Player Watch Pick #14 (2019) - Miles Bergman

The thing about Dylan Williams is that we have shifted $80k of the contract he signed along with Bergman and Georgiades that took him to the end of this year outside of the cap when we delisted him and picked him up as a rookie.

We have another $80k that we can save by keeping him on the rookie list for next year as well. Meaning that we've got an extra $160k to offer him (or other players) if he stays that he would forfeit if he decided to go elsewhere.

Then of course, you've got the fact that every game he plays in our 22 he's getting an extra $5k on top of whatever his contract was (some players include match payments in their base which is why clubs rush those players back into the side when they are fit - Williams would be on base + match payments. This could also be what Georgiades is actually referring to when he says he wants to be guaranteed a best 22 spot - he may be talking about guaranteed match payments in his next contract, which is worth another $120k.)

This is why you see a lot of premiership sides built around players that were plucked and then promoted from the rookie list. Williams is the last player I'm worried about re-signing.

If it's a 2 year contract, are we just delaying the inevitable or would the deal result in him becoming a RFA? (might be a dumb question but FA rules are confusing to me)

I'm just intrigued as to why it isn't longer than a 2 year deal

I don’t think I understand.

How does Port lose $80k if he moves elsewhere? Wouldn’t his spot on the rookie list be filled by someone else and their salary would also be discounted?

so the only difference would be “salary plus match payments” v “salary including payments”- which Port still pays.

I thought the advantage of having him on the rookie list is they can delist him after a year. Unlike normal contracts.

I am a terrible reader of sarcasm on online platform so I am not sure if this is one or not. And I have just made my way through to this thread so it might've been mentioned earlier already!

But Miller is not Miles' brother......Miles, I believe, has one brother named Blake.
Not so much "a terrible reader of sarcasm," more like just "a terrible reader" full stop.

It has been a running meme here for months!

I don't understand the logic? When Williams was delisted and re-rookied he would have taken a pay cut. That pay cut would have somewhat been offset by the $5000 per game payments re the rookie contract.

As I understand it if we give Williams another contract offer (which we will) if he turns it down he is not considered an unrestricted free agent. I assume it means if he wanted to leave the club he would need to go into the draft.

But surely he will not stay on the rookie list and be offered a decent contract? He would interest campaigners like Essenten who may offer him a bigger contract than he's worth to try and get him for free.

He wouldn't have taken a pay cut, he would've got his contracted salary. The only purpose of putting him on the rookie list was opening another spot on the main list to take a player in the ND.

The 'Miles Bergman is Miller Bergman's brother' meme is the most effectively I've ever been trolled by Bigfooty. I know most people who say it are joking but there are enough who genuinely believe it that I can never be sure, and that drives me mental.

As others have said it is sarcasm and a Port board meme but don't tell the AFL. ;)

I'm not sure why people continue to act as if two guys that are clearly related is some sort of meme but carry on thinking it is if it makes you happy..

Bergman has played less games than Orazio Fantasia over the last 5 years

Management decision I suspect.

Tasmania and ridiculous money getting put out there to make them competitive. Just a thought.

Travis Boak did the same in his younger days as well. When your coming to your peak and interstate, it's a smart management move to make sure you always get what your worth. Unless it's a long term deal on Monster $$$$ it's not worth it for a player in his position.

End of the day, he may well leave after 2 more years on a big deal, that's what the market and system has been set up for.

But look at the moment, looks like he's here for a few more years.

Pretty much

Maybe he's still not sure about his future in SA and is seeing how he feels in a couple of years, maybe he and the club realise that he's played ~10 awesome games this year while spending the rest of his time as a decent fringe player and he deserves recognition for that, and the real payday is if the form continues.

Miles probably didn't want a longer deal so he can reassess his options in two years. The club may have well offered him a longer deal.

Relax, the two line summary isn’t what I thought it would be.

But the funny bit is when you go onto the next line…

Has he signed?

Miles has a new name 'Bergman the Butcher' due to his horrendous kicking ability. 63% eff and 5 clangers per game. OVERRATED!!

I'd trade him and bank the picks.
What's with all the shit takes from you recently?

Are you OK?
