Analysis Pick Mitch Harvey now, not in 2017!!

I was going to ask about Mitch Harvey. Slim chance of you chaps playng finals. What up with Mason Shaw? Is he injured? Freo are linked with every tall forward. Freo have only had 2 debuts. Alex Pearce has been getting games with all our tall defenders out and Lachie weller was chosen because fyfe was injured.
Mason has had his injury woes and can't string a large block of games together, he is every bit the part but we can't develop him fast enough. As for Harvey, he's a keeper. Butcher was our next tall forward and a lot of time was put into him but no chocolates there. Harvey and Shaw are the two that can make it but until we know if Schulz is staying or going, we will have a better idea, if we should fast track Shaw or Harvey, or go after a Dixon type. To be honest it's hard to tell, we could throw Harvey in the deep end but with our midfield struggling without Polec and Wines, his opportunities will be limited.

I feel like we are falling into the trap of hoping they will be good, whilst realising deep down neither will be much good. These 2 remind me of toby thurstans (albeit for 1 great grand final), damon white, the big dud from north Adelaide and basically every big forward we have recruited save for Schultz and hopefully ryder. They are big and tall and strong and that's it

I feel Shaw will make it, Harvey will not be a permanent fix at full forward. We also have some tall promising kids but are way off yet.

We need to absolutely nail this draft.. Almost our most important draft as I cant see any young player at the maggies that is exciting, that jumps out at you, that genuinely looks like they will play 150+ games

Shaw is always linked to going back home and to Freo and is always seems to be injured. Played on the weekend for the Bs but got a leg injury.

Historical stats based on where these guys are drafted would say you are correct. Just gotta hope one of these guys bucks that trend.

Recruited/drafted the mosquito fleet 2014
Giants in 2015
maybe in-between for 2016

Amon AhChee Palmer Frampton Howard Austin are definite maybes. Am hopeful they have a higher ceiling than Harvey who tho young
has not kicked the selection door down. Mitch sort of had to be used as a ruck man but that he ain't esp at AFL level.

Sorry, on what are you basing these assertions?

How can we actually know that they won't make it in the AFL when they haven't even debuted?

our development of FF is pretty ordinary. 1 in 18 years is not a great record.......even if the 1 was pretty fantastic

On the basis ive seen them play plenty of SANFL and they aren't AFL standard. Even with AFL standard fitness they don't, cant and wont dominate SANFL footy so they have no chance in AFL.

Harvey has the tools to be a decent 100+ gamer. He has a great kick, he kicks straight for goal, he has size, good hands and some footy nous - more than Butcher. He is a week shy of turning 20 and needs to develop his tank and other aspects of his game. His tank is better than Dean Cox's when Cox was 20 years of age. He isnt going to be a 60-80 goal kicker in his first year. He doesnt need to be. He has to provide a more accurate for goal target, than Westhoff who doesnt provide enough as the 2nd KFP. Harvey gets 5 set kicks at goal a game at AFL level playing FF or CHF he is guaranteed to kick 4 goals most games.

So, effectively, nothing.

I'm not claiming that they'll both become elite AFL KPFs, but they've certainly shown glimpses.

Mason Shaw last year kicked 6 goals against WWT, 3 the week after against West Adelaide and then another 3 against Sturt. He finished with 25 goals from 14 games. He'll only be 22 at the start of next season. Absolutely premature to decisively say that he won't make it.

Mitch Harvey's only in his second year on our list! Seriously, he's still a teenager. He hasn't kicked a bag yet, but he had a pretty consistent five weeks earlier this year, in which he kicked at least 2 goals a game. Absolutely premature to decisively say that he won't make it.

Opinion based. I can decisively say IMO neither will make it.

Well, sure. But it's not going to be a particularly interesting discussion if you can't put forward anything factual to back up your claims.

im surprised by that statement, not sure how howard frampton palmer and austin havent done enough to get you excited in their first year of senior footy, all will have a huge impact in the future of the club going forward. harvey is still one to keep around for a while too.

Frampton and Palmer in particular have had ****ing huge first years for players taken at that stage of the draft. Palmer was pick 78 and Frampton 84.

Yea you can but it's like saying any forward 21 or under across the league who hasn't debuted is a spud

So basically it's a rubbish opinion

Yeah.. Nah

No its nothing like that at all.

it's an opinion I have formed from watching both players, neither have done anything outstanding IMO that warrants the amount of hope shown on this forum.

How was Warren Tredrea.Steven Kernahan or Wayne Carey doing at 22.
These blokes haven't even shown enough promise that they would have quarter the ability of those other blokes.
