I was actually thinking the other day that this is basically what I envisioned/hoped Hartlett to become.

Instead he gave up trying to be a midfielder and just accepted being a flanker.
I wouldn't give up on Hartlett just yet. He had a killer off-season and has been tearing up the training track. Could easily get picked up in the mid-season draft and make a move in to the midfield.

Yeah I might have to actually watch the game. I tipped the giants, i definitely thought they’d win. But it does sound like they had a few things go against them but it was also against side that has finished 18th, 15th and 14th in the last 3 seasons.

Good on Kingsley but I was just surprised by that comment considering the amount good wins he has been involved in as player and coach.

It wasn’t much of a game to watch. The oppressive heat here on Sunday meant no crowd or atmosphere and it wasn’t attractive football.

i can appreciate the fact that for a team tipped to finish bottom 4 it was character building.

It was almost like the Port v Melbourne in 2013. No one tipped Port but they won on the road with a new coach and team. Can’t see GWS going on a run like Port did, but internally GWS would have rated that game.

Umpiring

He's got to be high. Port Lions was the worst umpired game I've seen since 2021 at least.

Privately seething: The Adelaide Crows are reportedly “furious” after Shane McAdam was on Tuesday night slapped with a three-week ban.
The club is reportedly set to announce on Wednesday morning it will appeal the ruling that saw McAdam suspended on a rough conduct charge.

Umpiring

21-4 frees at halftime and umpired well. I can guarantee if we were 21-4 frees up at halftime at Adelaide Oval the AFL would launch an enquiry and we may never get another free kick again.

It was equally as puzzling that apparently we then only breached the rules a further 4 times for the entire second half of football.

All except maybe two or three free kicks against us in the first half were there. We were undisciplined as **** in that first half.

The problem was that two of the two or three free kicks that wasn’t there happened to be when Brisbane was getting a run on. First was the Dixon free against that should have been play on at worst and a free kick for holding the ball at best, then there was a tackle that Wines laid on Ashcroft who lifted his arm to make the tackle slip high. Both of these incidents ended up as goals.

Much of South Adelaide's success has come under talent manager Mark Clayton, a 228-game premiership player with Port Adelaide in the SANFL.

Whoever it was (Hinkley, Jonas?) that spoke to them at half time, the umps must have told them that they need to show more humility - and voila!

I agree. I didn't notice anything wrong with the umpiring until I went to check team stats and saw that we were 3-15 in FK at that time. Dixon's 100m penalty was deserved, and the free kick to the Lions was there. It was a clear tackle without the ball.

It’s from 2021, but it’s pinned:

I’ve already said that free count is BS. However, AFL umpiring is BS. So, the 50/50 expectation has its grounds…

Can't agree with this. Rich had the ball (he was running with it), was tackled, and then handballed it away, which is why you could argue that it shouldn't have been a free kick to Dixon because he got an effective disposal away - though because there was literally no Brisbane player around to receive the handball you could argue that it should have been holding the ball anyway. The umpire called it for being too high when it wasn't - Dixon's tackle was below Rich's shoulder.

That being said - Dixon carrying on about it and managing to lose 100m of field position to give up a goal is exactly what Hinkley and Wines are meaning when they say that the players need to be humble. Humility just means not putting yourself above the team. Yeah, Charlie was frustrated and rightly so, but the way you deal with it is by channeling that aggression into making sure you perform better.

I have no idea what Dixon’s second 50 was for, but for it to be a 50m penalty for saying “are you serious” to the umpire like the first one is incredibly soft. Especially when the initial free kick was dubious at best, wrong at worst.
