepped trying to tackle or trying to turn in a contest gives me 'never-going-to-make-it vibes (It was Brett Bewley-esqu).

Henry - Had a poor start and had couple of mini sooks but around them did some good stuff. Still doesn't know how to position himself in general play.

Draper - This was the kiddie they've named in the emergencies right? His poise and skill execution really stood out the way a real AFL player stands out playing seconds. I didn't note his defensive work (the broadcast is so low quality any wide shots you can't tell who is who in a pack) but we might have hit Cat B gold here.

Davies - First time I've seen him play. I will reserve judgement as today all I saw was him being outbodied by smaller opponents and fumbles / shanked kicks.

The only player that delivered the footy with any sort of precision into Peels fwd line was Willo, still can’t get my head around why he was dropped.
Probably because what we saw him do yesterday has not been what he was doing in first few games. If he can, he should be bought back in.

Willow was dropped,,he wasn't running out of defense like walker.
I would like to see Wilson on for like Ryan.
Would love to have Wilson kicking in.

Unfortunately Ryan won't be dropped unless injured. At the very least he shouldn't be kicking in. His kick ins are so predictable. Bomb it long to the left along the boundary line. Most irritating thing was in one game last year, he did it 4 times in a row. Same spot same results lol.

so a policy of no integrity at the selection table, where we ignore form and select based on age?
Wilson should be dominating WAFL, that's the thing. If you've been in the AFL as long as him you shouldn't struggle to play better than guys below you.

Wilson has been good this year, but I'd rather develop Walker, O'Driscoll etc. He can come in if someone gets injured down back.

Corbett's kicking was terrible so I can understand why he was wanting to pass it off, but his passes were terrible too.

Emmett looks a bit slow as well as lacking stamina and his kicking wasn't great either.

Draper looked good but I tend to think some are getting a bit carried away. It was Perth after all. He showed some good signs but I'll need to see more of him and more from him before I join the gushing bandwagon.

Superkoops assessment of Kuek is spot on imo. Hopefully he continues to develop and can become a very tall KF at the next level by the end of next year.

Henry was every bit a WAFL player despite the hype the commentator was giving him.

I'm a fan of Worners but yesterday wasn't his best game. He's a bit soft or outside and knows where to be to get the ball and presents well but wasted too much of it yesterday by being to casual, rushing or just taking the wrong option.

I strongly believe that Erasmus now has to start developing at the next level by playing through a few positions including short stints as an inside mid.

Was it against Sydney? Any faith I had in him was lost that game.

Wagner has Wilson's spot at the moment. Not Walker.

Forgot the team. But you would think that if it doesn't work and the other team are onto it, switch it up. Not kick it there, watch it come back then kick there again. I think after the 4th attempt they scored a goal from it.

I'd just like it restated for the record that I spent last year telling you all we should get Draper.
If that is true, why not save that for when he gets a game for Freo, which is admittedly looking more and more like that might happen this year? :p

I can find my quotes from back in December 22, pondering over where Freo plays him and wondering if they would play him as a CHB / HBF (which is where they are currently playing him):

The really interesting questions are what is his AFL role, does he play forward or back up in the WAFL, and/or does he play on a flank or as a KP? How does the club attempt to develop this clearly talented multi-positional player into something that stacks up at AFL level?
  • If he starts as a CHB, he is likely going to be competing with Davies and Benning for the second key defender spot in the WAFL, which would probably mean he would be being relegated to the reserves quite a bit, because Davies is likely to be better at pure defence, whereas Benning has a year on him - will he be able to compete?
  • If he starts as a CHF, then he would be competing with Benning and/or Kraidy or Knobel. He might be able to get ahead of Benning due to his athleticism, but Peel might want more experience with Kraidy.
  • He could play as a forward / ruck, but then we have both Benning and Kuek and one of Kraidy or Knobel, so I doubt he will get a run in the ruck any time soon?
  • Like Morabito when he came back from injury, he could play as a HBF...but ultimately is that a good position for his development, especially when we are already laden with talented HBFs?
  • On the flipside, if he is playing off the HFF, he will now be competing with medium forwards such as Sturt, Banfield and now Emmett. Obviously he has height and maybe even endurance on his side against each, but also would likely be at a disadvantage on the ground level....
Funny thing is that he has shot past Benning, arguably Davies as well, Knobel and Kraidy have been injured / started in the reserves....
