I really thought that some of the footy we played during that 13 game run was premiership type winning. Just solid, brutal and brilliant. I got sucked in a bit to believing it was different this year with no idea who was responsible for it.
We really fell off the perch with the games against Carlton and Adelaide. Those efforts came from nowhere.

Only difference between this year and last is luck.

Ruck stocks are worse, Boak and Jonas are becoming animated corpse tier players. Dixon and McKenzie are in a steady decline. Wines, DBJ are just average park footballers.

Rioli & JHF as recruits have been gains. Lord and Evans shown glimpses.

SPP, Rozee, Butters and Aliir are probably the only ones who are consistent in their roles week to week.
Which year us supposed to be the lucky one?

Wines - disagree, I’m seeing gradual improvement. Convinced he has more in him with clean health.

Ruck - agree it’s been hard. Shane Dante hasn’t been played earlier.

Jonas - enough said.

Boak - still has glimpses. Role player - super sub?

DBJ - agree.

Dixon, McKenzie. Agree decline - but they still make us better.

Your good list is too short. Drew, Farrell, Bergman - consistent most of the year.

Plus two biggies - Finlayson, Houston, both in AA contention.

The only unwatchable game for me was the showdown.

Carlton game was completely predictable given changes and the Blues were so clean that night. I was at the game and everything they touched turned to gold.

Magpies and Cats games we played well, just couldn’t get it done.

Keep the faith.

We need to be careful with the brave/proud loss sentiments. Last time many did that was after the Collingwood game and then we were comprehensively smacked in the showdown.

Now is definitely not the time to drink our bathwater.

I was disappointed, angry in fact and thought even with our outs we should’ve won. Clearly had the game on our terms early in the last quarter and bottled it.

4 losses in a row after winning 13 in a row is nothing to be proud of, it’s quite embarrassing in fact.

Be better and fast.

Not really a believer in “brave losses” but got the feeling watching the game that maybe the illness that took out Bergman and Finlayson may have affected others.
As well as we played in patches there were a few players that just looked flat.
In particular Houston seemed off the pace a bit and Marshall even before trying not knock himself out didn’t look well.
Still believe with some semblance forward structure we would have won the game.
As I mentioned in the game day thread Marshall is often too unselfish (or frightened to take responsibility).
His teammates need to encourage him to take his shots, he has a good set shot, unless someone is in a clearly better position he needs to take the kick.

It was definitely an improved performance for jonas after his howler against Carlton

Specialist forwards who pass the ball when in range infuriate me. It’s their bloody job to take responsibility and kick the goal.

In other games I’ve seen the same players such as Marshall go back and kick goals from similar positions even when team mates offer up leads.
It’s not a coaching directive it’s players passing the buck.
Absolutely infuriating. And it used to be a habit of ours not too long ago. If this creeps back in we are so cooked.

Really? No Aliir and we’re always in trouble, add no Dixon and the odds for a loss increase but Lycett, Findlayson, Bergman Jones and Farrell as well I thought we’d get killed. The way the midfield played gave me hope for the future. Loved Dante’s game, thought Burton came back into form and Duursma slowly getting there. Avoid further injuries and Burton continues as he was against Geelong and I reckon we win the next three.

I've avoided saying it until now but I actually thought after a shaky start that Jonas was pretty good.

We struggle against hard, contested, no holds barred footy.

Adelaide had won that game before the ball was even bounced.

Gee pretty harsh, even the best players were unable to stop Messi Miers in his day

He is one of my favourite players when he is on fire because I love a good wingman but he looks like a very old 22 year old at the moment. Even his facial expressions and the body language of his gait is not the best.

We have a lot of guys injured and he seems to be another one. We may have already played our finals and the bodies of many players are either enough to have them out injured or playing injured. I mean the injury to McKenzie was just a matter of time, wasn't it? If Marshall did something similar, it wouldn't surprise me. Same with Duursma and a few others.

Up until a couple weeks before the bye, I was a tad concerned about our wingmen and high half forwards. That has not abated.

Smart for Hinkley - who fed him that. Kudos for pointing it out though.

He was also asked if he thought Geelong had the rub of the green in the last quarter. He told the journo you know we can't comment on rub of the green. You watched it, you report what you saw.

Same here. Grew in confidence as the game wore on.

Having watched most of it on replay now, I’m disappointed in the final result and missed opportunity, but not shattered or surprised.

There were some really good signs: 1. The three superstar amigos in the middle under a very smart rookie ruckman who is learning his craft at AFL level quickly.
2. The outstanding form and combination work of Rioli and SPP.
3. The fact that our backline which was decimated by injury/sickness (McKenzie, Aliir, Jones, Bergman, Farrell) and had its best remaining player way down on form (Houston) held up reasonably well.

We need and have needed more from Duursma (although he did some good things) and Wines. McEntee just doesn’t do enough. Marshall threatened to really stand up in the second half and then didn’t take ultimate responsibility when we needed him to.

Someone needs to warn Esava, you won't get away with those push in the backs and arm chops if you come to Port. Probably best to stay at a club that you can get away with it at.
I am not convinced Esava is what we need, his best footy is when he is the spare and we already have a very good player for that.
Man on man Sav is not that impresive, if we trade him him it should not be for overs.

I thought boak had a somewhat good game. Enough to stay in the team. I liked his sort of half foward/wing/backup mid role. I disagree with people saying he should not get another contract I think he is still good enough for another year, maybe 2 if he is lucky.
