Player Watch Pick #18 (2019) - Mitch Georgiades

Again, basically nobody questioned this decision (apart from people calling for Dixon and Finlayson to share the ruck duties with Lycett in the Port Districts As)

But selecting Lord ahead of him when one of those positions opened up was a bad call for the reasons already stated. The fact that he then got injured playing SANFL while he should have been playing AFL, while purely bad luck, has just made that decision sting even more.
OR we could have been playing four talls .. With Marshall and Georgiades playing forward for the entire game, Dixon and Finlayson playing forward and second ruck. All four of those players were comfortable upgrades on McUseless.

Dixon got injured
Lord is the more like for like replacement over Georgiades

If it was Marshall or finlayson? Than yeah Georgiades shouldve come in.

Lord is taller but he's not like Dixon IMO. It's not worth the gulf in class. Dixon is a gun and is still our best KPF right now, but if he decides to retire tomorrow to be a Supercars driver, we can build a good quality KPF division around Marshall, Finlayson and Georgiades.

Absolutely, given all 4 of them are very mobile for their size.

Ben did his ACL and was playing poorly on return this year but just kicked 5 in an easy kill against North. Max has already torn his ACL in his draft year from memory? They still picked Max over Rozee who they got a hard on for late and their were strong whispers they were going to take Rozee. Port were in a great position at that pick, Rozee or King was always a win win.
Easy kill… Ben McKay is going to fit our backline perfectly then.

give him a 5 year contract, give him 2 years to recover and job security for the 3 after that! If he no good after 3rd season one of the West teams will still pay up for a "local" first round product.

Doubt he would sign a 5 year deal on the money we would offer. We couldn't justify a huge offer on what we have seen plus the ACL. I would say we are prepared to offer you 450-500k per year for between 2-5 years. You fill in the contract length that suits you. 2x500k is low risk for us. 5x500k splits the risk between both parties where we are getting a guy that will either be cooked, or very likely a much better than 500k player in year 4-5. The risk starts to go back to him the longer the contract as the EBA will mean 500k is closer to the average AFL salary.

Before you go telling people to * off buddy you might want to compare apples with apples. Ollie Lord kicked at 25% GA in 1 game and was lucky to reach that. His work was done on a defender nearly 3 inches shorter than himself who plays as an inside midfielder, never as a key defender. It was a credible debut from a player who was at least prepared to put his body on the line and was decent at ground level. However he needs to be fitter to deserve more than one AFL game in a row. The reality is he would not have got a touch in the second half had he been playing on a tall defender from a decent club.

He had a lacerated kidney 2 months ago. He deserved a shot. This idea that if Georgiades plays AFL, everything is fine and everyone wins is bunk. He tore an ACL from nothing. Clearly there was something wrong and if he doesn't do it then, he does it some time in the future. There aren't too many players with chronic ACLs any more, Farrell and Hayes hardly missed a beat. Gray got better. Long term it might be good for him as it was for Gray. Clearly something is not quite right upstairs with him going from prime Tony Lockett to Prime John Butcher in the goal kicking department. The best thing that can happen is him lining up in rd1 next year with a massive erection and just happy to be out on the ground.

I stand corrected then. His current level of fitness is just fine. I look forward to seeing him cramping up in the last quarter for the rest of his career :p Did I say it was his fault he wasn't AFL match fit? I understand why he wasn't match fit. If he wasn't match fit however, its just another reason why he shouldn't have been picked to play in an AFL game.

Clearly you don't understand the mechanics of what can cause an ACL so I am not going to go there. This idea that an ACL can be good for a player is the biggest pile of tripe I have heard in this forum. Just because one player, Robbie Gray, said that his ACL taught him the value of preparation etc that it takes to be an elite AFL player posters are popping up convinced that a year off football recovering from a catastrophic injury could be good for a player, physically and mentally! Especially a 21 yo developing kf. Laugh, I nearly shat!!! Ask Primus and Francou how good it was for them to miss a year of football. Jeez.

He’s back in Perth now having a break from footy.
There’s no such thing as a good long term injury at any age.

Silver lining doesn't mean preferred option .. jeez. Maybe try reading the comment where I say in recent times ACL's are rarely a death sentence. When those players were doing knees, people still thought IT was a passing fad and Bill Cosby was one of the most beloved people in America. **** me.

I really like the last sentence of your post.

As for the rest The reference to Primus and Francou was that they most likely missed out on playing in a Premiership, not what it did to their careers. Otherwise, you have your point of view, I have mine.

I know it's just speculation but i don't think Georgiadis was or is intending to leave. Far as i can mostly tell, it seems all clubs at the moment are not resigning players until later in the 2nd half of the season.

On the weekend Mitch Cleary reported on channel 7 that Georgiadis was offered a lucrative contract by West Coast at the end of last season to leave but he chose to stay at Port. If he wanted to go home he would've taken that and Port would've taken the first round compo pick.

Ollie Lord deserved to be selected and shouldn't be clipped by some just because they wanted Georgiadis selected. With his talent, Georgiades should be dominating the sanfl but isn't and has now done his ACL. s**t happens unfortunately.
That's because there is no CBA and nobody knows what the cap will be when the 2025-2031 huge jump in media rights kicks in. Clubs can't really plan for 2025 onwards with any degree of confidence and manager's with any brains would be telling players to wait as well.

This board cries every time Hinkley doesnt do like for like changes

When he does and brings in Lord for Dixon, everyone some individuals cries again!

The butterfly effect could have Georgiades slipping down his stairs going to the AFL game if he was picked, argueing if and buts is completely mute.

Im confident he will sign regardless
FTFY.

ACL reco done in Perth. Don't know if that means much, or just that the club is happy with surgeons over there, and reckon rehab from day 1 at family home is better than a few days in Adelaide before heading west.

Initially I was all for the club letting Georgiades do parts of his preseason in Perth so he could be with his family etc. And I admit I have no real idea what work he was doing over there, and whether he did any of his most recent preseason over there.

I am starting to wonder whether it is impacting on his development and the clubs ability to track what he is doing. At some point in professional sport you have to commit to using club doctors and surgeons, and understand that your training, rehabilitation has to be done under the supervision of club coaches and training staff.

For sure give Georgiades the opportunity to spend time with his family to the extent that other players would be able to in the same situation. I think it gets to a point where this treatment works both ways though. If the club extends this sort of treatment to you, you do the right thing by the club contractually etc. Maybe behind closed doors that is happening...who knows.

Off-contract Port Adelaide forward Mitch Georgiades is expected to walk from Alberton if he can't be guaranteed senior football in the future.

The young spearhead will unfortunately miss the remainder of the 2023 season after suffering an ACL injury over a week ago in the SANFL, with the setback bringing an abrupt end to the 21-year-old's fourth season with the Power.

West Coast is said to be first in line of clubs interested in securing the WA raised Georgiades.

"Port's position is they want to keep him, but there's a caveat - they won't break the bank to do so. They're not going to give up everything to keep him on their list, especially because he finished out of the team before he did his ACL.

"The expectation is that multi-year offers will come, from not just West Coast, but also big Victorian clubs and his future is very much up in the air because of that."

The young fella seems happy back home. I hope he stays as he is an exciting player. If not I can dream

Brenan Cox and Harry Barnett for Mitch Georgiades and a 2 rounder.

His best strategy would be sign a 2 year deal with Port, use the first year to recover and get back to playing footy to be ready for a strong second year where he will have a better idea of his contractual value.
