I got so pissed when we werent even taking a look at Sam Collins when he was available and our defence was midget poo central with an aging Coneus.

Esava becomes the back up tall defender in the sanfl, taking over the role from Clurey/McKenzie.

Walsh and Moss will be the development tall defenders. Walsh could probably play next year if required.

We could pick up someone in the SSP, but how many tall defenders do you need in the reserves?

At that point you're looking at another young tall defender like Clancy Dennis or a guy who was cut like Ethan Phillips

Agree on Finlayson who I think has played in defence before. Marshall could be a very handy key defender. I’ve thought that for a while.
Everyone says they are too soft to play defence but neither are as soft as Lobb.

The Power has kept a list spot free and will give North Melbourne VFL captain Jack Watkins a chance to get signed during the supplemental selection period. Watkins, a 23-year-old midfielder, won the Kangaroos’ best-and-fairest for a second consecutive season.
Although the Roos missed out on a spot in the finals, captain Watkins was a shining light in midfield, averaging 24.9 and 5.6 inside 50s over 18 appearances on his way to a medal-winning vote tally of 134.

Port is assessing other potential train-on players and is yet to invite anyone else.

Missed the boat on DGB

The real question I have on Watkins is, does anybody ever see him playing AFL? I've not watched him so if anyone else has then I'll take their word.

Or is it really a stunt to try keep Butters? Not sure how I feel about that unless he's guaranteed to stay. Sounds dumb to me

Parker in his post-draft interview emphasised Burgoyne and Montgomery are still father-son eligible and he hoped they would continue to be part of Port's program to develop in the areas where we thought they need to. I expect they will train with Port during the off-season. The door is at least ajar.

In a compromised draft next year, with several players coming out of contracts, it wouldn't surprise me if we decided to take all 3 + Wakelin if all of them decent seasons. Maybe factored into our thinking when we cheaply gave away our F1

While I agree that it impacted, his form in the preseason games before that injury was not compelling either. He needs to have a much more consistent presence throughout the duration of games. I was most concerned by his tendency to play from behind and trail opponents in all matches he played this year.
Part of my issue with what you point out is what he's being instructed to do, everytime I've heard Ken and others say he could replace the Dixon role or he plays like Dixon is a shakes head moment for me. Crash in, be aggressive yes absolutely but please no hanging back, playing from behind and getting in stationary positions ffs.

Good thing we traded our future first for a key forward, that guy must be good!
Now that we have Whitlock, I feel a fair bit better about the combination of Georgiades, Lukosius and Whitlock going forward. It’s a good mix that covers different bases especially with the prospect of Berry and Barrett also bringing different talents to their roles forward.

I hate that we traded out of the first round but I think we’ll get back in there with one of Farrell (RFA) or Bergman moving on at the end of 2025, unfortunately.

Watkins is a small mid.
I believe a bigger bodied and taller option in the midfield is a more pressing need for us going forward.
You're right - maybe he's here to keep Butters with us?

Also I don't think that Luko would have suited a Hardwick games style anyway so add that to a huge wage. Then paying a huge contract for Mac Andrew and then again for Rioli he was surplus to requirements and we should have capitalised on that like Geelong did. I can't say we got pantsed, but I still don't know what Atkins contract length is and I don't want to know. Its going to take a lot of convincing to ever make me see that was a good thing.
We received pick 29 for bringing home Atkins who is simple a cherry on top bonus as that pick gave us Jack Whitlock

For me it is a rare win, win a current VFL Captain who has just claimed back-to-back best and fairest with North.
From Bacchus Marsh he is eager to relocate to SA and happens to be best mates with Butters.

And yes, he may not get picked up in the SSP but has committed to playing for Port next year regardless where we all know the Magpies badly need some depth.

With no first rounder next year and a co promised draft the spots are there if they are willing to fight for them.

And don't forget about Xavier Walsh, the former East Perth 195cm spear head has a bit of mongrel in him and has shown he can play at both ends.

Only if Whitlock can develop to play 2nd ruck.

They say he can but I don't see it yet. Doesn't seem to like the bash and crash enough.

It's an area for development but he has done quit a bit of ruck work at least at underage footy.

Another area for growth with Whitlock is his ruck craft. An invaluable trait for key forwards is to provide a secondary ruck rotation, and he was a reliable chop-out option before upping his minutes on-ball towards the end of the season. Whitlock was not a massive hitout winner and can further develop, but showed great signs of clever play around stoppages with his ability to tap to himself or teammates, and help work clearances.
