im sure been said already....but how bloody good was the umpiring by Eleni Glouftsis on Sunday. Id go as far as saying best umpiring ive ever seen. I just knew when she blew the whistle it was the right call with zero bias.
Knew her when she was in State underage Cricket Team with my Daughter and followed her umpiring career therafter . Watched her do U18's, Ressies then League SANFL . a few years back at the Parade v Norwood she was the standout Ump on the day , no stuff ups ! , I reckon she'll end up as one of the better AFL Umpires in time , has worked very hard , and good luck to her.

Is she a Port or Crow supporter?

At least he'd try to lead by example, he might get tagged out of games but he'll still be putting his body on the line and be at the bottom of every contest. Tex just disappears and is largely ineffective, and tends to embarrass himself on and off the field rather than be a leader.

The "old school country bumpkin becomes an AFL captain" gimmick was amusing for a while, but it's run its course and I wouldn't be surprised if Sloane is wheeled out as captain next season.
He's the same age as Taylor Walker, there's no way they'd transfer the captaincy over as it would be an admission that Taylor failed. 5 years ago I would totally get it but it would be an odd decision now. Has there been an older first year captain in the last 10 years Ron The Bear ?

west perth had it's supporter base eroded, firstly by the shift from WAFL to the AFL. Adding to that, it was squished between Perth and subiaco meaning it's area of influence was small to start with. Then the mining companies moved in west perth pushing rental prices above $600 per square metre, well above what a resident could pay.

who knows why they haven't been able to connect with the residents in Joondalup. Perhaps not adopting the name Joondalup was a mistake, perhaps Joondalup is full of poms and other nationalities, perhaps the WAFL just isn't relevant etc etc

My gut feel is they moved there, to position themselves as the next WA AFL franchise but it clearly hasn't worked.

Fortunately for ordinary people, property prices in Perth continue to become more affordable each year. I'd suggest I've lost $500k on my house and I paid $500k less than the owner before me. That's a 35% fall in 8 years.
West Perth's problems started when they got that 200k per year channel 9 sponsorship. As Channel 7 was starting the Wafl telecasts and refused to televise any WP game on TV.On top of that the Wafc when handing out the Wafl club dividend took the 200 k of WP in 2014-15..
Like you say there supporter base has just eroded..WP where called the Garlic Munchers.. 2/3 of there supporters where Italian born .People that came to Au in the 1950's+60's.WP and Variants cars.

Not sure where to put this, should/could we start an assistant coaches thread - as in possible changes word on the street etc... just noticed on the main board the Saints have swept the broom with gusto.

Roughead was 30 when given the captaincy in 2017

You watch the blues get the priority pick this season.
We all know it's going to happen.

When it does happen Gillon better be ready to sign his resignation papers.

What's especially grating about this is how the rest of the competition has to keep paying for their mistakes.

No-one forced them to sack Ratten and hire Malthouse, who then chose to pay a relatively crocked Dale Thomas $700,000pa instead of prime Eddie Betts. Or to get rid of Mitch Robinson, who would crawl over broken glass to win a footy. Or to punt Shaun Grigg, who while no worldbeater, has had a slightly better career trajectory than Andrew Collins. Or to draft Troy Menzel ahead of Brodie Grundy.

And so on.

For all the shit I heap on Brisbane for burning their series of winning lottery tickets, at least they're justified in seeking assistance given how terrible the situation is up in Queensland financially and in terms of destination/retention factors.

Carlton are just a latent powerhouse who keep shooting themselves in the dick.

It annoys me, Malthouse left them in worse shape (if that is even possible) but he is spoken about in hushed reverence by the moronic old boys club. No questions about the damage and the cost. But they will crucify other clubs for any perceived mismanagement of water bottles or strapping tape.

Been a few. Scott Burns (33 in 2008) the oldest. Robert Murphy, James McDonald, Luke Power, Simon Goodwin, Brent Harvey, Brendon Goddard, David Mundy, Jarryd Roughead, Brad Green were all 30-32. Then Adam Goodes and Cameron Ling at 29 and a bit. Sloane would be a tick over 29.

The cognitive dissonance in regards to Carlton is amazing.

Remember when Carlton sacked Brett Ratten as coach Port were the ratbag organisation for not hiring him. If he was such a great coach why didn't Carlton cop it for sacking him? Ratten had a considerably better win/loss ratio than Malthouse at Carlton.

Carlton have struggled since check book drafting and brown paper bags passed on with Pigs arse Elliott and Richard Pratt.
Carlton have most probably bought more premierships than any other VFL club over time.
In the good old days they could pay peanuts for a ready made AFL star like they did with Bradley from Ports.
The end of those days was the end of Carlton.

And fancy having three consecutive #1 picks yet for whatever reason, none of them graduated to stardom, let alone that elite handful of players in the comp.

IMG_9568.JPG

• Andrew Walker pinnacle: 2004 Rising Star nominee

• Bryce Gibbs pinnacle: 2014 Best & Fairest

• Matthew Kreuzer pinnacle: 2008 Rising Star nominee

Edit: whoops, Walker was 'only' a pick #2 (who was given the #1, no pressure!).

• Marc Murphy pinnacle: 1 x AFLCA POTY(!)

That was just that sanctimonious bag of wind, Patrick Smith who is to be frank utterly clueless about football (or anything in Australian sport) yet continues to be paid to lay down judgement upon it.

Malthouse was an awesome coach. And I firmly believe would have continued to be great if it weren't for the interim sabbatical in the media. Seriously, stay the **** away from any successful coach (or player) who has leapt into the media and lapped up the residue of circlejerk in their bathwater - it extricates any sense of reality of the genuine problems coaches face and replaces it with arms length righteous bullshit. Just look at the outcomes of the gurus Malthouse, Eade & Roos in their reincarnations. I have great respect for what all these guys achieved in their legacy building days, but as soon as they experience the freedom and righteousness of being "outside the tent" and the widespread adulation of their insights - they just simply cannot successfully go back to being the guy metaphorically knee deep in shit when they see the enviable repute they have when on the other side of the fence for zero meaningful scrutiny. Once you jump back in it after viewing the prism of footy from that perspective, your actions and behaviour are different. Worsfold stayed right out of it in between his gigs and has done a genuinely (and sustainably) good job for Essendon since taking on an immensely challenging role. He's done it by doing it is way independent of what any other group thinks out there.

I'm all for holistic big picture thinking, but in clubs and any organisation you need strategically placed rabid dogs who think of nothing but the betterment of their own circumstances not caring one **** about what others think (in footy it's usually best if this is the senior coach so long as there is balance around them). Once you're in the media as a pundit you lose that IMO.

Not much different to Jonas last year in Ballarat really.

Papley's cheap shot from behind on Goddard was worse than that (and Kane's week for the Sam Mitchell incident), what with play dead as the ball was travelling to the centre after his goal.

Didn't so much as attract a fine. Free kick only.
