Cheney chucking his mobile in his drink? Not happy about something?

Some reports that up to $1m of Griffens' salary will be paid by the Bulldogs over 4 years. If this is correct, whose salary cap does it come under?

Ok read the Age story about up to $1mil of Griffen's salary. So this is how it might work.

In the 2013 AFL annual report on page 116 it has the $100k salary bands of what players got paid and there are 22 players who got paid $700k or more in 2013. I would expect 1 player from each club to be in this group of 22 which would mean Griffen is in there. They are 2013 figures and the story talks about Griffen being under contract for 2015 with the Bulldogs so we allow for a bit of indexation in his contract. So he could be on $850k-$900k in 2015 with is base payments + match payments + bonuses etc. So the Bulldogs pay Griffen's 2015 contract ie $850k+ is close to $1mil and the journo has poetic licence to stretch that to $1mil and over the 4 year deal, when in fact it will only be for monies owed to Griffen during 1st November 2014 to 31st October 2015 period. But over 4 years sounds better.

From the article it looks like GWS will be paying Boyd's 2015 salary, which could be as high as $200k if he plays all 22 games.

This is pretty logical as both clubs would have done forward planning to make sure they stay within the cap next year - as well as have plans for the next few years cap - and in a few months time would have been doing their final planning for their 2016 cap and who they can squeeze in and offer what amounts for new contracts. So the two clubs paying players no longer on their lists, means they dont have stuff ups with their caps.

That's it but it's a **** up if a bewdy slides to 10
Indeed. You'd think on the balance of probability the best players always go in the low draft digits......but how many standouts are there this year?

But we all know top 10 doesn't guarantee success and later picks don't preclude it.

From their fans perspective, it gives them an out - ie "how many top 10 picks have we had?" Hello.....you just let one go to advance yourselves from 47 to 35. They'd be hoping 14 + 35 > 10 + 47. These things tend to be evaluated with hindsight in a couple of years time in most cases.

Interesting strategy

Lowden will be good depth for them. They desperately needed a 2nd ruck. Surprised they did this so late

Lowden might have been hanging out for a better club to go to in South Australia that was having a problem getting a trade done.

So the BIG NEWS stupid has been batting on about for weeks is the signing of Ryan Okeefe (who was recruited prior to the head coach in the states worst kept secret) and David Teague as assistant coaches to compliment Scott Camporeale, Darren Milburn and Matthew Clarke, while having Mark Bickely leave the coaches box.

they would have desperately wanted not to have to pay a lot for someone who will not play most weeks. there was no way they were going to spend much, given the 'perfect storm' free agency year they have coming up. being light on for ruck depth is just another way they can copy last year's model Port.

Do not understand the crows strategy. I believe I heard Nobel earlier in the week saying that would pick best available with pick 10 and now shuffling down the que they believe they can get the same person at 14 as at 10 isn't that a bit contradicting. Hope Durdin is there at 10

or you could just keep it simple and have a target in mind at 10 that you think will be there at 14 and figure 35 up from 47 is good but still a 'crapshoot'

and Jarman Impey says "Hi". perhaps Walsh reminded Noble of that tactic?

Yeah some good players always drift.

Laurence Angwin says hi too, from pick 7

:)

I wish them more of that calibre of talent assessment.

And to your other point I think by "best available" they probably expect "any outside running mid FFS we're as slow as a snail on prozac".
