The whole thing is an exercise in telling him to pull his head in and that his actual value doesn't reflect the value in his own mind. A dangerous game, but it could set him up for a great back half of his career no matter who he plays for.

Chad has gotten away with a lot across his time with us in terms of breezing through pre-seasons and so on, and it's on us for not pulling him into line sooner. The truth is that no one likes being smacked down, especially someone who perceives they are almost untouchable. It'll burn in his guts for a bit and he'll flirt with the idea of going but the longer time goes on he'll settle down and give next year an almighty whack.

However - if the Dogs manage to secure some picks that will satisfy Port, this could change in an instant. Still in the balance but I think it will speak volumes for him if he stays and comes back with the right attitude.

People can talk Wingard down all they like but the facts speak for themselves. His CV rivals nearly any player of his age or younger across the entire AFL. He's a dual All Australian as a forward and over the past 18 months has started taking steps towards becoming the star midfielder he always seemed destined to be. He was our best midfielder in the second half of the season, which is reinforced by the club B&F voting.

If you've got concerns over motivation/commitment issues then you say 'look Chad, we'll give you a $750k base, but you can make up to $1m if you achieve clause a, b and c'. It's not like Chad's the mercenary type, he's always emphasised that he's family first, actively made sure he got to stay in SA during his draft year and has never shown any kind of inclination to want to leave the club until now. It doesn't add up, there must be a significant push factor from the club's end or things just wouldn't be playing out like this.

People keep talking about rare levels of elite talent, but to me those players win games for you like the games where we lost to Hawthorn, Adelaide and West Coast this year. They do everything in the pre-season and more and drive themselves and their team mates to achieve their very best.

If Chad Wingard had Kane Mitchell's work ethic he'd be the best player in the AFL.

Yep. The club may want to look ruthless but instead has been reckless in the way it has handled this. You just have to look at the progress of Wingard's Instagram reactions to the story to see how badly it was mismanaged. When the rumours about the club being willing to trade him first came out, Chad responded with a jokey piece about doing anything not to be traded. The next steps were stories about Chad's apparent demands for $1mil per year and other spin about 'reasons' for him to be traded. Chad's reaction was a comment about the media only telling part of the story. Now, the club seems to be half-heartedly accepting they cannot get value for Chad but the rumours about shopping around persist. That brought the most ominous of Chad's posts, which according to the brother of the runner, was interpreted by the Club as a swipe at it.

It all points to a dangerous game being played by amateurs (including the Cash Cow's mate).

And this is at the root of everything now. He's been in his comfort zone from day 1. Situations like this breed apathy and laziness.

It is something that has manifested throughout the club with its 'we're all mates, don't break up the band' shtick and Ken's continual 'trust in the playing group' line.

I get people want to blame the coach, as he's the focal point and deserves some of the flack. But this playing group is getting off far to easily for my liking.

I hope he stays though and sticks it up everyone. His favourite sportsman is LeBron James. It is time for him to become footballs LeBron James. And no, not the leave Cleveland for Miami and win titles LeBron. The win a title for your hometown LeBron.

Are performance clauses actually a regular thing? If they are, we should have a lot of salary space to play with.

A couple of other random points:

Not everyone responds to a rocket by sticking around and improving.

Given problems with AA selection and Brownlow processes, a player would be rightly reluctant to agree to performance bonuses based on either. Using a player's failure to get on the AA team or enough Brownlow votes to deride his value is foolish.

Our players not being the best they can be is not because they didnt work hard enough for long enough or not committed enough...its more likely there not being coached\developed\managed to a high enough level..and that rests on kens shoulders.

Of course it does. Saying otherwise is garbage. Drop players if they aren't working hard enough. I didn't see Chad get dropped last year or any previous year before that did you?

Shiel has chosen Essendon.

If you were building a player in a laboratory to be a perfect fit for Essendon's midfield, you'd get Dylan Shiel. Gives them the inside grunt they've been craving without losing any of the run which makes their gameplan work.

If they can land him, Essendon are a legitimate flag threat next year IMO.

Absolutely didn't want him to go there for that exact reason.

Joy... All the teams full of campaigners are getting good while we choke on our own tongue.
