So what happens when Butcher fails again next year?
Do we trade him and go for someone like Patton with a 1st rounder or Lewis Johnston with a 3rd rounder or draft another kid in apparently a tall draft?
or keep him and hope in 2015 he pulls his finger out in his 6th season

When Butcher fails? Way to back in our players. Butcher is going to make you eat your words in 2014. Fair enough if he is actually playing and spudding it up next year, but I'd rather we support the guys on our list until they prove they can't cut it, ala Danielle Stewart.

Personally I think their recruiting strategy seems a bit aimless but wanted others opinions as we'll have such contrasting styles over the next few years and wanted to get thoughts on how those games will go.

I am not going to talk about the shit club over the road but our draft was far from aimless. In the last few years we have had zero skill or class. This year the games we won were by fitness and grunt... but the top teams get on top and can blow us away in 15 mins which we don't have the players to do that to them when we are up. This year we had what I would have classified as 3 outside mids: Colquhoun Wingard and Cornes. For some reason people thought after we added polec and White that number was magically fixed. We now have a very good list balance heading into next year. still missing a 25 year old CHF, tall reserve defender and growing ruckman in my view. I asked for classy players pre draft and we got 3.
The one I see as a wierd selection is the Harvey one because we effectively have Butcher and Shaw in the same profile. I also made mention earlier in another thread for anyone doing best 22's I would expect Young and Moore will be left out for team balance given we have options on the outside instead of forcing Hartlett etc. to do it.

Whoever they were just interviewing on 5aa just said that Bassett suggested someone to the Essendon recruiting staff by saying "He's better than Troy Chaplin" and the response was "You'd hope everyone is."

<3 Richmond.

Giles at 26?

After Sandoh said he's looking forward to the Crouch brothers playing at the AFC for the next 10/12/15 years, I hope they delist Matt after his initial 2 year contract expires :D

Agree with all of that. Hope you understood I was talking about the crow's recruiting appearing aimless there.

Good point on the grunt we were relying on recently. To Primus' credit, he did turn that around. The lead-up to Primus and his first year was the worst I've seen of Port due to that horrid softness and he had to go all out to change it. Unfortunately, that style and patch of recruiting left us with no other strong suits so agree adding skilled players and training the squad hard on skills now is key. How do you rate Impey and Byrne-Jones' kicking by the way? Seen it written up as good to very good but not elite.

Anyway, the more I look at our draft, the more I like it. Looking through our list, we had a solitary small defender in Logan and although the position isn't glamourous, and I still kinda resent using our first pick to fill it, it did indeed need filling especially with guys with pace. Having said that, I really like Byrne-Jones. He seems more than just your average small defender so would've been ok with using our #21 on him.

I too am looking forward to seeing a dedicated inside mid Hartlett next year. Let's hope it happens.

From where our club came from in the last two years, to where we are now, these drafted players would be stoked coming to a club such as ours.

Players like Chad and Ollie drfated in those bad years would have been feeling a little apprehensive about playing with the position our club was in.

These new draftee's wouldn't have that apprehensive feeling but more excited to come to our club. This is not to say that Chad and Ollie weren't, but with the state that our club is at the moment and with the year we had, everything about our club to outsiders are starting become more inviting to play with us.

With this state of mind, will these draftee's exceed expectations even more than previous selections?

If so, then Chad and Ollie have done themselves proud!!

That is a long drought for Essendon, and with the draft sanctions they are under, that is likely to continue. A lot of talk is made about how Richmond have not been up for a while, but Essendon have been out of the top four for 12 years now and likely much longer.

The similar thread to this on the cows board has become sookfest 2013, they are really a bunch of girls.

They don't like that Ford Cortina mod much. Wonder if he's any relation to Foot Falcon ... hey wait ...

I recall someone using Can'ta Ford Fairlane a while back. Thought that was pretty funny.
