Player Watch Pick #16 (2016) - Todd Marshall

I was honestly surprised he didn't retire at the end of the last season with all those head knocks he has gotten. I guess one way to look at this injury if it is the whole season then at least he won't get any concussions for the year. Just hopefully the club and everyone gets around him in supporting him this year to come back stronger.

We are all sorry for Todd but his health must come first and I hope he uses the time to think about his future, he is in my opinion 1 concussion away from being told to give it up.
His concussion early in the semi final and him going off would have cost us that final we got lucky in the end
And I felt that should have been it for him. All the best for his recovery

Lol, i literally forgot we drafted this kid. Hope he rips it up in the intra club & preseason.

Feel for Todd rotten luck.

Todd signed that five year contract at the beginning of 2024 .

I appreciate it depends on the contract terms but does anyone know in general how the contract payments fare in the case of long term injury absences?

Does the AFL assist the Club with payments as part of a workers comp type scheme for players?

Edit: The answer was here in this very thread by It Just Is after the concussion issue resurfaced at the end of last year.

We are on the hook for a portion and anything beyond 3 years:

Clubs to get cap relief for medically retired players

The AFL has established new salary cap guidelines for clubs who lose players to concussion
www.afl.com.au
www.afl.com.au
The League wrote to clubs to explain its set of guidelines that will govern the total player payments relief for AFL and AFLW players who have to retire before the end of their contract due to a recommendation from the AFL concussion panel.
https://www.afl.com.au/news/1153821...arcus-bontempelli-surges-tagger-gets-10-votes
For AFL players affected, the guidelines have two key features – the ability to gradually pay the negotiated financial settlement with the player over the period of the contract and also maximum thresholds of salary cap relief within three years following the retirement.

In the year immediately following the retirement, the max threshold will be 90 per cent, the second year the max threshold will be 75 per cent and in the third year the max threshold will be 50 per cent.

Although his extended absence for (probably) all of 2025 is not concussion related I'm sure the previous concussion incidents will be foremost in Todd and Port's thinking when it comes to the future of his contract.

What an absolute waste of a footballer. All potential, but never there when it matters.

Poorly managed, poorly trained, absolutely terrible contract (5 years for a concussion threat).

Sums up the club atm.

The contract made me wince. Everyone knew it.

Not much point comparing yesteryear m8.

Players being drafted at 18 and getting $100k + allowances, should be ready to play with the big boys.

Okay. How many rookie key forwards do you think are actually doing this though?

Hoping this protects his head for a bit, really imo should be retired due to that so let's hope this protects him from himself

Wingard did his in August 2023, had surgery and returned to vfl in April 2024, that was an 8 month comeback, wouldn't rule out Hinkley rushing back one of his favourites if required

Feel for Todd. It's a very unfortunate series of incidences. I also believe he should've retired after his latest head knock, this simply delays the inevitable. If he got a knock this year he would've surely considered retiring.

On the bright side, we don't have to watch them pick him each week and we can instead look at a permanent replacement option from round 1. Lord to have one last crack at it before we trade him on at years end. Finlayson to have one last crack at it before we delist him at years end (or whenever his contract is up). Whitlock to debut mid way through the year potentially.

Perhaps we trial Mitch and Luko as a two tall attack similar to Carlton's forward line last year.

My understanding is that a year off will not help Marshall's concussion issues.

I was surprised when it looked like he was going to play half forward this year.

It looks even stronger that his contract is one of the worst in the AFL.

He should have retired last year but we don't do those types of things down at the club anymore. He would've been a very hard watch in 2025.

The guys who could step up are:

Ratugolea - got the tools but not the footballing brain
Finlayson - soft but creative
Lord - young and has potential. You would have to give him first crack.
Whitlock - huge potential. Perhaps blood him midyear unless he tears the track up in preseason.

Other options:

Horne-Francis - as the genuine 3rd option. Robbing Peter to pay Paul
Walsh - who knows?
Berry - only play two talls and have a fast, running, goal kicking small brigade

The CHF or 3rd tall is definitely one of the biggest problems with the list at the moment.

Not saying he needs to win the Coleman.

If Whitlock at least matches Mitch Geogiades stats in his first season that would be a bonus in Marshell's absences.

Remember Whitlock came out and said he wanted to prove everyone wrong for not being picked in the first round.

Let's hope he puts the money where his mouth is :)

Do we even need Todd?

Its a bit smaller and not exactly like for like but keep in mind we already have Luko + Pep + 2xJoes coming in to our forward line and Dix was already not best 22 in 2024.

Luko MG DBJ Pep BIGWILLYSTYLE Joe1 Joe2 is honestly not that crazy when you consider that Rat, Fin + Lord are also available to take that big key forward role at different times. We don't have to bomb it on anyone's head, we could actually have a mobile forward line.

Of course Hinks will probably back in Ratkins and Mac and Cheese to take 2 of those spots but that's another problem for another day.
