Analysis Pick Mitch Harvey now, not in 2017!!

You could have Godzilla at CHF but it makes no difference if the coaching instruction is for him to get down to the defensive 50 to help out in the backlines.

I'm with RussellEbertHandball I would play Trengove as the second ruck and as a third tall while Ryder is out so we have one decent tall target up there on the rebound from defence.

But all this talk of a gorilla CHF patrolling the forward line is bullshit anyway. There's no such position any more in modern footy. When you're called upon to get down back to help out you go. Even Taylor Walker who is a goalkicking machine spends a lot of time between half back and wing in crow games.

If were were serious about a set CHF Westhoff could play the role but he's too busy being allowed to hide on ball or at half back. He's no bruiser but neither was Darren Smith. But Hoff at 199cm and super agility for his height could easily be a game breaker up forward.

We need 3 tall forward otherwise we will continue to be completely reliant on small marking targets in our forward line. Our conversion rate from inside 50s in our home defeats this year is showing that's a limited strategy.
Agree, plus a genuine crumber.
When Ryder was in the team a number of times we had multiple players going for the same mark and no one at their feet.

If Trengove can't be played in ruck - and that's getting a bit rich one of these uberpaid athletes picking and choosing his position - then drop Clurey, throw Trengove down back again and pick Harvey. And give him the coach instruction not to cross the centre line. If his opponents runs off, well there's more than enough players in the back third to cover especially if a few oppo players hang back to form the wall across centre.

Our forward line looks so much better with Westhoff down there, the guy can turn it on in a quarter and is hard to match up on.
Of course that requires our midfield to actually get it into the forward line at some sort of pace, not wait until every opposition player is in our 50..

Will Harvey mark our forward entry bombs?
Great question...
Or will he be anywhere near our forward line when we enter?
Will he lead to the forward pocket?
Can he kick goals from the forward pocket after he marks it?
If he marks it anywhere inside the forward line will he just do the 'team thing' and pass it off?

More chance than Sam Gray v Harry Taylor.

Has as much chance as Ryder, Westhoff, and Schulz with handfuls of opposition talls contesting the same ball or opposition players cutting off their leads. I see little point playing Harvey just for getting games into him if he's going to be setup to fail. Got no qualms playing Harvey once we fix our game and our performance that results in our regular talls taking marks.

Harvey is probably 20 this year. Tredrea was told he may be traded to the crows. He struggled to make afl in his first couple of years.
No he didnt struggle. He broke his arm in his first game against Essendon in 1997 and then in 1998 near the end of his brilliant game against Carlton he dislocated his knee and was out for 8 weeks so his lack of games came from injuries not struggling to be good enough. He asked for a transfer to Carlton at the end of of 1998 because he didnt get on with Jack. He was intense Jack was more laid back.

Edit that told he will be traded to the crows is bullshit myth unless it was some dopey throw away line by somebody. Bucky was never going to trade him to anyone. He paid him $$$ to stay out of the 1995 draft and paid a $10k fine for it. Bucky knew he was going to ask for a trade to Carlton so when he came with Motley to meet Bucky, Bucky fell off his chair to act up how shocked he was despite Motley telling him what was going on.

Yes he did struggle to impress the selectors and played more Magpies games in his first season. He gradually got games in the second year. The Carlton thing was a ploy (serious or not) on Motley's part and the club responded by warning a trade to the crows, as told to me by a man amongst it.

He broke his wrist playing for the Magpies on a wet day against he Eagles in a curtain raiser at Football Park.

So what injury did he pick up against Essendon in his debut game in 1997? Shoulder?

He was 18 in 1997 and still growing and injured. I dont know what you mean by "He gradually got games in the second year." He played Rd 1 in 1998 and played the first 7 games and it was in Rd 7 against Carlton that he kicked 8.4, took 17 marks and badly dislocated his knee in the last quarter. He missed 5 weeks with his injury and played the remaining 10 games. So in his 2nd year he played 17 games and was out 5 weeks with his knee dislocation. See

I mean that his performances were spasmodic in the first couple of years. In '97 he played many Magpies games and broke a wrist during the winter, about middle of the season. Out for about 6 weeks and returned to play the year in the Magpies. I don't know what injury he got against Essendon, if he got one at all. Maybe he did but he played Magpies games prior to his broken wrist too. So he got games in '98 of which the first few rounds were ok at best.

Sorry peeps but I don't think Harvey is the answer. Our game plan stinks. There is no one currently on our list able to make it work. We have real good players that are being forced to play stupid football.

I'm not comparing Mitch to Travis Cloke but it is interesting to see that in 2005 Cloke played 15 games for 10 goals and in 2006 played 15 games for 6 goals.

Our gameplan is fine. It's that the opposition are forcing us wide and away from the corridor, we are playing the same risky kicks but doing from further back in our defence and wider along the ground instead of predominantly through the middle ala last year. The gameplan at its core isn't the problem, the fact our adjustments to what the opposition are doing to us is the major issue.

If our entire game plan can be so easily destructed, then our game plan stinks.

If the game plan fails once it comes into contact with reality then it's not a gameplans arseh*le.

I'm a big fan of Hinkley but not a fan of the current
- hack out of a contest to a wall of opposition players
- kicking so wide and in fact choosing the wide option when a better one presents in the corridor.

I actually think Kens propoganda is justified.

We are not playing "brave" football as we don't have the confidence to hit our targets in the middle. We were attacking the corridor at all costs last year.

I have no idea what the answer is.

As Homer said when he was promoted once
"Errr, can you guys like, work any harder?"

At this stage of the season, we need to be reassessing what would constitute a success from here until seasons end. For mine, getting 7 - 8 games into Mitch would be a terrific result and I'd rather him learn his craft playing alongside Schulz. An investment in Harvey now could reap dividends for the next 10 years

Get games into him asap.. This season is a write off. Lets see how he goes and see if he's in the vision next year when we have another shot at it. Schultz is just about gone.. We might as well.

Wont happen though.

We are one game out of the eight at the half way mark of the season. Carlton don't even start tanking this early.

If We're going to finish 12th-7th I would like to get as many games into Harvey, Amon, Clurey and Ah Che as possible!

And we need to win 7/11 to MABE qualify for the 8... I don't see it happening this year unfortunately
