Player Watch Pick #14 (2019) - Miles Bergman

If I’m honest, out of potentially losing Houston, Butters and Berg - Berg is the one I’d want to keep
Yep. Much better defensively and only marginally weaker on the offence.
Considering the rest of our HBFers his defensive ability is so much more valuable

Agree with much better defensively but Houston is much better offensively. Houston will be All Australian for a second year in a row and top 5 in Champion Data rankings AFL wide. Berg has had a good 6 weeks or so. But his name will not even be mentioned for All Aus squad. Berg has found his role as 3rd defender. Still young but will need to improve his ground balls and kicking to play midfield/wing.

Houston is rated the best kick in the comp, Bergman is better over head and tackles better, both are wonderfull players

Bearing in mind that my knowledge and understanding of the finer points of football probably pale into insignificance next to most on here - but I wondered if the things that Miles talked about that they had been particularly working on, mostly the groundball work, would be mostly down to the line coach to instigate. Plus he talked about the emphasis on 'shape' and I wondered if that was the sort of thing that Selwood was referring to when he said they didn't know what each other was doing.

Sam Landsberger said he'll be gone the year after.

Ahhhhh yes the famed Sam Landsberger (Never heard of him) said it so clearly it's already a done deal. Future First and Third in 2026 incoming.

Can't wait to trade that for Kozzie (He's homesick)

I listened to his podcast, and it didn't sound overly reassuring but also not too alarming at the same time. I think it genuinely is a contract-by-contract proposition for Miles, unfortunately.

If Houston can decide to go back to Victoria to follow his girlfriend, while in contract, then it's quite possible that others will follow suit. Bergman and Butters are the other two that concern me the most.

The key is that we maximise the output of the list that we currently have (i.e., win a premiership this year please), and then if we can't hold onto players, we drive very hard to get the best returns possible on trades. None of this sympathetic bullshit about letting players go for unders return.
